00:00 "Who could make this up?"
00:02 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most infamous times
00:06 people vanished without a trace, only to be located eventually, sometimes decades later.
00:12 "Because every missing child deserves to be found."
00:16 Number 30. Paul Franczak
00:19 In 1964, Dora Franczak handed over her newborn son Paul Franczak to a nurse at the Michael
00:25 Rees Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Unfortunately, this nurse was an imposter who disappeared with
00:30 the baby. "It was very traumatic for them. I mean, I can't even imagine what they went through."
00:35 A massive investigation was launched, and about one year later, authorities discovered an abandoned
00:40 toddler whom the Franczaks believed was their missing son. In 2012, a suspicious Franczak
00:47 decided to take a DNA test and found that he wasn't related to the people he called his parents.
00:52 In fact, his true identity was Jack Rosenthal, a twin who had disappeared in 1965. It was later
00:59 discovered that the real Paul Franczak was a man named Kevin Ray Beatty, although his identity
01:04 wasn't publicly revealed until after his demise in 2020. "But is there a family resemblance?"
01:09 "Definitely. Definitely a resemblance."
01:13 Number 29. Tonya Ryder
01:15 In 2007, Tom Ryder was distraught at his home in Maple Valley, Washington.
01:20 His wife Tonya had disappeared for about a week after completing her shift at a nearby supermarket.
01:26 "Well, as far as I knew, Tonya was just going about her normal day. I mean,
01:29 she would have been getting off work at 9 o'clock, having breakfast, and then heading home."
01:34 "Little does Tom know, Tonya never makes it home that day."
01:40 When Tom called the police, they offered little help as Tonya was captured on CCTV
01:45 leaving the store. Eventually, they tracked her cell phone, which led them down her usual route
01:50 home. "The detectives were able to look at the records and determine which tower was accessed.
01:55 They were able to narrow that down into essentially a pie-shaped area,
02:00 three to five miles out in a particular direction."
02:03 There, they discover Tonya's crashed car, overturned in a ravine and hidden by vegetation.
02:08 She had somehow survived eight days without food or water, enduring severe injuries including a
02:14 broken collarbone, as well as fractured ribs and vertebra. Her left leg was also crushed
02:20 and was very nearly amputated. Remarkably, Tonya has no recollection of what caused the crash.
02:26 Lucy Ann Johnson
02:28 In 1961, Lucy Ann Johnson disappeared from her home in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
02:35 Bizarrely, it wasn't until 1965 that her husband Marvin reported her missing.
02:40 This made him a prime suspect in her disappearance, but no evidence of wrongdoing was found.
02:46 In 2013, Johnson's daughter Linda initiated her own investigation, which led her to a small
02:52 territory called the Yukon where her mother previously lived. With aid from the local media,
02:57 Linda met a woman named Rhonda, who claimed that Johnson was also her mother. Turns out,
03:02 Johnson had left Marvin due to domestic violence, but he prevented her from taking her two children
03:07 along. She then relocated back to the Yukon, where she remarried and had four other kids.
03:12 Jamie Closs
03:15 In 2018, Jake Patterson invaded the Closs home in Barron, Wisconsin, armed with a shotgun. He
03:22 fatally shot James and Denise Closs before abducting their daughter Jamie and taking her
03:26 to his cabin in Gordon, Wisconsin. Patterson had become fixated on Closs after seeing her get off
03:32 a school bus. Eighty-eight days later, Patterson put Closs under his bed before leaving home,
03:37 assuming that she was too scared to escape. She seized the opportunity and fled,
03:42 subsequently encountering a woman who recognized her from the news.
03:45 Obviously, Jamie is under this tremendous fear and is using that fear in the beginning
03:51 to keep her captive.
03:52 I think for her, she just kept it together every day. She didn't know when she was going to get
03:59 out or if she ever was going to. It must have taken everything inside her to just take that
04:07 moment and run.
04:08 It didn't take long for the cops to locate Patterson and extract a confession from him.
04:13 He was sentenced to two life sentences without parole for the murders, plus 40 years for the
04:18 kidnapping.
