Gerringong Lions and Thiroul Buthchers coaches talking about thier inter-club Super Bowl
Transcript
00:00 Stuart, Djeringong Lions coach
00:02 Scott, what do you make of this game coming up against Thiril on Saturday?
00:07 Oh, well certainly got plenty of people talking. I know both in the Illawarra and Group 7
00:13 There's a been a hell of a lot of interest
00:15 Had some people from Illawarra ringing up making sure that we actually win
00:19 They're not big Thiril fans and there's probably people down here that want to see Thiril knock us off
00:23 I don't know whether it's people are divided along the group lines or they're divided along who
00:28 they don't really like. But I know there's been plenty of interest
00:32 Everyone wants to know what side we'll be putting out on the park
00:34 But yeah, hopefully it gets the crowd and the respect and it's something that builds over the next few years
00:41 Do you think this was a long time coming? This inter-club sort of Super Bowl I guess?
00:47 Yeah, I think just trying to find the right spot to play
00:50 It's always, people have said, "Oh you should play him at the end of the year"
00:53 I know Thiril's a little bit like us. You'd be lucky to find our blokes two weeks after the comp, that's for sure
01:00 And Thiril, I've known a lot of blokes that have played for them as well
01:04 And that's any side. You generally get to the grand final and you're patching blokes together
01:08 So it's probably not realistic to play it then
01:10 But then obviously at the start of the year you've got to be missing players and that
01:15 But I think you've got to go put it somewhere and this seems like a really good spot to start
01:19 And I guess what are you hoping to get out of this match?
01:22 Oh I think it'd be good, they've always probably thought of themselves as big brothers
01:28 So it'd be good to go out there and show them just how competitive we are in Group 7
01:34 It certainly won't be our grand final sort of, but a lot of players go on to representative honours
01:39 Which is great, a lot in the jersey flag, a couple even a little bit higher up
01:43 But the kids that are coming through, it'll be good for them to match themselves and see where they're at as well
01:50 So I guess you're just encouraging all the fans to come out and enjoy a spectacle?
01:56 Oh yeah, I think Saturday afternoon will be good, I know Thiruil, they tend to take the biggest crowds in Illawarra
02:03 And we like to think we've got the biggest crowds in Group 7, so it should be an interesting afternoon
02:08 Fantastic, alright
02:09 Yeah, Garrett Costello, coach of Thiruil Butchers
02:12 Garrett, obviously a big game coming up on Saturday
02:15 Do you think this Inter-Cup, I guess we call it Super Bowl, was this a long time in the making?
02:23 Oh I think so, I think it's a great initiative, it's something that gives each club that's starting their season
02:29 A bit of purpose, the last couple of weeks of training, and sort of helps Thiruil and Thiruil both get their
02:33 Premiership defences off to a good start
02:35 The value is, for us we're playing at a different venue and we're playing against different oppositions
02:40 So a really great initiative and we're really happy to be involved
02:44 And obviously it's the inaugural one, so I guess everyone wants to win the inaugural one
02:48 Yeah I guess so, nice to win, you've got to keep it in the back of your mind, it's still a trial
02:53 And it's everyone's first game of the season, so we're not putting a heap of importance on it
02:57 But every time we wear those Butchers colours we're representing our community and our sponsors mate
03:01 So we'll be looking to put our best foot forward on Saturday for sure
03:04 And obviously the squad from last year, obviously as you mentioned it's a pre-season
03:09 Tell us a bit about the squad for the weekend
03:12 Yeah we've lost a few, we've probably lost six or seven of our Grand Final team
03:17 We had pretty high turnover there, but we've been able to keep a lot of our other squad members
03:22 We'll be fairly similar on the weekend, both our halves and our hooker remains unchanged
03:27 And Steve Masters, Hayden Crosland, both our wingers remain unchanged
03:31 And we've got a lot of returning guys through the middle with Caleb Hocking, Marcus Moore, Aimee Carney and those guys
03:38 So we've been able to pick up a couple of good signings as well that's helped offset some of those guys we've lost
03:43 So looking forward to seeing Tyrell Fiumeono play his first game for the club on Saturday
03:48 And unfortunately Toby Uxley who came to us this year, he's out injured at the moment so we won't see him
03:54 But he might be able to play the following week
03:56 What's your message to the Butchers fans? Come out and support the side?
04:02 Yeah that's it, hopefully we get a few come down
04:03 I think there's a fair bit of interest in the community around the game
04:06 So we've got a bus coming down with some of the players and there's some seats available there for people that want to get a lift down with us
04:11 But it'd be great to see some Butchers supporters in the crowd, should be a great day
04:14 We've got all three grades playing so hopefully the Butchers supporters turn out for us mate
04:19 Fantastic, anything you want to add, anything you want to say?
04:21 Nah, all good mate
