00:00 I think they're working hard enough to do that.
00:02 When you look at the tape last year,
00:03 the secondary didn't have a lot of length.
00:06 They didn't have a lot of height, didn't have a lot of length.
00:08 Do you feel like what they've done in the portal has --
00:11 and with the high school recruiting --
00:12 has started to address that
00:14 and change the look of that secondary room?
00:16 I certainly can't take any credit
00:18 for those guys that came in.
00:21 But they did a great job with the guys
00:22 that are in because, number one, they're great human beings.
00:25 All of those guys are,
00:27 and that's what you got to start with naturally.
00:30 There's a great mixture of guys in that secondary
00:33 that came in with what their best physical attributes
00:37 would be, so we're really excited about that.
00:40 And I feel like we've got some versatile guys
00:43 that probably over time
00:44 will play more than one position for us.
00:46 So that provides depth and competition both for us,
00:49 which is what we're looking for.
00:50 Coach, what are some of the challenges
00:52 of a transition like this
00:53 where you're learning new faces, players, new skill sets?
00:56 Sure, yeah, I think change is not easy on anybody.
01:00 Obviously, in this day and age of college football,
01:02 there's more change throughout the course of a year
01:04 than there once was.
01:06 So I think the number one thing is you're trying to build trust
01:11 as a coach coming in, coach to coach,
01:14 as a player coming in, player to player.
01:17 And then that's got to go clearly coach to player
01:19 and player to coach.
01:21 So all that trust we're trying to build collectively
01:25 within our walls, whether you're an offensive guy
01:27 or a defensive guy, but that's probably the hardest thing
01:30 is to build that trust quickly.
01:33 And typically, it's a short period of time, right?
01:36 And that's the difference.
01:38 Coach, what are some of the biggest things
01:39 you're going to be looking at next week,
01:40 diving into the tape coming off of this week?
01:43 What are some of the biggest things
01:44 you're going to be looking for?
01:45 Sure, well, number one,
01:46 the guys that have picked up what their responsibilities are
01:50 that we're asking them to do, number one, right?
01:53 Just assignment-based defense.
01:56 And the part that helps is if you're a great communicator.
01:59 So some of our guys are great communicators right now.
02:02 Some of our guys are learning how to do that.
02:04 So those are really the two things
02:07 that are most important to us right now.
02:09 Then I feel like we'll start to tweak alignments
02:11 and start to tweak where guys are going to play
02:13 and those types of things that would become,
02:16 you know, more evident at the end of the spring.
02:18 How excited are you to try to put Dante Corleone
02:21 in the best position possible
02:23 to make sure he has the biggest impact?
02:24 Yeah, absolutely.
02:25 Well, he's had a great offseason,
02:27 so which is really exciting.
02:28 And he's in better condition
02:30 than he was this time a year ago, which is huge.
02:33 And that's a start.
02:35 He's a great leader for us.
02:37 And football is very important to Dante.
02:40 And he loves football.
02:41 So if you're that kind of guy,
02:42 you're going to obviously have a chance to be successful.
02:45 And that's why he has had great success so far in his career.
02:48 You've led defenses and led teams in the past.
02:52 With this group and with this time in your careers,
02:55 what kind of attitude do you want the players to have?
02:58 Well, yeah, absolutely.
03:00 What you'd like for them to collectively compete together
03:03 and also be great teammates doing that.
03:06 And that's probably one of the things
03:08 that's hardest to get right now
03:09 because everybody wants to play pretty quickly.
03:12 So I feel like we've got a group
03:14 that is working together to do that.
03:17 You know, they communicate with each other on the field.
03:19 They help one another out.
03:20 They're happy when other guys make plays,
03:22 which I think we saw that today.
03:24 So as a collective unit, you're trying to build camaraderie,
03:29 which is probably one thing
03:31 that is the hardest thing to capture nowadays
03:35 than it once was.
03:37 But hopefully that's what, as a staff,
03:41 we're showing that camaraderie as a group.
03:43 And hopefully that carries over to our guys.
03:45 And then we can embody that as a defense.
03:49 When you got here, you said you were going to take a look
03:51 and try to sort through everything
03:53 to help determine the scheme.
03:54 We've seen the three safeties.
03:56 Do you feel like you've got enough depth there
03:58 and you've got enough quality and talent that it fits?
