01:44 Football history in Sialkot, it's almost a century old.
01:50 It started before even the partition,
01:53 before even the Pakistan was formed, got independence.
01:59 It started when the British people were here.
02:02 And they bring some footballs along with them
02:05 for their matches here, for their league, for their games.
02:09 And during that time, some of the balls, they're torn open.
02:13 They got destroyed.
02:14 And it was very difficult for them
02:16 to send these balls back to their country and mend them.
02:19 They used to play football.
02:42 It was made in England at that point.
02:44 And they need to repair the ball.
02:48 And then they send this ball to a settler in the city.
02:52 And this settler, nobody knows his name.
02:55 And this settler was so smart.
02:58 He not only repaired the ball, but also he
03:03 made a copy of the ball look like the similar type of ball
03:07 from the vegetable tan leather.
03:09 [BALLS ROLLING]
03:12 And first, who produced the soccer balls
03:23 from where we got this labor?
03:25 Basically, they were the cobblers
03:27 who started producing the balls.
03:31 Because they got the idea for the balls, the panels layout.
03:35 And they were the cobblers who started to stitch the ball.
03:37 [COBBLER MAKING SOCCER BALLS]
03:41 And slowly, the cobblers, they start to produce.
03:46 And their skills got matured.
03:48 And after a certain time, they said, OK, why not,
03:55 instead of buying the balls and bringing them to here,
03:58 why not we bring some panels and ask these guys
04:00 to produce this for us?
04:01 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:05 And that point, for so many years,
04:20 Sialkot was the only city in the whole continent
04:23 where the balls were being made, of course,
04:26 with the vegetable tan leather.
04:28 And it was stitched by hand.
04:29 It was cut by hand.
04:31 It was printed by hand.
04:33 Everything was done by hand.
04:34 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:38 The registered factory that started exporting and officially
04:42 started its production in Sialkot was formed in 1935.
04:47 That was the first factory.
04:48 They were doing hand stitches at that time.
04:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:54 The leather was used as the outer skin of the ball.
04:58 And slowly, by this time, the people
05:00 start to develop this skill more and more in this industry.
05:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:07 My great-grandfather started the business of the raw leather
05:11 from where we come into this business.
05:14 When India and Pakistan were joined together,
05:17 so we were trading with Hindus, like in India,
05:20 now which is India.
05:21 But at that time, it was subcontinent.
05:24 So when we got separated in 1947,
05:27 so since that, we become in Pakistan
05:29 because we are originated in Sialkot.
05:33 And my great-grandfather, he was one of the first,
05:37 you can say, who produced the soccer ball in Pakistan
05:40 when we become the Pakistan in 1947.
05:47 And in 1956, we established this company.
05:51 And since that, it is going on.
05:53 First, it was in real leather production.
05:56 Then time by time, decade by decade,
05:59 it is turning into the different materials.

06:42 There are different type of balls,
06:44 but really, the hand-stitched ball is one of the, I think,
06:49 ball which is always been evergreen,
06:54 like if you produce in hand-stitched, in real leather,
06:58 or in synthetic material.
07:00 Because the people like this ball.
07:03 The people are in the village.
07:08 Like if I talk about the decades back,
07:12 they learn how to stitch the hand-stitched ball.
07:14 And since then, they only know this.
07:16 And those people who are associated with us,
07:19 they want this business because they only know this.

26:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
26:50 We started in 1991 as a hand stitch factory.
26:55 But later, we start to develop more and more materials
26:59 and more technologies.
27:01 And by the mid '20s, like 2005 and 2006,
27:05 we develop a new technology, which is
27:07 called thermo-bonded technology.
27:09 Here, we don't need stitches to bind two panels together.
27:14 Instead of stitching, we introduce glue.
27:17 [HORSE HOOVES CLOPPING]
27:20 So here, this was a ball, which can be made in a machine,
27:29 which has all the standards uniformly
27:32 across all the production parameters.
27:34 One ball to another, it's almost the same.
27:36 There's no difference, which was a limitation in hand stitch.
27:40 Because when you are stitching early in the morning,
27:42 your strength is different as compared to the afternoon.
27:45 So sometime, there was a difference in one ball
27:48 to the other.
27:49 But by developing thermo-bonded technology,
27:52 where the ball is glued in a machine,
27:55 we control the performance of the ball.
27:57 And standard and the quality from one ball to another
28:00 was uniform.
28:01 [HORSE HOOVES CLOPPING]
28:09 Hand stitching ball is, as I told you,
28:12 this is now obsolete technology.
28:15 Only very few numbers are being made.
28:18 Because machine-stitched ball is very soft and very good.
28:23 Playability is wonderful.
28:25 When you are heading the ball, it's
28:27 very soft on your head also.
28:30 So when you start playing with the machine-stitched ball
28:35 or thermo-bonded ball or high-quality laminated ball,
28:40 it seems very difficult to use the hand-stitched ball again.
28:44 So this is why the new technology is giving you
28:47 comfort in playing.
28:49 So going back is almost impossible then.
28:52 [MUSIC PLAYING]
28:55 [HORSE HOOVES CLOPPING]
28:58 [MACHINE WHINING]
29:01 So still in the market, you might find some hand-stitched.
29:24 But these are for some niche markets, some national games,
29:28 some people who still like the old technologies as a souvenir,
29:31 or maybe they have some connection.
29:33 [MACHINE WHINING]
29:36 So hand-stitched, Pakistan did start.
29:43 Sialkot did start with hand-stitched.
29:45 But like any product, its lifecycle went down.
29:48 And now there are more technologies,
29:50 which has taken its place.
29:51 [MUSIC PLAYING]
29:54 The people who were stitchers at that time,
30:01 who are producing hand-stitched ball,
30:03 who are sewing the balls with hand,
30:05 we transfer the same people.
30:08 We taught them the new skill set.
30:10 And they are now producing.
30:11 And the people who already know the product,
30:13 the parameters of the product, the patches,
30:16 how to connect them, these are the best people for us
30:19 to train on new technologies.

40:05 We have a very good connection with each other
40:07 while passing whole day in different halls
40:10 in different side of areas.
40:13 Sometime we organize some programs for them in the night
40:17 just for their relaxation because there are many workers
40:20 that who come from out of station.
40:22 So we also have to take care for them as well.

40:59 Involving community is very important,
41:19 especially in the sports activities.
41:22 Even in Pakistan, the cricket is mostly played,
41:26 and football is not so much popular.
41:28 But we have rebuilt our own field ground,
41:32 and we have a very strong team here.
41:34 Pakistan is known for its love for cricket.
41:42 This is absolutely true.
41:44 Why?
41:45 Because we were ruled by Britishers,
41:48 and after partition, this was the game which we adopted
41:51 and still up till today, it was the most favorite game
41:54 here in Pakistan.
41:56 Football, we try our maximum.
41:59 We have many local teams.
42:01 We also have one of the best street children
42:04 team in Pakistan.
42:05 And we have been in contact with this team since eight years now.
42:11 We are supporting them with the equipment, with football.
42:14 So this is how we try to introduce this game.
42:17 And I believe in coming years, especially when we see
42:20 the street children team, this will be coming a big and big
42:23 thing in coming years.
42:24 Football is a performance product.
42:40 It has the most visibility as a product in the world.
42:44 If you imagine in one playground,
42:46 there are thousands of people watching.
42:48 There are 22 players playing, but there is only one ball
42:52 who is after everybody, is looking at this ball.
42:54 So the performance should be uniform.
42:57 And to get this high-level performance,
42:59 you need to have a high level of skill set.
43:02 This is what is available in Sialkot.
43:04 And this is not here since like 20 or 30 years.
43:08 It's been almost more than 100 years
43:11 that this skill set is being developed.
43:14 [MACHINERY WHIRRING]
43:17 The main journey from old technology
43:29 to the new technology is done through research and development.
43:33 And we are a very strong R&D team.
43:36 We have the best laboratory available.
43:38 So 2014 World Cup came to us.
43:41 At that time, we had to develop certain machines, which
43:44 are semi-robotic machines also.
43:47 But it was a very hard job.
43:49 It was very big teamwork.
43:51 All the engineers and sub-engineers
43:53 were involved at that point.
43:55 They were working in shifts, and they were working
43:58 like around the clock.
44:00 Some people in the day, some people in the second shift,
44:03 some people in the third shift.
44:05 So because the time was so much limited,
44:07 we need to do like that.
44:12 Alhamdulillah, we just completed in a certain given time.

45:39 First time in the history of football,
45:41 then Adidas used metallic color.
45:45 Manufacturing a World Cup ball, it's
45:50 always a proud moment for any manufacturer.
45:53 This is a triumph.
45:55 And when we reached this level, it was 2014,
45:59 the Brazil World Cup ball.
46:01 And it was something for us.
46:03 Our team, our people worked very hard.
46:06 And Alhamdulillah, we reached to a level
46:08 where we can produce a product which can be played
46:11 as a World Cup match ball.
46:13 And this was our first introduction at this stage.
46:17 And Alhamdulillah, since then, we are manufacturing
46:20 most of the iconic balls.
46:22 That includes also World Cup match ball
46:24 and finale Champions League and many league balls.