04:18 26. Brian Anthony McCain II, aka Busy Bone
04:24 Today, Brian Anthony McCain II, also known as Busy Bone, is a Grammy-winning musician
04:29 best known as a member of the rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. However, his life took a
04:33 dramatic turn in 1981 when he and his sisters were taken by their mother's boyfriend. Deceived
04:39 into believing that their mother and grandmother had died, the siblings were transported all over
04:44 northern Oklahoma. Eventually, they settled on a reservation in Kaw, Oklahoma. In 1983,
04:50 the TV film "Adam" was broadcast, which featured photos of missing children before the end
04:55 credits. One of these was McCain. His babysitter recognized the picture and promptly contacted
05:00 the authorities. This led to McCain and his sisters being reunited with their mother.
05:05 I went through a lot of things as a kid, and I think that, you know, it helped me become
05:10 who I am.
05:10 25. Natasha Kampusch
05:13 On March 2, 1998, Natasha Kampusch left her home in Vienna, Austria for school and disappeared
05:19 without a trace. Police launched a massive investigation searching many vehicles,
05:24 but they couldn't find her. Kampusch had been abducted by communications technician
05:28 Wolfgang Pricklepil, who confined her to a cellar in his home.
05:32 I didn't know what was going to happen. In that moment, I thought it was the end.
05:38 She remained under captivity for eight years, during which she was assaulted by Pricklepil,
05:43 both physically and sexually. In 2006, while cleaning Pricklepil's van, she ran outside and
05:50 alerted neighbors, who called the police.
05:52 It was an enormous feeling of joy that cannot be compared to anything else.
05:55 You see all the possibilities laid out in front of you.
05:59 That night, Pricklepil decided to end his own life rather than face justice.
06:04 Kampusch later released books on her experience and was briefly a talk show host.
06:08 Her story was immortalized in the 2013 film, 3096 Days.
06:13 24. NATASHA RYAN
06:16 In 1998, Natasha Ryan was reported missing from her hometown of Rockhampton, Queensland,
06:21 in Australia. The subsequent investigation eventually led the police to serial killer
06:26 Leonard Fraser, who seemingly confessed to her murder. However, during Fraser's trial in 2003,
06:32 police received an anonymous tip claiming that Ryan was in fact alive and hiding in the house
06:36 of her boyfriend, Scott Black. The police raided Black's house in North Rockhampton
06:53 and found her there. She had willingly left home to live with him secretly, hiding in a
06:58 cupboard when guests came over. Scott was sentenced to three years in jail for perjury,
07:03 two of which were suspended, while Ryan was fined $1,000 for the false investigation.
07:08 In 2008, the two got married.
07:16 23. SEAN HORNBECK AND BEN OWNBY
07:20 In 2002, Sean Hornbeck disappeared while riding his bicycle to a friend's house in Richwoods,
07:25 Missouri. The police initially faced challenges in their investigation,
07:29 and the case ultimately went cold. In 2007, officers were at an apartment complex in Kirkwood,
07:35 Missouri when they spotted a suspicious truck. A few days earlier, a similar vehicle had been
07:40 involved in the kidnapping of teenager Ben Ownby. The cops traced the truck to Michael Devlin,
07:45 and they raided his apartment. Inside, they not only found Ownby, but also Hornbeck,
07:51 who had been presented as Devlin's son for several years. Devlin later pleaded guilty
07:56 to a host of charges and was sentenced to a staggering total of 4,240 years in prison.
08:02 22. CARLINA WHITE
08:08 In 1987, Carlina White, then an infant, was taken by her parents to New York City's Harlem
08:14 Hospital Center. There, a woman named Ann Petway posed as a nurse and abducted her.
08:19 White was subsequently brought up as Nedra Nance in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 2005,
08:24 after discovering her birth certificate was fake, White confronted Petway about her true identity
08:29 and was told she had been abandoned as a baby. This explanation didn't satisfy her. White initiated
08:35 her own investigation and found a baby picture of herself on a missing children's website.
08:40 "Carlina called the center's hotline and said, 'I don't know who I am.'"
