00:00 The Olympic International Committee has adopted a firmer position on Tuesday regarding Russia,
00:05 which accuses it of politicizing sport by launching its "friendship games" in September,
00:09 a new competition competing in the Olympic Games which also plans a winter edition.
00:14 The organization, based in Lausanne, which authorizes the presence of Russian athletes
00:18 at the next Games in 2024 in Paris only under a neutral banner provided that it does not support
00:22 the Russian invasion of Ukraine, asks the sports world and the governments invited by Moscow
00:27 to reject any participation and any support for this event, it states in a statement.
00:32 Announced for several months, the first edition of the Summer Friendship Games should
00:37 a priori be held in Moscow and Ekaterinburg in September, the CIO recalls, while the
00:42 Winter Friendship Games are scheduled for 2026 in Sochi, which hosted the Games in 2014.
00:47 These two initiatives are added to the Games of the Future organized in Kazan on February 21
00:52 and March 3, mixing traditional and sports disciplines, and to the "Brick Games",
00:57 acronym for the emerging powers around Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa
01:02 , in particular, scheduled in the same city from June 12 to 23, and which should host
01:06 athletes from more than 50 countries, according to Russian authorities.
01:10 Russian cynicism The CIO does not blame the Russians for creating
01:15 multisport competitions outside of their own agenda, since there are already several,
01:19 including Commonwealth Games or the Games of Francophony, but to do so via a very
01:24 supportive diplomatic offensive, through direct contact with "the governments of the whole world".
01:28 In order to make their purely political motivations even more evident, they deliberately
01:33 bypass the sports organizations of their target country, emphasizes the institution, which
01:37 sees a cynical attempt to exploit athletes for political propaganda purposes,
01:42 in violation of the Olympic Charter.
01:43 In addition, the CIO accuses Moscow of a total lack of respect for the world standards of
01:48 the fight against doping and the integrity of competitions, recalling the concerns
01:52 formulated by the World Anti-Doping Agency (AMA) on the subject of friendship games.
01:56 An event devoid of anti-doping programs whose organization in Montreal could have
02:00 attested to the seriousness.
02:01 Russia remains at the heart of the largest institutionalized cheating in recent sporting history,
02:07 which culminated during the 2014 Sochi Olympics and cost the country to see its anthem and its
02:11 official colors banned from the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and then from the Beijing Winter Games
02:16 in 2022.
02:17 Macron wants a truce.
02:18 The CIO and Moscow have been maintaining "ice relations" for years, accusing each other
02:24 of instrumentalizing sport for political purposes, and the particularly dry statement adopted
02:28 on Tuesday in Lausanne diverts the prospect of a short-term rapprochement.
02:32 The Russian government had however seemed to adopt a more conciliatory tone last Wednesday,
02:37 the Minister of Sports Oleg Matitsin estimating that it was not necessary to boycott the Paris
02:41 Games this summer, preferring to preserve the possibility of dialoguing and participating
02:45 in competitions.
02:46 But the CIO had refused to comment on Matitsin's and his boss, Thomas Bach's, questions
02:52 on Saturday, had on the contrary raised statements that are becoming more and more aggressive
02:56 on the part of Russia.
