00:00 So a certain martial arts creator on TikTok put out some erroneous information, so I'm
00:05 going to correct the information that they gave without exposing who it was.
00:09 These are concerning the titles of Honshi, Kyoshi, and Renshi.
00:13 Now they're saying that the second character in that Honshi, Kyoshi, and Renshi means "person"
00:18 and they're kind of correct on that, but it doesn't actually mean "person."
00:21 It actually means "magnificent man" and in general refers to samurai, aka warriors, such
00:27 as Bushi.
00:28 So a Bushi would be a martial magnificent person, or in total context, a warrior.
00:34 So a Bushi is a warrior and the same Shi is used in Honshi, Kyoshi, and Renshi.
00:40 So a Renshi is a polished warrior, a Kyoshi is a warrior instructor, and a Honshi is the
00:45 model warrior.
00:46 Or you could say samurai if you want, but that would kind of be an incorrect term unless
00:49 you're actually a samurai, so use the term warrior instead when translating.
00:54 Then the person also went around to say that Shihan and Honshi were the exact same word,
00:58 it's just inverted from one another.
01:00 This is not correct.
01:01 You're not taking the Honshi kanji and putting one on the other side of the other.
01:05 The kanji for Shi is different between the two, whereas the kanji for Han is the same
01:11 between the two.
01:12 So whereas a Honshi is the model warrior, a Shihan is the teaching model.
01:16 The Shi in Shihan means "teacher," unlike the Shi in Honshi which means "warrior" as
01:21 we discussed previously.
