00:00 Where do we start? Liam, you've got one together with the team from Game of Thrones.
00:03 Correct.
00:04 Was it easier to understand the pitch or a little bit more difficult?
00:08 Because Benedict's got a whole host of fantastic sci-fis under his belt.
00:11 Bless you, thank you.
00:12 Look, it's always about the storytelling and they are master storytellers who have,
00:18 you know, are also masters of adaptation and they don't make it easy for themselves.
00:24 They, you know, with Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin wrote something because he used to
00:29 write for television and film and stuff and he wrote something that
00:32 he said that budgets weren't going to be a limit on his imagination.
00:38 So we wrote the unfilmable and then the boys went and said we'd like to film this.
00:43 And this has a reputation for being unfilmable as well so they do like a challenge and
00:50 decided to take myself and this young man along with them.
00:56 So how can you turn that down? You've got to challenge yourself.
01:00 But this must have been a walking apart for you because you've got what?
01:02 The Martian, Prometheus, Moon, one of the best sci-fi based movies ever made in my opinion.
01:08 Sunshine.
01:09 Come on guys, stop this.
01:11 People don't know to come to you.
01:13 I've got a tattoo on my back.
01:14 There's nothing left for you to do, you might as well go home.
01:16 I know, taxi ready for me.
01:18 I mean it's fantastic.
01:20 Yeah, I've kind of got a nice dowling stick for sci-fi, everything sci-fi.
01:26 This is kind of a bit more rooted in science within the facts.
01:30 Science faction as I like to call it.
01:33 But yeah, I'm thrilled to be part of this.
01:36 As you said it's sort of multi-layered, the heart is the thriller but yeah,
01:40 it's very sort of genre bending as well.
01:43 You'll have to probably get a lot of questions about Little Green Men,
01:45 what your belief systems are in terms of outer space and such like.
01:50 But if you did have a kind of an open line to this higher being kind of thing,
01:56 what would you want to know from them or what would you want to say?
01:59 Stay away or come here.
02:02 Help us.
02:03 Yeah, for the love of God.
02:05 Help us to get on with each other.
02:06 Yeah, can you help us to get on with each other?
02:10 Because we're not being very successful at the moment.
02:13 Yeah, it's always interesting to ask, you know, we get asked,
02:16 is there life outside from us?
02:19 And just whether the question is posed back where they're looking at the pale blue dot
02:25 and kind of saying, is there intelligent life form there?
02:28 Yeah, that's questionable.
02:30 One of my favourite lines from the first episode,
02:33 I've just seen the two at the moment, was,
02:35 I'll do a more PG version, it's a bad time to be a scientist.
02:40 Which it feels pretty accurate these days.
02:43 We live in a post truth era where people can prove and disprove pretty much everything.
02:48 You believe what you want to believe because there's enough out there
02:50 to prove and disprove any bloody theory you've got.
02:53 Is this a good time to be an actor though?
02:55 In such a kind of strange grey area of a world
03:00 where there's a lot more kind of interesting character arcs to explore?
03:04 Are you guys as terrified and frustrated as the rest of us?
03:08 Well, the way it is at the minute,
03:11 the old cliche of truth is stranger than fiction,
03:13 has never been more true than it is now.
03:16 What's happening in the real world is infinitely more bizarre
03:24 than anything we can put on the screen, which is kind of ironic.
03:29 And finally, what plays a big part in the storyline,
03:33 in this, at least in the episodes I've seen,
03:35 is kind of gaming, or gaming of sorts.
03:39 Waiting to see how that unfurls itself.
03:42 And it makes me wonder, as actors, I guess you pick up a lot of different hobbies over the years,
03:47 sometimes for work, sometimes otherwise.
03:49 What's the last thing you became obsessive about?
03:52 What's the last thing, whether it's a game or something else,
03:54 you lost yourself to a little bit?
03:57 I'm intrinsically linked with FIFA since 1996.
04:05 Ongoing.
04:08 It's now changed to FC24.
04:09 Still call it free for that, don't we?
04:11 Yeah, I know.
04:12 Yeah, I just constantly keep playing Man United, really.
04:16 Me, not gaming.
04:18 My daughter's a video game designer and my son's a huge gamer.
04:21 But motorcycles for me, I've just,
04:25 after 45 years or something, having got my car driving licence,
04:31 I've got my motorcycle licence.
04:33 So I'm touring, tent, bags, the whole lot, on the road, Jack.
04:37 We should see you do one of those Hugh McGregor trips.
04:39 Yeah, come on, it's been done.
04:41 I'll just be in the sidecar.
04:42 I'll do support vehicles.
04:46 That's the sequel that people are looking for, mate.
04:47 I'll have about 200 people with me.
04:50 No.
04:50 I can beam you up at the end.
04:51 Two grumpy bikers.
04:53 Two grumpy b******.
