00:00 - St. Vincent, welcome. - Thank you.
00:03 - What's it like to be here tonight? - It's really cute and fun.
00:07 It's cute and fun. I've only been here once and it was like 10 years ago.
00:11 - And so, glad to be back. - Welcome back.
00:14 I mean, you're here tonight presenting the Rising Star Award to the wonderful Last Dinner Party.
00:19 - Yeah. - How did you come across them? Are you a fan?
00:22 I mean, I came across them kind of, I think, the same way everybody did,
00:26 when they got their debut album. And I love it. It's adventurous.
00:30 It's like romantic and dramatic. They're doing great. Yeah.
00:36 What are your thoughts on the band? Obviously, coming up, they're doing so well with this debut.
00:40 What's it like to see that, to see the new talent emerging and paving the way?
00:44 I'm just so glad to see, like, more girls playing guitars.
00:52 That makes me happy, as a guitar player.
00:55 Because they do play your signature. We were just talking together.
00:57 I know. I'm so touched. I feel so honoured by that.
01:00 That must be amazing to see, especially influencing so many women to play the guitar.
01:04 - What's it like for you to see that? - Yeah. I don't know.
01:06 I just saw, like, Olivia started her tour in the States and she has a purple one of my guitar
01:12 and she's playing it, and the Last Dinner Party.
01:15 Also, I think, just in general, the guitar is...
01:19 I've seen my guitar get played in every genre of music and that makes me really happy, too.
01:25 Congratulations, as well. We just heard new music from you.
01:28 - Oh, yeah. - What can you tell us about the new album?
01:31 The new album is called All Born Screaming and it comes out in April.
01:36 Yeah, it's a heavier record. I think it's like black and white and all the colours in a fire.
01:42 That's what it sounds like to me.
01:44 We see a lot of collaborations on this album, as well.
01:46 What was it like working with all these people?
01:49 I had Dave Grohl play drums, I had Josh Frees on drums, Justin Meldal-Johnson, Mark Giuliana.
01:55 I worked with my very good friend Kate LeBon, who's one of my favourite artists ever
02:01 and a great producer in her own right, so I just feel lucky to get to work with my friends.
02:05 What did you take writing these songs and then recording them with other people?
02:09 Do you say that they have an external influence on how they turned out?
02:13 Of course, but it's the first record that I self-produced completely.
02:17 I've co-produced all my work, but this was the one that I was like,
02:21 "I need to go in and just wander into the woods alone and find out."
02:26 If you could sum up the new album in three words, what would they be?
02:30 Heaven and hell.
02:33 And what have you been listening to tonight? Well, today, what's been on the heat for you?
02:38 Today? What have I been listening to?
02:41 I'm still just listening to Cocteau Twins in Heaven or Las Vegas.
02:46 That's the only thing that makes me feel okay about the world.
02:50 [silence]
