00:00 Inflation has decreased in the United Kingdom on an annual basis,
00:03 setting at 3.4% in February, after remaining stable at 4% in January,
00:08 according to the monthly report published on Wednesday by the National Office for Statistics (ONS).
00:13 Inflation has sharply declined since its peak at more than 11% at the end of 2022
00:18 and it is now one of the lowest since September 2021, according to ONS.
00:23 The drop is also slightly more marked than the economists' expectations,
00:26 which were 3.5% in February.
00:29 Food prices, which were strong last year, stabilized
00:33 and were the main engine of the inflationary drop last month,
00:36 said ex-Twitterer Grant Fitzner, chief economist at ONS,
00:41 adding that prices in cafes and restaurants have also slowed.
00:45 Prices, fuel, pump and rent increase
00:51 have not only reversed the trend to a decline, he continued.
00:55 These figures are scrutinized by the Bank of England (BOE)
00:58 which must speak out on Thursday on its monetary policy
01:01 and has maintained a high directorial rate of 5.25% for months
01:05 to try to bring inflation back to its 2% target.
01:08 Wednesday's encouraging data show favorable inflation prospects
01:13 and place the central bank in a position to reduce rates from the summer,
01:17 says Yael Selfin, economist at the KPMG UK board of trustees.
01:22 But inflation is still above the target
01:24 and the BOE could therefore, I say, opt for an attentive approach
01:27 while risks persist, like a still tense labor market
01:30 or the red sea disruptions that could lead to a certain resurgence of inflation, according to it.
01:36 The finance minister, Jeremy Hunt, saluted the decline in inflation in a statement
01:41 assuring that it has not only fallen decisively,
01:44 but it should reach the 2% target within a few months,
01:47 which opens the way for the government's ambition to stimulate growth.
01:52 The British economy, which fell into recession at the end of 2023,
01:56 rose again in January with a growth of 0.2% over a month,
02:00 driven by trade and construction.
