Public opinion: What needs to happen in the Spring Budget?

We are out for peoples opinions on the spring budget and asking what chancellor Jeremy Hunt can do to save broken Britain. This week saw the worst opinion poll results for the Conservatives since polling began in the 1970s, can the chancellors budget also save the Tory party from electoral disaster in the general election?

00:00 Well, he's certainly going to have to put something into high streets, definitely, because
00:07 high streets are definitely suffering. And obviously he needs to help people more with
00:14 the cost of living crisis. I think it's the only way round that they can do it.
00:19 I don't even know what's going on in the world at the minute. I really don't know what they're
00:22 planning to do on the budget. I mean, my big thing is like kids trying to get on the house
00:28 market and getting mortgages. I wish something could happen with the Bank of England rates
00:34 sort of go down a bit. Something would help the kids try and get houses, because the house
00:39 prices and the mortgage rate is just crazy. It's just frightening.
00:43 It's hard to know. There's so much wrong with our country, you know, and if Labour come
00:49 in, I don't think it'll be any better. I don't know what the answer is, but stop taxing people
00:55 so heavily. That would help.
00:58 One of my biggest concerns is with local authority funding. Leeds Council in particular, their
01:03 budget has been cut by... basically, Leeds Council have got no money to spend on local
01:10 services, things like that. And the council has said they're going to have to put council
01:14 tax up as a result of that. I would absolutely want to see more funding available for local
01:19 government.
01:20 I think more support getting onto the property ladder, possibly more support with careers
01:25 as well, and especially more support in education and stopping... you know, it's very much set
01:30 in a way that people have to kind of decide their careers quite early on. And then that
01:35 expectation from the previous generation that, you know, you can't pop around jobs too much.
01:41 And you know, financially, it leaves a lot of people kind of in difficult positions.
01:45 The problem is, since COVID, every country has faced a problem. Are you getting my point
01:49 now? And then they need to take care of their people. But what they should do, what is causing
01:54 problems is that two thirds of people's salary are going on mortgage, two thirds of people's
01:59 salary are going on rent. So they should do rent cap, mortgage cap.
02:06 Possibly more police on the streets, where we will feel safer. I think there's a lack
02:14 of bobbies on the beat where they're actually walking, not driving around in cars. And I
02:21 would love to see some of our energy bills be cut. Cost of living, people are really
02:28 struggling these days. Put that money into the NHS, put more money
02:34 into youth programmes, support youth activities instead of bundling into random acts of kindness.
02:42 I feel like if younger people had more like say and acknowledgement from the government.
02:48 Just making sure that we are safe here. So for that, I can say I would dedicate that
02:54 day to her. With the Tories, they promise so much and
02:59 as usual, not only don't deliver, but often do the opposite.
