00:00 How are you? Oh my god, I love a menswear look. This is so great. And the jewelry?
00:05 Yeah, it's my great-grandmother's.
00:06 Really?
00:07 Yes, yeah, it's my great-grandma. No, these are my mother's. These are Alexa Patel. And yeah. Yeah.
00:15 Do you just only bring them out for special occasions?
00:18 I try. I mean, I wish I could be this functional with all these rings in my regular life, but you know,
00:24 if I get so lucky to wear some of my mom's jewelry, I will definitely do that.
00:29 It's also special and also on a day like today where you're nominated.
00:32 Yes, I know. I'm very excited about it.
00:35 How are you processing this?
00:36 Well, so far, I think. Little by little, day by day. No, but I'm just so excited to be here.
00:42 This is such a great honor. You love when anybody really connects to your show. So to get
00:46 a recognition like this for something that you also love feels really special. And I'm just,
00:52 I'm too excited. I'm over the moon right now, really.
00:54 Has this recognition and the way that this show has received led to anything new for you?
01:00 Absolutely. I mean, personally, on a different level, just like being able to tell a story from
01:05 this perspective of a young black girl who sees the world a little bit differently, like I think
01:10 has given me so much confidence in the way that I move about the space. And you just feel seen.
01:15 And to feel that scene makes you go into an audition or do another project, knowing that,
01:20 like I was seen and I was good and I got to experience this. And yeah, so I feel.
01:24 Do you know that when you read it or is there somebody you go to for advice of
01:29 like a second read or besides your team and your agents? But like, who do you go to?
01:34 Well, funnily enough, on this audition, typically my mom helps me with my self tapes,
01:38 but I was surprising her for her birthday. So my older brother had a read with me.
01:43 And so we kind of got to read this together and he helped me and get the part clearly.
01:48 Yeah. So I just I trust my family. I like I trust their opinions. But there is something so
01:53 unlike anything I'd ever read about this project. I mean, how many times you read
01:57 about a 13 foot giant? So I think you really it sticks out and it stays with you.
02:01 Some of those visuals are implanted in my brain.
02:06 Mine, too. I mean, imagine like on the day, like the VFX and everything when we superimpose Big
02:12 Jor-El with me on top of it. I was like, this is this is different. I love this. It's beautiful.
02:16 Yes. Yes.
02:22 Yeah, it's such a good job on that. And then I'm just curious,
02:30 independent spirit about championing the work of other artists,
02:34 shining a light. What's a performance or a movie or show that you love this past year?
02:39 Oh, this past year. Oh, there's too many. I mean, oh, man. I mean, obviously, Danielle Brooks. Love
02:45 her. I like Divine Joy. Love her. American fiction. I know I spoke to her. She's like
02:51 American fiction, just like so, so specific in the storytelling and so universal at the same time.
02:57 And it's just so many beautiful performances that there are too many to name. But I loved I loved
03:02 everything that I saw. Last silly, dumb question you don't want to answer. We don't have to. But
03:07 I just was thinking since your brother helped you, when would we ever see a sibling or mother,
03:13 father, daughter project? Maybe you've seen it and you didn't know. I don't know. I don't know.
03:18 No, I don't know. I love them. So anything we do anything together. Yeah. Serve it today.
