00:19 Founded in April 1949 in Washington,
00:22 its initial objective was to strengthen ties in the face of the perceived Soviet threat.
00:27 To the founding 12 countries, others have been added with the largest enlargement in 2020.
00:34 Its headquarters are in Brussels, with its general staff structured into the
00:38 Allied Command Operations in Mons, Belgium,
00:41 and Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk in the United States.
00:46 Today, NATO conducts naval, air and ground operations across the globe.
00:51 Forces are operating in Kosovo and the Mediterranean.
00:55 NATO also undertakes air policing missions at the request of its allies.
01:00 The alliance is based on the principle of collective security for all its members,
01:04 as defined by Article 5, "If one is attacked, all are attacked."
01:09 It was evoked for the first time in 2001,
01:12 after 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States.