08:43 She contacted the authorities, and DNA analysis confirmed her real identity. In 2012,
08:49 Petway entered a plea deal and received a 12-year prison sentence. She was ultimately released in
08:55 2021. "She needed help for her to take someone's child and make that person suffer like that."
09:02 21. ELIZABETH FRITZEL
09:04 In 2008, Josef Fritzel took his seriously ill daughter Kirsten to a hospital in Amstetten,
09:10 Austria. However, his odd behavior and strange explanation on her mother's whereabouts raised
09:15 concerns among the staff, prompting them to alert the police. "Only when they threaten
09:21 to take away her children that Elizabeth reveals for the first time what Josef Fritzel has been
09:29 doing to her and the police arrest Josef Fritzel and the game is in effect up."
09:36 Fritzel eventually brought Kirsten's mother Elizabeth to the hospital,
09:39 only to be arrested by the police. Elizabeth was actually Fritzel's daughter, whom he claimed had
09:44 run away to join a cult back in 1984. In reality, for 24 years, he secretly confined her to the
09:51 basement of the family house and forced her to bear seven children for him. After Elizabeth's
09:56 video testimony was played at his trial, in 2009, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
10:02 20. ROBERT MCDONOUGH
10:11 If you saw this in a movie, you'd think, "Nah, there's no way." In May of 2013,
10:22 an elderly man named Robert McDonough went missing from his Leamington, Maine, home.
10:27 The danger was compounded by the fact that McDonough has dementia. The authorities were
10:32 called and searched the nearby woods throughout the night but found nothing. The next morning,
10:36 a local news crew stationed themselves outside McDonough's house to report on his disappearance.
10:41 And that is when McDonough quite literally strolled into the shot and asked the news crew
10:45 what was happening. McDonough was safe and healthy, and it was reported that he had wandered out of
10:50 his house and likely into the neighboring forest. The rescue team may have just missed him during
11:01 their search. 19. TIMOTHY CARNEY
11:04 A young New Jersey man named Timothy Carney went missing in September of 2004 after calling his
11:09 employer and telling him that he would be late for work. That night, Carney's empty vehicle was
11:14 discovered near Newark. His parents searched years for their son, and he was finally found
11:19 safe on September 23, 2011, nearly seven full years from the day he disappeared. Unfortunately,
11:27 not much information was given regarding his situation. Carney's parents believe that he
11:31 was influenced by a religious organization known as the Gospel Outreach to abandon all
11:36 contact with his family. 18. CARLOS DE SALAZAR
11:46 A Spanish doctor by the name of Carlos Sánchez Ortiz de Salazar disappeared from the city of
11:52 Seville in 1996. The story goes that de Salazar was severely depressed and fled his home country
11:58 to begin a new life elsewhere. There was no further news, and de Salazar was even declared
12:03 legally dead in 2010. Five years after that, mushroom pickers found de Salazar living in
12:08 the woods of Tuscany, Italy. De Salazar told them who he was and proved it by showing them
12:24 some documents. Photos of these documents were later shared with a missing persons organization.
12:29 Unfortunately, this story has a frustratingly ambiguous ending. After being found, de Salazar
12:35 had taken down his makeshift home and once again fled into the wilderness to be on his own.
12:41 17. PETRA PASCITCA Back in 1984, Petra Pascitca was due to
12:46 arrive at her brother's birthday party, but she never made it. A suspected criminal then
12:51 confessed to killing Pascitca. The case was closed in 1989, with many believing that Pascitca had
12:57 been killed. There was no further news until 2015, when police were called to a home burglary in
13:03 Dusseldorf. The victim said her name was Mrs. Schneider, but eventually came clean. She was
13:08 actually the presumed dead Petra Pascitca. She had been living under a false identity for over 30
13:15 years. When found, Pascitca refused to give a reason for her disappearance and explicitly
13:20 asked not to be reunited with her family. However, she also claimed that family troubles were not the
13:26 reason for her sudden departure. 16. HAROLD WAYNE LOVELL
13:31 This is another person who was presumably killed. But this wasn't at the hands of some random
13:36 criminal. It was at the hands of John Wayne Gacy. Many believed that Harold Wayne Lovell was killed
13:46 by Gacy back in the late 70s, but his body was never identified. In the early 2010s, police were
13:52 attempting to identify some unknown Gacy victims when they started looking into Lovell. Their
14:06 search took them across the country to South Florida, which is where they made a shocking
14:10 discovery. Lovell was alive and well, and he didn't even know that he was presumed dead,
14:15 let alone a victim of Gacy's, whom he had actually met and worked for before his disappearance.