04:02 Currently, we do, I would say.
04:03 Yeah, obviously we've got to stay healthy.
04:06 You know, for us, starting in this structure
04:10 is, for us, the best way to go
04:12 because it's difficult to get to that structure
04:14 if you don't start with it.
04:15 So here in the next couple of weeks,
04:18 we're going to move some things around
04:19 to do some different things.
04:21 But we felt like, as a staff,
04:23 and certainly with Coach Satterfield,
04:25 that the most foreign thing to all these guys
04:28 would be that structure.
04:29 So what a great way for us to start,
04:31 do that for three consecutive days here,
04:34 get ourselves on spring break, and then regroup,
04:36 come on back and see what the next thing is we need to do.
04:38 You want to tell us what those things are going to be like?
04:42 You said you'd be here.
04:44 I will be. I promise.
04:46 Your coaching safeties, how different has that been
04:49 from your last, you know, straight linebacker?
04:52 Yeah, yeah. It has been different.
04:54 It's been awesome, to be honest with you.
04:57 And I think coming in as the only new guy
05:00 has been a great benefit for me, too.
05:02 So it's made me a better communicator
05:04 and a better coach, in my opinion.
05:07 It's a lot different if you even have one more guy with you
05:10 that's speaking the same language.
05:12 So I'm coming in not speaking the same language
05:15 as the entire defensive staff that was here.
05:18 So at the time, I didn't know how that was going to go.
05:21 But I feel like it's made me a better coach to this point,
05:24 and I've enjoyed that.
05:26 And I would say, again, the group of safeties
05:30 that we're working with here are unbelievable kids.
05:32 So it's been a blessing.
05:34 What's the over/under on the coffee count
05:36 now that you're reporting to everybody?
05:38 Well, you know what happened to me.
05:40 So I'm staying at the hotel, right?
05:42 And the Starbucks was opening at 5:30, okay?
05:46 Well, that was good for most days, you know?
05:50 So the gal in there working got used to me being there.
05:53 I was waiting at the door.
05:54 So then she started opening at 5, okay?
05:58 So awesome.
05:59 So I was -- you know, we had a deal, good.
06:02 Well, then they changed their hours.
06:03 In the spring, they put a new sign up.
06:04 Now it's 6.
06:06 So now I can't get a cup of coffee down
06:08 before I get down to the hill.
06:09 I got to get my first one at the building.
06:11 So, yeah.
06:12 And Terry's already had George before.
06:13 That's right. It's one less.
06:15 So whatever the count is, it's one less now.
06:17 Yeah. Yeah.
06:18 Chad asked you about coaching the safeties position.
06:22 How did you come to that decision
06:23 to kind of plug and play as the safeties coach
06:26 instead of going to the other?
06:27 Yeah, great question.
06:28 So naturally, the first thing you do when you get any place
06:31 is meet with everybody that you don't know.
06:34 So that was basically everybody in the building for me.
06:36 So I started with our coaches that very first couple days.
06:40 Once they got off the road, I met with those guys
06:44 because I didn't know them at all
06:47 outside of a name and a face on the website, you know.
06:50 So I did that.
06:52 Collectively, we worked together
06:54 to try to find what the best fit was for everybody.
06:57 Naturally, we tried to keep some guys in the positions
07:00 that they had been coaching
07:01 because they had a great experience there
07:03 and they're great coaches in those spots.
07:05 So that helped us, too.
07:06 So we remained, you know, we kept some continuity in that
07:11 with obviously Walt and Kerry.
07:13 You know, Brass is coaching three linebackers
07:16 now instead of two.
07:17 So that's - it doesn't sound like it,
07:20 but that's a big adjustment
07:21 because your eyes have got to be in a lot of spots then.
07:24 And then collectively with me and Nate
07:26 coaching the safeties, that's been, honestly,
07:29 a great union, to be honest with you.
07:31 So that's really where I started,
07:33 by just individually meeting with the staff
07:35 and then collectively coming together with a common theme.
07:38 You didn't give Walt a look at safety?
07:42 We didn't.
07:43 Though, you know, he is one of the few D-line coaches
07:47 that will hang in there with us when we're watching seven on
07:49 seven, so I give Walt a lot of credit.
07:52 Yep.
07:53 Thanks, guys.
