Although the lake has long been a hot spot for ufologists, even when dry it’s hardly the place weary intergalactic travellers would travel to for a spot of tennis. So, what exactly are the origins of two strange structures floating amidst the Lake George waters? Tim the Yowie Man investigates.

00:00 With its current high water levels and recent beautiful sunny weather, more and more adventurers
00:11 are getting out onto the waters of Lake Gorge.
00:15 A couple of kayakers have reported to me in recent weeks of sighting something unusual
00:21 out there in the middle of the lake.
00:23 A semi-submerged, rusting steel platform.
00:28 I wonder what it's all about.
00:31 But of course, there's only one way to find out.
00:48 One sailor reckons this could be some sort of fishing wharf out in the middle of nowhere,
00:52 while a kayaker suggested to me it's a UFO landing pad.
00:58 It has got some unusual solar lights on it, so who knows.
01:02 However, of course, the real reason this is here is it's part of a scientific experiment.
01:07 It was conducted in the early 1990s.
01:09 There was about eight towers along the north-south axis of Lake Gorge.
01:14 It was conducted by Dr Ian Young to study the wave motion out here on the lake.
01:20 It was actually sponsored by the US Navy, the research was.
01:23 The findings were that the waves here on the shallow Lake Gorge are very steep and also
01:29 the crest close together.
01:30 That's probably why there's lots of boating accidents here on the lake when there's water
01:35 in it like it is now.
01:37 But generally, the findings from his study, which went for two years or so out here, were
01:42 to such an extent that they're applied all over the world.
01:46 The data is used in wave models all around the planet by oil rig designers and yes, even
01:51 the US Navy.
01:53 So there's not many of these left.
01:54 There was about eight towers on the north-south axis along the lake.
01:58 This is one of the only left standing.
02:01 One thing is for sure, it's out in the middle of nowhere and it's definitely not a UFO landing
02:09 pad.
02:10 However, I might give it a go.
02:15 Beam me up Scotty!