14:21 According to Lovell, he had fled Chicago following some family troubles and stayed out of contact for
14:26 the following 30-odd years. 15. JULIAN HERNANDEZ
14:31 In this case, a simple college application uncovered a 13-year-long ruse. In August of 2002,
14:38 young Julian Hernandez was taken by his father Bobby. Bobby had left behind a note for Julian's
14:43 mother, saying only that he had taken their son. No other details were given, and father and son
14:48 seemingly disappeared into thin air. They had actually gone to Cleveland and developed new
14:53 identities, with Bobby obtaining a Social Security guard under the name Jonathan Mangina.
15:12 The ruse finally ended when Julian applied for college in 2015. A school counselor discovered
15:18 that Julian was legally missing and notified authorities. 19-year-old Julian, who has forgiven
15:23 his father, was then reunited with his mother, and Bobby was sentenced to four years in prison.
15:29 14. DENISE BOLSER It's amazing how much trouble money can cause.
15:40 Back in 1985, 24-year-old Denise Bolser went missing while working as a bookkeeper.
15:46 The only clue was a note left to her husband which read, quote, "We have your wife." While
15:52 the police received many tips over the years, Bolser was eventually tracked by a private
15:56 investigator and found in 2002. She was living in Florida under the name Denise James. According to
16:08 Bolser, she had fled to hide from her old boss. Bolser had skimmed more than $10,000 from the
16:14 company of her boss's wife, allegedly on the orders of her employer. When Bolser began discussing the
16:20 ruse, her co-conspirator reportedly threatened to kill her. She fled to live a new life and has
16:26 since been reunited with her parents. 13. STEVE CARTER
16:38 Imagine this. You're browsing online when you come across your own picture on a website of
16:43 missing children. That's exactly what happened to Steve Carter. After reading about a kidnapping,
16:56 Carter found himself on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's page,
17:00 after which he saw an age-progression photo of a missing child. He thought that the grown man's
17:04 face bore a startling resemblance to his own, so he contacted the police and they got to work.
17:09 Turns out that Steve Carter was actually Marks Barnes, and he had gone missing over 30 years
17:22 earlier after going for a walk with his mother. It's believed that Carter's mother took him to
17:27 an orphanage and put him up for adoption under a false name. She then disappeared herself,
17:32 leaving behind many frustrating questions. 12. JAN BROBERG
17:37 Today, Jan Broberg felt is a professional actress, having found success on stage and
17:42 fame on the WB's Everwood, in which she portrayed Nurse Louise. Unfortunately,
17:48 Broberg suffered a harrowing childhood that involved multiple kidnappings. Back in 1972,
17:54 Broberg's parents met the Birchtold family through church. Broberg quickly developed a
17:58 father-daughter relationship with Robert Birchtold. Unfortunately, Birchtold kidnapped
18:12 Broberg and took her to his trailer home in Mexico. She was eventually rescued, but then
18:24 kidnapped again two years later, and the now teen proceeded to live with Birchtold in California for
18:30 four months. She was eventually rescued by the FBI, and her story was later turned into the
18:35 Netflix documentary, Abducted in Plain Sight. 11. BRENDA HEIST
18:41 On the morning of February 8, 2002, Brenda Heist dropped her children off at school and
18:46 disappeared without a trace. The family was understandably devastated, and Heist's husband
18:59 petitioned to have her declared legally dead. The case was solved in 2013 to mixed results.
19:05 Heist intentionally left her family in Pennsylvania behind to live as a homeless person in Florida.
19:11 She had hitchhiked there with a group of people without homes and spent the next decade working
19:16 odd jobs in the state. According to Heist, she had abandoned her family for stress-related reasons,
19:21 but this story does not have a happy ending. Heist's husband claimed that he had no desire
19:26 to see her, and her now-grown daughter doesn't think her mother "deserves" to see her.
