00:17 Not gonna lie, this was a pretty crazy shoot.

00:22 When the show starts, all sorts of strange things
00:24 have been happening.
00:25 Scientific experiments have been failing.
00:27 Scientists have been killing themselves.
00:30 And some superior power out there
00:32 designs this technology that's far beyond ours
00:35 and sends it to scientists around the world.
00:38 When you put on the helmet,
00:39 you enter this virtual environment.

00:44 The scene that I'm shooting today
00:46 is Jack Rooney's first experience of the game.
00:51 The VR headset is an experience
00:53 no one on Earth has ever had before.
00:55 You can feel it, you can smell it, you can touch it,
00:57 you can taste it.
00:58 All of it, though, has to feel real.
01:00 People get to do extraordinary stuff in this game.
01:02 It has that big scope of history
01:04 where literally anything can happen.
01:06 There's the Shen Dynasty.
01:07 Tudor England.
01:08 16th century Italy.
01:10 Kublai Khan's Mongol pleasure dome, Xanadu.
01:13 It's just great fun as an actor.
01:14 It's wonderful.
01:15 You don't know who the hell you're gonna meet
01:16 when you go in.

01:20 It felt brilliant to punch Thomas More in the face.
01:22 I should do more of it.
01:23 Gotta worry that I'm getting a bit of a taste for it.
01:26 Do you understand how far beyond
01:28 the current state of the art this is?
01:29 For me as a costume designer,
01:31 I wanted to say something about
01:32 the advanced level of technology.
01:34 One of the big challenges
01:36 was grounding all of the disparate visual strands
01:40 of the show.
01:41 I mean, there's a historical element to the show
01:44 and it needs to feel like you're watching history,
01:46 not like you're watching television.
01:48 So we went crazy with the fabrics.
01:50 We had things hand-woven.
01:52 We had embroideries hand-done.
01:55 Custom skins.
01:57 I like it.
01:58 The sun is a very important element in this game.
02:02 So we created this massive LED stage.
02:07 There is hundreds, if not maybe even close to a thousand,
02:10 screens that are creating this environment.
02:13 We have complete control over
02:15 how the sun rises and falls,
02:17 how the light interacts with the people that are in the game.
02:20 In episode three...
02:22 Can I say this?

02:25 In episode three, we get to do an anti-gravity sequence.
02:29 Thirty million Mongol soldiers getting sucked up into the sky.
02:33 You've never seen that before.
02:34 That was our biggest wire sequence on the show.
02:37 Five actors flying.
02:38 [screams]
02:39 We spent like two days on wires flying around.
02:41 It's a creation of a virtual environment,
02:43 something that looks computer simulated,
02:46 but also very organic.
02:48 How do you technically translate that before VFX?
02:52 So we do a pre-vis.
02:53 Wow.
02:54 We look at the performance, look at the camera angle.
02:58 The actors can watch that
02:59 so they know what's going to be happening around them.
03:01 Some superior intelligence is creating something
03:04 that is beyond anything we've experienced before.
03:07 There's the mystery of what this game is actually doing.
03:10 Game or not game, this is what we don't know.
03:12 We don't have this technology.
03:14 Promise me you'll stop playing.
03:16 I think it's going to be visually a feast.
03:20 It's huge.
03:21 It's just literally huge in scope and scale.
03:24 Incredible visuals, incredible world building.
03:27 Feels like nothing else we've ever seen before.
