00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 - Welcome to the Carriker Chronicles,
00:09 the people show,
00:11 checking the pulse of a not so thrilled Husker Nation.
00:15 Ladies and gentlemen,
00:16 brought to you by DPS Concrete Construction.
00:18 Check them out at dpsconstruction.net.
00:21 This is probably my least favorite gut reaction
00:26 I've ever done.
00:28 From tough losses to close losses,
00:31 to blowout losses,
00:32 to unfortunate news.
00:34 Obviously the positive,
00:36 the wins that we've had over the years from time to time
00:39 and the positives that we've had.
00:41 This is my least favorite gut reaction
00:43 I think I've ever done.
00:45 This is my gut reaction to Trev Alberts
00:47 taking the job at Texas A&M
00:50 to be their athletic director.
00:52 This is really tough for me
00:57 'cause I in particular had a great relationship with Trev
01:01 and it just makes it even tougher for me.
01:06 I'm not gonna say negative things about him.
01:09 I'm going to openly talk about
01:12 how I'm incredibly surprised.
01:15 Everybody, even people closest to Trev
01:17 are surprised by this.
01:19 And I am disappointed.
01:20 I mean, this is not something anybody saw coming.
01:23 This is incredibly disappointing.
01:25 And part of it is Husker Sports was on the rise
01:28 and doing so good under his watch,
01:31 which makes it even more devastating.
01:33 He's one of the greatest players to ever come through here.
01:35 Makes it more devastating.
01:37 There's a lot of reasons this makes it a lot tougher.
01:41 Not just for me, but for Husker Nation.
01:43 But before we dive into that,
01:45 I thought I got a whole bunch of tweets.
01:48 I got a whole bunch of texts today.
01:51 I got some things I'm gonna read
01:52 and I'm gonna be honest, they're a bit discombobulated.
01:55 That's what a gut reaction's all about, right?
01:56 A lot more raw.
01:58 Okay, this is from @huskeyes.
02:01 There is absolutely nothing else on earth
02:02 like the daily soap opera of Husker Athletics.
02:05 College athletics, but Husker Athletics.
02:07 Just a constant stream of shocking news,
02:09 a revolving door of head coaches, athletic directors,
02:11 presidents and chancellors.
02:13 The only consistent thing is the fans.
02:17 Just complete and total unwavering support
02:20 for the program we love.
02:23 If you agree with that, smash the like button.
02:26 Now, at a certain point in this video,
02:29 I'm gonna talk about, probably towards the end,
02:31 I'm gonna talk about what we're looking for in the future,
02:35 whether it be future coaches,
02:36 our next athletic director, president.
02:40 For me, and if you agree with this,
02:43 I want someone who wants to get in the foxhole with us.
02:45 And I'm not saying anything negative
02:46 about anyone in the past.
02:48 Everybody else can say whatever, that's fine.
02:50 Okay, I want somebody who wants to be
02:52 in the foxhole with us.
02:53 I want somebody who wants to be in the trenches with us.
02:56 I want someone who wants to get down in the dirt
02:58 and the muck and just fight, scratch and claw
03:01 to get Husker football, Husker sports
03:03 back to where they need to be,
03:04 to where they should be as an overall whole to begin with.
03:07 Not a shot at the past, not what this is about,
03:10 as disappointing and tough and as unexcited
03:13 as I am to do this video.
03:14 Just wanna be clear on all that.
03:17 So, speculation as to why.
03:20 Why is this happening?
03:21 Okay, here are five things that kind of occurred to me,
03:26 five potential reasons, okay?
03:29 In no particular order,
03:30 the unsettled search for Ted Carter's replacement,
03:35 our next president.
03:36 This has been going on a long time.
03:38 And I watched a recent interview with Trev,
03:40 where he talked about the challenges
03:42 and he talked about how difficult it is.
03:44 Like there's a lack of overarching leadership right now.
03:49 And you can blame Trev, you can blame whoever you want.
03:53 Ted's at Ohio State, now Trev is going to A&M.
03:56 At some point, there's something going on
03:57 with the leadership that needs to be addressed
03:59 as an overall whole, okay?
04:02 That's number one, okay?
04:05 Easier access to large donors, donor dollars in Texas,
04:10 easier access to NIL dollars at Texas A&M, okay?
04:15 Salary and benefits at Texas A&M that are greater than NU.
04:20 Okay, now all those three things,
04:22 there's a difference between Texas A&M and Nebraska,
04:25 but to me, it's not gargantuan.
