00:00 What's up y'all, it's Brooke in the Delish Kitchen studios,
00:03 getting ready to prepare a coffee shop staple,
00:05 the matcha latte.
00:06 Now this frothy green drink might seem a little daunting
00:09 to pull off at home, but the truth is,
00:11 could not be simpler.
00:12 To make sure we got this right, we turned to Soray.
00:15 It's a small, elegant shrine dedicated
00:17 to premium Japanese teas to make sure we learn the secrets
00:20 to the perfect cup of matcha.
00:21 Like any solid latte, a matcha latte
00:23 is only a couple of ingredients.
00:25 You've got your matcha powder, a little bit of sweetener,
00:27 and the milk of your choice.
00:29 I like almond milk, so that's what we're gonna use,
00:31 but you can use whole milk, cashew milk,
00:33 whatever will give you a nice little bit of froth on top.
00:35 And even with those few ingredients,
00:37 one of them is optional.
00:38 You don't have to use sweetener,
00:40 but it can help take some of that seaweedy edge
00:43 off the matcha.
00:44 You can use sugar, you can use honey,
00:46 whatever sweetener you like,
00:47 as long as it'll dissolve into the latte.
00:49 Matcha is essentially just green tea,
00:51 and it comes in three different varieties.
00:53 There's ceremonial matcha, which is the most sought after.
00:56 It's silky, it's smooth, and it's known for being
00:59 the highest quality of matcha.
01:01 But you don't really need to break the bank on it.
01:03 It's the most expensive one,
01:05 and you don't necessarily need to go
01:06 for ceremonial matcha right away.
01:08 A step down from the ceremonial grade matcha
01:10 is culinary grade matcha.
01:11 That's probably what you're gonna find
01:12 in most grocery stores,
01:14 as long as you trust where you're shopping.
01:16 It's perfect for blending into smoothies
01:18 or making matcha lattes and everyday drinking.
01:20 The lowest tier is what's known as ingredient matcha.
01:23 Certainly the most affordable option,
01:25 and it's a little bit on the bitter side,
01:27 but it's still perfectly fine for culinary uses.
01:29 Since making a matcha latte requires so few ingredients,
01:33 it's really gonna come down to your technique
01:35 and your equipment.
01:36 There's three essential pieces of equipment you need
01:38 to make an excellent matcha latte at home.
01:40 The first is a traditional matcha whisk,
01:44 also called a chasen.
01:45 It's kinda shaped like a regular whisk
01:47 in that it's kind of a balloon shape,
01:48 but at the bottom,
01:50 you have all these little hooked bamboo frongs.
01:53 And what this is used for is combining the matcha
01:55 with a little bit of hot liquid
01:57 before you add the rest of the liquid to the cup.
01:59 This will make sure the matcha is completely dissolved
02:01 so you don't run into any large chunks
02:03 that are super unpleasant in your final drink.
02:06 The second important piece of equipment you're gonna need
02:08 is a fine mesh strainer like this one.
02:10 This is one you probably already have in your house,
02:12 but you wanna make sure the holes are small enough
02:14 to where you add the matcha
02:15 and it comes out in a fine powder.
02:17 You don't want it to come out in big clumps.
02:19 The final piece of equipment you're gonna need
02:21 to make an awesome cup of matcha latte at home
02:23 is a big old mug just like this one,
02:25 preferably one with a rounder base than it has a top.
02:28 This is similarly shaped to the bowl
02:30 that's traditionally used to make matcha,
02:32 which is called a chawan,
02:34 but this one has a cool little handle,
02:35 so we're gonna use this instead.
02:37 The reason this is such a big deal
02:38 is because it has a nice wide base
02:40 for the whisk to really get in there
02:42 and work the matcha around.
02:43 Honestly, guys, making a matcha latte
02:45 is easier than making a regular latte.
02:48 Aside from your equipment,
02:49 your technique also really matters here.
02:52 We're gonna use about 1 1/2 teaspoons of matcha powder.
02:56 We're gonna add that to a fine mesh sieve
02:58 over top of the mug and gently tap the sieve
03:01 until all the matcha has trickled through.
03:03 Once you've got all your matcha in the mug,
03:05 add whatever sweetener you're using.
03:06 After you get your sweetener into the mug,
03:08 you wanna take about two tablespoons of hot water,
03:11 not boiling, we don't want boiling water, just hot water,
03:13 and you're gonna use your matcha whisk to make a paste.
03:17 Making that paste is what's gonna help dissolve
03:19 the sugar and dissolve the matcha powder,
03:21 because again, we don't want any big,
03:23 unpleasant seaweedy clumps.
03:25 After you've got that paste ready to go,
03:27 it's time to start heating up the milk of choice.
03:29 I'm going with almond milk
03:30 because that's what my tummy will allow,
03:32 but you can go with whatever milk you like best.
03:34 You can heat it up in the microwave,
03:36 you can do it on the stove,
03:37 or you can be like me and use a milk frother
03:40 on your espresso machine.
03:41 Once you've got your milk all heated up and ready to go,
03:44 you're gonna add that to the mug with your matcha paste
03:46 while whisking, you wanna do it at the same time.
03:49 With the whisk, you're gonna make either an M
03:52 or a W shape, back and forth.
03:54 And that's what's gonna give you that frothy,
03:56 vibrant green matcha latte color.
03:58 Got most of the milk in my cup already,
04:00 and it's smelling really fragrant,
04:03 got that grassy, herbaceous smell to it.
04:05 I'm really excited to drink this,
04:07 but before I do that,
04:08 I'm gonna whisk the rest of this milk
04:10 until it's a little bit more bubbly,
04:12 some of my bubbles die down,
04:13 and I wanna be able to spoon some of that froth
04:15 over the top of my latte,
04:16 so that it looks like a latte,
04:18 we want it to have that latte vibe.
04:19 When we're done with that,
04:21 just gonna dust the top with a little extra matcha,
04:23 and this will be ready to drink.
04:24 Ooh, I really need someone to hurry up
04:29 and make Smell-O-Vision, what is taking so long?
04:32 This smells so good.
04:33 There's like a tiny hint of grass clipping in there,
04:36 but in the best way possible.
04:38 I like using almond milk for this kind of thing
04:40 because the nuttiness, I feel like,
04:41 really complements that earthy matcha flavor.
04:45 (gentle music)
04:47 Ooh, ooh, that's really good.
04:51 That's good, that's misunderstood, but it's really good.
04:53 I think I'm gonna top it
04:54 with just a little bit more matcha powder,
04:56 just 'cause I like the way it looks.
04:57 Oh, it's so pretty.
04:59 Oh my gosh, it's so warm, it's earthy,
05:04 and it's got like a good bit of bite to it,
05:06 'cause there's a little bit of bitterness,
05:08 but it's not too much.
05:09 I'm definitely a fan of putting sweetener
05:10 in this kind of thing,
05:11 'cause I think it gives it the right level of balance
05:13 that you're looking for,
05:14 in something like a latte.
05:15 This is delicious, and you saw how easy it was to make.
05:18 It was just powder, sugar.
05:20 This is how I wanna start my morning.
