00:59 Look out! The electric eye in the doorway!
01:02 [Music]
01:08 It was a trap! If you'd walked through that beam, both of us would have been blown to pieces!

01:54 And the man fell through the doorway and then the place blew up.
01:59 That was a dreadful experience, my dear. This purple monster is utterly inhuman.
02:04 You say it was this supposedly blind man, Tony, who gave you the address of the Pine Street house?
02:10 Yes.
02:11 And right now he's locked up in the city jail.
02:13 Good. What do you intend to do with him?
02:16 Well, if we can make him talk, we might get a clue that'll lead us directly to the purple monster.
02:20 Dr. Layton, you've seen several of the purple monster's men, so the district attorney would like you to come to his office at 2 o'clock this afternoon
02:27 to see if you can identify Tony as one of them.
02:30 Well, I'm very busy, but I suppose I should go.
02:33 That would be the wise thing to do, Uncle Cyrus. I'll call for you here at 1.30.
02:37 All right. I'll be ready. Now, you two run along. Let me get some work done.

04:20 Something will have to be done about Tony immediately. The district attorney will try to make him talk.
04:24 So what? Tony doesn't know where this place is, and the only time he ever laid eyes on you is when we bought the cure off of him.
04:30 That's the point. The district attorney wants me, as Dr. Layton, to try to identify Tony as one of the purple monster's men.
04:37 That's bad. 'Cause Tony will squeal on you to save himself.
04:40 I am due at the district attorney's office at 2 o'clock. Tony must be silenced.
04:44 That's easy to do. But not before 2 o'clock. Can't you delay going down there?
04:50 Not without arousing suspicion. Unless, of course, I am forcibly prevented from being there.
04:56 I have it. Shortly before 2 o'clock, Sheila will be driving me into town along the Crest Highway.
05:04 [music]
05:19 Uncle, I have a feeling that car is following us.
05:22 [music]
05:26 You're just nervous, Sheila. The man probably wants to pass us.
05:30 Perhaps. But after what's happened, I'm not taking any chances.
05:34 [music]
06:03 [music]
06:06 Get out, Layton. You're coming with me.
06:09 [music]
06:11 You stay right where you are.
06:13 I'll have you jailed for this.
06:15 Shut up and get in my car.
06:17 [music]
06:38 [explosion]
06:41 [music]
06:51 I'm glad the girl wasn't hurt. She'll be an eyewitness to the fact that I was carried off.
06:56 You did a very convincing job.
06:58 I should. I've had plenty of practice.
07:02 What about Tony?
07:04 We'll take care of him in jail this afternoon. Fritz Benham.
07:08 One of the kitchen helpers. He'll attend to Tony.
07:12 And where are you taking me?
07:14 Andy Martin's repair shop. He handles stolen cars.
07:18 Fritz will report there as soon as he's finished his little job at the jail.
07:22 No, that won't do. I don't want all those thugs to see me there with you.
07:26 You'll have to tie me up and bring me in as a prisoner.
07:28 That'll protect me in case Foster catches up with any of them.
07:31 Okay. I'll make it look all right.
07:34 [music]
07:40 Hold it.
07:42 Yeah, that's high enough.
07:46 What's this all about, Garrett?
07:52 Why don't you hold this man here for a while? You can cut yourself in on the take.
07:56 Yeah. You mean I'll cut myself in on a stretch in the big house?
08:00 No, you'll be cuttled in the chili pepper. I don't want any part of your business.
08:03 Oh, calm down, Andy. Fritz Benham will be here with a message in a little while.
08:07 Then we can take this guy to a new hideout.
08:10 Go there and sit down and keep your trap shut.
08:13 Thanks, Inspector. Keep me posted.
08:16 Craig. Garrett's got Uncle Cyrus.
08:19 He forced us off the road and took Uncle away in another car.
08:22 Take it easy, Sheila. I think I know how to find your uncle.
08:25 Inspector Evans just phoned me that our prisoner Tony died suddenly after eating his lunch.
08:29 - Is that a hint? - Probably, but there's no definite proof yet.
08:33 Dr. Layton was undoubtedly carried off to prevent him from reaching the district attorney's office
08:37 before Tony could be put out of the way.
08:39 But how will this help to find Uncle Cyrus?
08:42 The police suspect Fritz Benham, a kitchen helper, of tampering with Tony's food.
08:45 But he doesn't know he's suspected, and I'm going to follow him when he leaves the jail.
08:49 He may lead me straight to the man who took your uncle.
08:52 [music]
08:56 That's your man, Foster.
08:59 Thanks. I'll take over from here.

10:22 Hey, don't pull that fainting stuff on me.
10:25 Hey, you better keep that window closed. Somebody might see us in here.
10:30 Drop that gun. I got you covered.