04:27 I don't think it's earth shattering.
04:28 I'm not convinced at this moment in time
04:30 with the information I have
04:31 that the money is the difference maker.
04:34 But those are things that were talked about
04:36 between me and other people today.
04:37 They were things that were brought up.
04:39 They're things that you can't just ignore.
04:41 Nebraska has money.
04:42 Nebraska has NIL money.
04:44 Nebraska has donors.
04:45 Nebraska has certain things.
04:47 Maybe you got the oil money down in Texas.
04:49 Maybe you got a few things where they got an edge.
04:52 But for a guy to leave his alma mater,
04:55 a guy to leave a place
04:58 where he's an all-time great and beloved,
05:00 to me, I think personally there's more to it.
05:03 I think there's leadership things
05:05 that need to be addressed.
05:06 Why it's taken so long to get a president,
05:09 a new president, is beyond me.
05:13 The unsettled search for Ted Carter's replacement,
05:15 as I said a minute ago.
05:17 Okay.
05:18 Now, the uncertainty involving
05:22 the women's basketball lawsuit
05:24 and how a potential future boss may react to it.
05:27 And that's something that probably
05:31 needs to be pointed out and brought up,
05:33 which is why I did it.
05:34 Okay.
05:35 So those are five potential factors
05:39 that are a part of this.
05:42 All right, and one individual texted me,
05:44 and I'll just read it.
05:45 He said, "Let's say you work for a company
05:46 "that hasn't had a boss for seven months.
05:48 "You become unsure of the future of the company
05:50 "and tell the owner of the company to hire a boss soon.
05:53 "Or you'll have to go somewhere more stable."
05:55 Now, that's a message that was sent to me.
05:59 Okay.
05:59 Let's see.
06:02 For me, A&M is not in Alabama.
06:05 No disrespect, no disrespect.
06:07 But they're not in Alabama, a Georgia,
06:09 or something like that,
06:11 where you're like, hey, those are the top
06:13 of college football right now.
06:15 To me, this is more of a lateral move,
06:17 and some of the things I pointed out earlier,
06:18 maybe A&M has the advantage,
06:20 but it's not gargantuan in my opinion.
06:22 Okay.
06:24 I do think that there has been maybe some complaints
06:27 along the way about spending half a billion dollars,
06:30 close to, okay, on some of the football projects
06:34 that are going on.
06:36 And in the process, I think there's been challenges
06:40 as far as trying to do maybe more than one job at a time.
06:44 When it comes to Trev, I think there's been frustrations
06:46 from people towards him.
06:48 And then we're taking seats away as well,
06:50 and if the Nebraska football program is doing well,
06:52 I don't think we're ever gonna have a problem
06:53 filling up a stadium.
06:55 Okay.
06:56 Let me look through here, see what more notes I've got.
07:02 I mean, when you look at the money,
07:05 all right, Trev is currently making $1.7 million a year.
07:09 He doubled his salary, okay,
07:12 to increase from 800,000 up to 1.7 million.
07:15 In 2026, it would raise to 2.1 million
07:18 at what I think many had assumed was his dream job.
07:22 Okay.
07:23 That was just 120 days ago.
07:26 It's crazy to think what has happened in the meantime.
07:30 Okay.
07:31 Now, I'm personally trying to remember
07:35 something that's a bigger shock or a bigger surprise
07:39 than something like this.
07:40 I think people were surprised when Mike Riley was hired.
07:46 I don't know if that's of this level.
07:47 Frank Solich being fired
07:49 may be something that's kind of on this level,
07:53 but it's hard to think of something along these lines.
07:56 And it's funny, when I heard the news,
07:58 I was having such a great day.
07:59 I really was.
08:00 I was having such a phenomenal day.
08:02 You know, and I've been talking on shows recently
08:05 about how Nebraska sports is doing so well.
08:07 I posted it on social media.
08:10 It was like it was just too good to be true.
08:12 I mean, like, seriously.
08:14 Okay.
08:15 Now, I do think it's time
08:20 for someone to kind of take the reins
08:23 and take the leadership role a little bit more
08:25 and figure certain things out.
08:27 I'm looking at a picture here,
08:28 and I'm gonna show you the picture.
08:30 Sean Callahan tweeted this.
08:32 "November 28th, 2022."
08:35 15 and a half months ago, not even a year and a half.
08:39 Okay, I hope you can see that picture.
