Government minister Andrew Bowie says the UK needs to be “grown-up and pragmatic” about its relationship with China. The Government is expected to say today that Beijing-linked hackers were behind a cyber-attack on the Electoral Commission, which exposed the personal data of 40 million voters, as well as 43 individuals including MPs and peers. 00:02 about our relationship with China.
00:03 China is one of the biggest economies in the world
00:05 and invest tens of millions of pounds in this country
00:07 every month of the year.
00:09 We need to ensure that where that money is invested,
00:11 it is gone over with a fine-toothed comb
00:13 to ensure there's no hint of any breaches of safety or security
00:18 for this country or for its people.
00:19 But we do so in a way that doesn't deter inward investment
00:22 from around the world.
00:23 So we are doing that.
00:24 And in terms of the cybersecurity of this country,
00:26 I'm sure we'll be finding out more in the course of the day
00:29 as to what the details of the specific cases.
