00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we are counting our fingers and toes to work out the Final Fantasy
00:11 games with the most playable characters. We are focusing our ranking on recruitable party members
00:17 rather than guest characters who only become playable temporarily, but we will be using them
00:22 for tiebreakers. Let's do it. Before we continue, we publish content all week long so be sure to
00:28 subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos. Final Fantasy 3
00:34 Similar to Final Fantasy 15, Final Fantasy 3 also includes only 4 primary party members.
00:47 Luneth, Ark, Refia and Ingus accompany the player throughout their entire journey. It
00:53 knocked Final Fantasy 15 off of this list however because it does have 7 guest characters rather
00:59 than the 2 seen in Final Fantasy 15. The shame in this entry is that the original version of
01:04 Final Fantasy 3 did not delve deeply into the personalities of its 4 main playable characters.
01:09 Fortunately, the guest characters in the game compensated for this lack,
01:13 each possessing well-defined characteristics. Final Fantasy 5
01:21 Final Fantasy 5 stands out as one of the only 2 entries in the series alongside the
01:30 original Final Fantasy that doesn't include any guest characters. While guest characters can add
01:35 depth to the gameplay experience and give the player a new perspective on an area or gameplay
01:40 section, their absence in Final Fantasy 5 arguably results in a more cohesive and fleshed out party,
01:46 with personalities that hold the weight of the entire game. It also allows for me to officially
01:51 make my 46th penis joke in a mojo video. I guess when it comes to adding guest characters to expand
01:58 the character roster, Final Fantasy 5 proves definitively that size really doesn't matter.
02:04 Final Fantasy 13 As an adamant believer that Final Fantasy 13
02:12 deserves to be thrown into the fiery pits of the fire cavern, the majority of my hate revolves
02:17 around how uninspired the main roster of characters are. With 6 main campaign characters and 2 guests,
02:23 the game feels less like an epic Final Fantasy adventure, and more like a slow slog through a
02:28 world that takes far too long to become anything. With these weak, generic characters, it's worth
02:34 mentioning that Lightning can be heavily considered as the exception, with some even
02:39 hailing her as one of the most interesting protagonists of the entire series.
02:43 Final Fantasy 8 Final Fantasy 8 is easily one of the most
02:56 divisive games in the entire series. Some love it, some hate it, but discourse has always remained
03:01 oddly civil for internet squabbles. Squall serves as a compelling main protagonist, though a little
03:07 too edgy cool guy at times, but it's the supporting cast that really sets this game apart from other
03:13 entries. The 5 other main party members are beautifully endearing, all with their own well
03:19 crafted directions and motivations. Our guest characters, Cipher and Edie, have truly compelling
03:25 story arcs as well. While Final Fantasy 8 isn't the first or last game in the series where players
03:30 control antagonists, the significance of Cipher and Edie within the party surpasses their predecessors.
03:36 And let's not forget that within our main story is the story of Laguna, Kiros and Ward,
03:41 characters who we get to play as from time to time. Why doesn't this game get more love?
03:46 Final Fantasy X Not only is Final Fantasy X arguably one of
03:58 the best Final Fantasy entries to exist, it certainly has one of the strongest casts of
04:02 characters to be assembled, with possibly one exception, sorry to be a Kamari hater.
04:08 With a full 7 person roster of characters, all of whom are exceptionally handy in combat,
04:13 Final Fantasy X makes full use of the playable characters by giving them one of the most
04:18 extensive and interesting upgrade systems we've seen in a Final Fantasy game to date.
04:22 With only one temporary guest character in the form of Maester Seymour, this entry was
04:27 just beaten out by our newest Final Fantasy entry as of March 2024.
04:33 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth One of the most anticipated Final Fantasy
04:38 games ever released, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth takes the beauty and imagination set up by
04:43 the first entry in this trilogy and throws it into the beautiful large world of Gaia.
04:48 With every new entry in this trilogy, we're expecting more players from the original game
04:53 to be added into the roster, and although we are missing Cid and Vincent in this entry
04:57 as playable characters, we are still given 7 brilliant party members and 2 guest characters.
05:03 Now as this game is so new, we're going to avoid spoilers entirely by gossing over this
05:08 whole entry as quickly as possible.
05:09 Bada bing bada next entry.
05:12 Final Fantasy IX Alright, let's start talking proper numbers
05:21 because it is about to ramp up heavily, hold on to your blitz balls.
05:25 Despite some criticism regarding their design feeling like a regression, Final Fantasy IX
05:30 proved over time that they were bringing the series full circle, taking it back to its
05:34 roots and introducing a cast that remains truly outstanding even by modern standards.
05:39 Characters like Vivi, Steiner and Zidane shine brightly, while Princess Garnet upholds the
05:44 series tradition of including royalty in the main party.
05:47 Each character in the game boasts surprising depth, contributing to one of the series most
05:52 exceptional parties, once fully formed and experiencing the events of the game together.
05:58 One of the difficulties of Final Fantasy is that almost every character exudes main character
06:02 energy and making a large roster of characters like this function as a collective when it
06:07 comes to dialogue and motivation can be a real balancing act.
06:11 Final Fantasy IX nails it.
06:14 Final Fantasy VII It may not have the largest roster of characters
06:23 in the whole series, but it is easily the most memorable.
06:26 Final Fantasy VII put Final Fantasy on the map.
06:30 That's not to say it wasn't already on the map, but they just put it on a much, much
06:33 bigger map.
06:34 The thing that makes this game for many isn't the gameplay, although fantastic, or the story,
06:40 so captivating, it's the characters, each of whom has their own personal history, impulses
06:46 and motivations which are extensively explored.
06:49 Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith, Vincent, Kate, Sif, Cid, Yuffie and Red XIII.
06:56 When you think about each character, you remember that every single one of them is so three
07:00 dimensional with personalities and fully lived lives.
07:04 Final Fantasy VII takes the time to show you who these characters are and we thank it deeply.
07:10 Final Fantasy IV When thinking through this highly memorable
07:18 series one of the best entries is often forgotten and that is Final Fantasy IV.
07:23 Cecil stands as one of the most memorable protagonists in the series, with a rich and
07:28 intricate story arc that's filled with unexpected twists and revelations, a formula that continues
07:33 to work to this day.
07:34 Final Fantasy VII?
07:36 Final Fantasy X?
07:37 Huh?
07:38 Supporting characters such as Teller and Kane add further depth to the narrative, each grappling
07:43 with their own inner conflicts, not to mention Teller boasting easily the most impressive
07:48 moustache in gaming history.
07:50 Final Fantasy VI For those who follow this channel closely
08:03 and have learnt the lore you might know that I have a lot of love for this particular entry.
08:08 It dropped in 1994 and so did I, it was kismet.
08:12 Final Fantasy VI takes a good sweet amount of time to let you know all about their 14
08:17 main party members and it does a beautiful job of giving the player a lot of freedom
08:21 in deciding who their main character is and who they're going to control when moving around
08:24 the map.
08:26 Even though Terra is technically the main character.
08:28 Final Fantasy VI has such a massive roster that it allows for parties to split up giving
08:33 the story interesting ebbs and flows.
08:49 Thanks for watching!
