One of few LP recorded as soloist by American avant-garde jazz saxophonist, flautist and singer Monty Waters from Modesto, California. On "The black cat" Waters works with a fascinating quartet that includes Japanese guitarist Yoshiaki Masuo, Ronnie Boykins on bass and George Avaloz on drums. Waters and Masuo play together in a mode that's almost a lyrical take on some of Ornette Coleman's harmelodic recordings, particularly because of the way that the guitar comps behind the rhythm parts, letting Waters blow over the top in solo formation, while other times the guitar is in a more tradition role.
