Scientists create 'mini-organs' for the first time from human stem cells taken from wombs

Taking cells from amniotic fluid gets around regulations about taking stem cells directly from foetal tissue.

00:28 What we've been able to take this time
00:31 is cells that are floating in the amniotic fluid
00:35 and come from the fetus.
00:37 And specifically, these cells come from three organs
00:40 we've seen, from the kidney, the lung,
00:43 and the intestine of the fetus.
00:45 So we've been able to collect these cells
00:48 and grow outside in a petri dish as mini organs.

01:00 What we've been able to show is that by doing that balloon,
01:14 indeed, there's an improvement of the lung.
01:18 And in fact, the organoids themselves
01:20 are telling us they're different after the balloon.
01:24 So it means that something is happening to that lung,
01:27 thanks to the balloon.
01:29 And this is the first time that we
01:31 have been able to monitor that.