19:31 10. MICHELLE WHITAKER South Carolina woman Michelle Whitaker
19:40 went missing in August of 2002 after a friend gave her a lift to a truck stop.
19:44 Her case later turned into a homicide investigation, and police suspected a man
19:58 named Jonathan Vick. Vick was the boyfriend of Whitaker's co-worker, and she had also gone
20:03 missing. However, police were unable to prove that Vick killed Whitaker. The case went cold until 2008.
20:10 An Oregon woman was watching a Forensic Files episode about Vick when a picture of Whitaker
20:15 flashed on screen. The woman recognized Whitaker as her neighbor and contacted the authorities.
20:20 Her neighbor was indeed the missing Michelle Whitaker, and she later told her family that
20:24 she had fled South Carolina to start a new life in Oregon. 9. GABRIEL NAGY
20:40 When one hears "fugue state," they probably think of that Breaking Bad episode where Walt
20:45 walks around a supermarket in his birthday suit. Well, that was reality for Gabriel Nagy.
20:54 Back in January of 1987, the husband and father disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
21:00 He was reported missing after he failed to return home for lunch, and his burnt-out vehicle was
21:05 later discovered. Nagy remained missing until 2012, when a police officer tracked him down
21:10 and found him alive and well. Nagy had seemingly suffered a dissociative fugue state, a rare
21:17 psychiatric disorder characterized by a loss of memory of one's identity and personality. Put
21:22 simply, Nagy forgot who he was and wandered away to start a new life. 8. LULA HOOD
21:44 There's just something about Florida that apparently attracts people. A woman named Lula
21:48 Hood went missing all the way back in 1970. According to Hood's relatives, she simply
21:53 disappeared from Illinois without a trace. No word was heard until 1996, when Hood's family
22:00 was told that her remains were found in a Florida brickyard. That remained the official story until
22:11 2009, when the remains were tested for DNA. Surprise, they didn't belong to Hood. The case
22:18 was reopened, and investigators eventually tracked Hood to another place in Florida,
22:23 where she'd been living for the last 40 years. According to Hood's daughter, Hood got into a
22:27 squabble with a family member and was told to leave. She did, going all the way to Florida
22:32 and living her life in complete anonymity. 7. AMANDA ELLER
22:38 Yoga teacher and physical therapist Amanda Eller decided to go for a hike through the
22:42 Hawaiian wilderness. She never returned home, and her boyfriend quickly reported her missing.
22:47 Her vehicle was found abandoned near Maui's Kahakapau Trail, but there were no signs of
22:53 Eller. She had accidentally wandered off the trail and found herself in the middle of the
22:58 remote wilderness. When it was obvious that help wasn't coming, she was forced to live off wild
23:03 plants, berries, and rainwater. After over two long and grueling weeks, Eller was finally located
23:09 by a search party and rescued via helicopter. She was in surprisingly good condition,
23:26 and was treated at a local hospital for a fractured leg.
23:36 6. BO BURGDAL In May of 2009, soldier Bo
23:40 Burgdal was working counterinsurgency in Afghanistan when his friend and fellow
23:45 officer Brian Bradshaw was fatally hit by a roadside bomb. This likely tarnished Burgdal's
23:50 outlook on the war effort. He wrote to his family a few days later, and his email was full of
23:55 critical language against the U.S. Army. Burgdal subsequently disappeared under mysterious
24:00 circumstances on June 30. He was reportedly shot by a gun in the middle of the night.
24:02 Of all the questions swirling around this young man, perhaps the most intriguing is
24:06 why did he leave his base in the first place? No one knew where he was, and it would be almost
24:11 a month before an insurgent group revealed that they were holding Burgdal prisoner. He served as
24:16 a POW until May 31, 2014, when he was freed in exchange for Taliban prisoners. We learned today
24:22 that doctors are so worried about his mental health after five years in Taliban custody,
24:27 that they've told his family not to reach out even just to say welcome back.
