With 'Texit,' some want to make Texas a nation once again

Texas, last an independent country around 180 years ago, now boasts a pocket of people who want that status back, advocating a divorce from the United States they call "Texit". Its advocates say the dramatic decoupling -- loosely inspired by Britain's Brexit from the European Union -- would help resolve a roiling immigration border crisis and a fight with Washington over who controls the border with Mexico.

00:10 Let Texans govern Texas. Let California govern California. Let New York govern New York.
00:15 And let's not validate or surrender our sovereignty to anyone outside of that.
00:19 Texans are different. They are always Texans before they are Americans.
00:26 And it's just in the people, in the heart of the people to be free. And we've had enough.
00:37 But the political situation has never been more favorable to us. People are talking about...
00:42 I have the shirts and you get to go home with it and you can wear it for us tomorrow. And then you get to share.
00:47 You know, it doesn't matter who controls the White House.
00:51 Because who's really in control of the federal government are the 2.5 million unelected federal bureaucrats that will never show up on your ballot.
00:59 You know, when you look at the issues that we have between Texas and the federal government,
01:04 it's pretty clear that the federal government can't be fixed.
01:08 The easiest path for Texas to solve these challenges that we have with the federal government is just no longer be a part of it.
01:14 We know here in Texas the only way that Texas will ever be able to secure the border and have a sensible immigration system
01:21 is to do like 200 other countries around the world and do so as a self-governing independent nation.