08:41 Three of those four guys are no longer here.
08:43 That's crazy.
08:45 Something needs to be addressed.
08:46 Something needs to be improved.
08:48 Okay.
08:50 And I hate to even bring this up.
08:52 Sometimes by just bringing things up,
08:55 you can speak things into existence,
08:57 but I'm not gonna be the only one to think of this.
09:00 For sure.
09:01 Matt Ruhle came here in large part
09:03 because of Trev Alberts and Ted Carter.
09:05 Matt Ruhle, I firmly believe, he had a rough year one, okay?
09:09 But I firmly believe he's had a really good off season.
09:12 And I firmly believe he's gonna do some really good things
09:14 in year two and year three,
09:15 just like he's done everywhere else he's gone.
09:18 We need stability here.
09:20 We need to find a way to create stability
09:23 for the people who are here,
09:24 for the people we want to come here in the future.
09:27 Okay?
09:28 Whether it's Matt Ruhle,
09:29 whether it's somebody else who's coaching in another sport
09:32 who's doing really good.
09:34 Okay, Matt Ruhle's the first guy who comes to mind.
09:37 All right.
09:40 It's actually a little cleaner than I thought it would be.
09:41 I did skip over a bunch of notes and pictures and text.
09:44 When you're trying to talk and sound coherent,
09:46 those letters get really, really small.
09:48 But you got the gist of kind of what I was looking at,
09:51 what I was thinking here.
09:53 This is incredibly disappointing.
09:55 I got nothing but love from my friend,
10:00 but it's hard for me.
10:02 It really is.
10:03 And we got to figure out things going forward in the future.
10:07 That's on the leadership.
10:08 All right, I got some questions for you fine folks at home.
10:12 Let me know in the comments below.
10:14 As always, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube.
10:19 Okay?
10:21 Candidates for the next AD here
10:22 at the University of Nebraska.
10:24 I had an individual, and I'll say his name,
10:25 Scott Strunk, he owns Husker Hounds.
10:27 Phenomenal dude, go check out his store.
10:28 Free shout out for no reason other than
10:30 I just love the guy.
10:31 Okay.
10:32 He goes, "Cook for our next AD."
10:34 And I'm like, "Cook?
10:36 "Who?"
10:37 And then it clicks, John Cook.
10:39 I was like, "Whoa!"
10:40 Like, mind blown.
10:41 Hadn't even, I was still processing the news,
10:44 and boom.
10:45 What do you guys and gals, everyone at home,
10:47 what do you think about John Cook
10:48 potentially being the next AD here at Nebraska?
10:51 Full-time, interim, whatever the case may be.
10:54 I don't want him to stop coaching volleyball,
10:56 whatever he does, but.
10:57 All right, what about another name?
10:59 Who are some of the other names
11:01 that come to mind when you think about
11:04 the next AD here at the University of Nebraska?
11:06 Adam Carriker?
11:09 I don't know, just throwing it out there.
11:10 All right, and I gotta ask,
11:13 do you blame Alberts for his departure?
11:16 Do you blame leadership?
11:18 Is it a combination?
11:20 Is it something I haven't mentioned?
11:22 There was five main reasons I kinda gave
11:24 earlier on in this video.
11:25 Which of those five reasons stick out to you the most?
11:28 I think it revolves around uncertainty,
11:30 because Alberts is now going to be
11:32 one of the top paid ADs in the SEC,
11:35 and one of the top 10 in the entire country.
11:39 That being said, the top AD in the entire country
11:42 is currently only making about $500,000.
11:44 I don't wanna say only, that's a lot of money.
11:46 But relatively speaking, only $500,000 more
11:50 than what's currently being made.
11:52 All right, until next time, Husker Nation.
11:59 I look forward to more positive gut reactions.
12:01 I look forward to talking about our next AD
12:03 and being excited and being elated.
12:05 I look forward to talking about more positive things
12:08 throughout this offseason with Matt Ruhle.
12:10 I look forward to Nebraska basketball,
12:11 which is what we should be talking about.
12:13 The men's, the women's teams, and the NCAA tournament.
12:16 The wrestling team, which is number three in the country.
12:18 You got the indoor track, men's and women's teams,
12:20 which both just finished in the top 25
12:23 as they finished their season competing at nationals
12:25 up in Boston.
12:28 That's what we should be talking about.
12:30 That's what I wanna talk about.
12:32 Stay tuned in the future.
12:33 Go big red, and always remember to throw the bones.