24:32 Later investigations showed that Burgdal was likely snatched after abandoning his post. He
24:37 was subsequently court-martialed and demoted. Talk about a not-so-welcome home.
24:42 5. Nguyen Thi Phan
24:44 Vietnamese high school student Nguyen Thi Phan vanished in 1992. Phan returned home but found
24:50 herself locked out because of the late time, so she relocated to a nearby karaoke bar. The next
24:55 morning, a disoriented Phan woke up in China. She had been taken to the country by a woman named
25:01 Thanh, who tortured her and her friends and forced them to marry older local Chinese men.
25:06 She eventually fled with the help of a local driver and returned to Hanoi. In a moment that
25:11 would be too unbelievable for fiction, Phan approached a man on the street and asked for
25:16 directions. That man happened to be her uncle. He took her to the family home, and Phan was
25:22 reunited with her family after 21 years. 4. Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry,
25:28 and Gina DeJesus This is easily one of the most famous
25:31 kidnapping stories of our time, having attained fame through its dramatic conclusion. Between 2002
25:37 and 2004, a man named Ariel Castro kidnapped the three women off the streets of Cleveland by
25:43 offering them lifts. They remained in his house for roughly a decade and were subjected to various
25:48 forms of horrible torture. It wasn't until May 6, 2013, that Berry saw her chance of escape.
25:55 Castro had accidentally left a door unlocked, and Berry was able to contact passing neighbors.
26:00 They helped Berry and her daughter escape the house, and she telephoned the police to report
26:13 the kidnappings, after which the other two were rescued. Castro was arrested that same day,
26:19 and he would later take his own life in his detention cell.
26:22 3. Elizabeth Smart, Violently ripped from her own home and her own bed in the middle of the night
26:35 Back in June of 2002, a man named Brian David Mitchell broke into the Smart household
26:41 and abducted teenager Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom. Her sister, Mary Catherine,
26:45 was also in the room at the time of the abduction, but faked being still sleeping.
26:50 Elizabeth remained with Mitchell and his wife for the next nine months. Mary Catherine suddenly
26:55 realized that the man who took her sister was the same man who had worked on their house as
27:00 a general laborer one day. A sketch of the man was drawn up and released to news outlets.
27:05 One day, while walking in Sandy, Utah, several eyewitnesses recognized Mitchell's face and
27:10 notified police of his location. He and his wife were successfully captured, and Smart was finally
27:15 rescued. She's sharing her story to help other victims of abuse.
27:24 2. J.C. Dugard For 18 years, she was forbidden to say her
27:30 own name, so this is how her book, A Stolen Life, begins.
27:34 J.C. Dugard was tased and snatched off the street while approaching her school bus on June 10,
27:39 1991. The perpetrators were husband and wife duo Philip and Nancy Garrido.
27:44 Despite numerous people witnessing the kidnapping, the trail went cold,
27:48 and no one heard anything of Dugard for the next 18 years. In that time, Dugard was consistently
27:55 assaulted by Philip Garrido and bore him two daughters. The case was finally broken by a
28:00 special events manager named Lisa Campbell. Garrido was visiting UC Berkeley with his two daughters,
28:05 and their quote "erratic behavior" caught Campbell's attention. After getting his name through
28:10 the booking of an appointment, she notified the police, which eventually led to Garrido's arrest.
28:15 Dugard was finally rescued and reunited with her mother on August 27, 2009, now almost 30 years old.

28:48 Number 1. Stephen Stainer
28:52 Twenty-five years ago, the nation was shocked and overjoyed to hear that two missing children
28:58 had been found alive. On December 4, 1972, Stephen Stainer was abducted by Irvin Murphy and Kenneth
29:05 Parnell. Stainer proceeded to live as Parnell's son, while being continuously subjected to his
29:10 depraved whims. Parnell attempted to use Stainer in other kidnappings, but Stainer was uncooperative.
29:16 In fact, on the night of March 1, 1980, he and a young boy named Timmy White escaped Parnell's
29:22 house and made their way to a local police station. Stainer was finally reunited with his
29:27 family the following day. He wasn't the boy they remembered, but a teenager now. He found it
