00:00 Former Minister Rafiq Deh Aziz's proposal to establish an ad-hoc National Recovery Council
00:07 has failed to garner support from an economist and a business sustainability group.
00:12 Jeffrey Williams of the Malaysia University of Science and Technology discounted it outright,
00:17 saying such a council would give the impression that the economy is in crisis.
00:21 He said the unity government's problems are legacy issues which require a different
00:26 approach, adding that it is better to establish an independent economic policy institution
00:31 to formulate long-term strategies and analyze short-term ones.
00:35 Meanwhile, Malaysia SME Sustainable Entrepreneurship Organization treasurer Angus Ng offers conditional
00:41 support for the idea.
00:43 He said an ad-hoc council would be valuable only if the government heeds the advice of
00:47 its members.
00:48 Such a council may be rendered redundant if it was chaired by the Prime Minister since
00:52 he would have the final say.
00:54 However, Small and Medium Enterprises Association chairman William Ng said the proposal may
00:59 be worth considering if certain conditions are met.
01:03 He said only the best brains in the country should sit on the council, with representation
01:07 from the public and private sectors, as well as civil society.
01:11 Ng highlighted the need for innovative ideas from unconventional sources, stressing that
01:16 membership of the council should not be limited to the same associations and government agencies.
