00:00 Despite all the challenges that the economic sectors face and threaten them with the financial
00:06 crisis, the industrial sector in Lebanon has been able since 2022 to prove its ability
00:12 to reject the economy, where it has witnessed a noticeable growth in investment and contributed
00:18 to the increase of the national industry share in local markets to about 60% in 2023, after
00:24 it had imported 70% of its needs, according to the head of the economic bodies, which
00:30 confirmed to CNBC Arabia that it has gained the confidence of the citizens and proven
00:35 its ability to compete according to standards that are in line with international standards.
00:40 In 2022 and 2023, we will give 780 new industrial licenses. These new factories opened
00:48 in addition to the old factories that expanded production lines. I will give you one number.
00:54 In 2018, consumption of supermarkets was 30% of Lebanese industry and 70% imported.
01:04 But today we have 60% Lebanese industry and 40% imported. We are optimistic and the industry
01:10 still has a long way to go and it wants to continue.
01:13 So the local industry has recovered well during a period of time and new factories have been
01:18 opened and several innovative lines and diverse industries have been established, where the
01:23 number of factories that were established between 2019 and 2023 has increased from 6,208 to
01:31 7,128 factories registered in the export documents and Lebanese industrial institutions, most
01:38 of which are specialized in the production of food and medicine. In parallel, many non-registered
01:45 competitive industrial institutions are being established, which rely on smuggling through
01:50 borders and tax evasion to grow the illegal economy by 60%.
01:55 This is a very dangerous issue. Very dangerous because, first of all, there is no control.
02:02 We are competing with illegal competitors. Illegal companies pay taxes and VAT.
02:10 Even if the class is the same, there is a difference between 11% and 25% only in the tax issue
02:20 between two companies.
02:21 The biggest difficulty we have today is the issue of energy.
02:23 The cost is very high in Lebanon. Naturally, factories spend a lot of energy.
02:27 This is a very important and noticeable increase in exports, which is necessary.
