00:27 Today is March 12th and it will always be a reminder that miracles happen
00:34 and that there are dreams that come true and that good things are abundant in this world.
00:42 For those of you who don't know me, my name is Elizabeth Smart.
00:46 And back in 2002, I was kidnapped and I was held hostage for nine months,
00:52 but I was rescued on March 12th of 2003.
00:55 So today is 21 years since I was rescued.
01:01 She goes on to say that while life is full of challenges, it's important to see the good in the world.
01:06 I know anniversaries mean a lot of different things for different people
01:11 and I respect whatever it means to everyone individually.
01:16 But for me, it really is a reminder that life is good and that dreams really do come true
01:27 and that we should never ever give up because we all have hard times and we all have struggles,
01:33 but good things do come and I think that's really important.
01:37 I think it's really important to savor the happiness in life and savor the joy in life.
01:42 So no matter where you're at, I hope you find happiness.
01:46 The advocate also takes to Instagram to share moments of joy from her own life
01:50 in a carousel filled with pictures of her family, including her husband and three children.
01:56 She writes, "When I was kidnapped, I thought I'd never finish school, go to college, fall in love, get married, or have a family.
02:04 I thought every dream I had for myself was stolen.
02:07 For me, today is a celebration of all the happy moments of my life and a reminder to never give up."
02:13 In 2002, street preacher Brian David Mitchell kidnapped Elizabeth by knife point from her bedroom at her family's home.
02:20 She spent nine months in captivity before she was rescued in 2003.
02:25 Mitchell was convicted on kidnapping charges and sentenced to life in prison in 2010.
02:30 His wife, Wanda Barzee, was sentenced to 15 years but was released in 2018.
