00:28 Very impressive.
00:29 [Speaking in Arabic]
00:35 And I am glad, I am honored to have such an institution
00:39 with whom I have been in touch regularly.
00:42 I have also participated in some events in the country and abroad.
00:46 In Norway, in one event and in Pakistan as well.
00:49 And you have seen a great package which is done by Akash.
00:53 But we want to know in the next 8-10 minutes
00:55 what is The Citizens Foundation doing?
00:59 In the easiest possible words, we will know what it is doing
01:02 and what can you and I do in it.
01:04 And what can the needy do?
01:06 And what can those who can help, do in what capacity?
01:11 So with us is Syed Asad Ayub Ahmed, who is the President and CEO of The Citizens Foundation.
01:17 Thank you very much.
01:18 How are you?
01:19 Alhamdulillah.
01:20 Thank you for your time. JazakAllah.
01:21 We have met Isfandiyar Inayat many times.
01:24 He is the Vice President and Developer of TCF.
01:26 Thank you very much.
01:28 The institution was established in 1995.
01:31 It is a journey of about 21 years.
01:33 But if I tell you in the easiest possible words,
01:36 that explain to us,
01:38 this institution which is called The Citizens Foundation,
01:41 what is it?
01:42 In what capacity does it help people?
01:45 See, the issue of education in Pakistan is due to two references.
01:50 One is that the children who are out of school,
01:54 unfortunately, more than 2.5 crore children are not going to our school.
02:01 And the children who are going to school,
02:04 the level of education they are getting is not good.
02:08 So TCF was established for this purpose,
02:11 that in the poorest areas, where the most need of education is,
02:15 there should be affordable education.
02:18 If parents can afford 100 rupees,
02:20 they can afford 50 rupees, whatever they can afford.
02:22 In that, whatever our expenditure is,
02:24 and that expenditure is taken by the late generation,
02:29 so they should be given affordable education, which is standard.
02:34 So Alhamdulillah, today 2,86,000 children are studying in our 1921 school units.
02:40 In the whole country.
02:42 And not only in these schools,
02:44 but in the future, colleges and universities will be established.
02:48 So, in all the best universities in Pakistan,
02:51 our children are studying.
02:54 So, from which class to which class does TCF provide education to the children?
02:58 We provide education from KG to Class 10,
03:02 but we support the children further through scholarships.
03:06 Whether they go to intermediate, tertiary, or universities, we support them.
03:11 So, what is the fee structure?
03:14 Is it that the child should be given as much as he can afford?
03:16 Yes, if he is given that much,
03:17 then our expenditure is more than 3,500 rupees per month per child.
03:21 But the average fee for the children is around 200 rupees.
03:25 How much?
03:26 200 rupees.
03:27 And there are those who are giving 50 rupees, 40 rupees,
03:30 and there are those who are giving 300 rupees.
03:32 Alright.
03:33 And what is the criteria?
03:36 Which child will get admission in TCF?
03:39 We try to get the poorest child first.
03:42 In the areas where we are,
03:44 although there are only eligible children,
03:48 but in those areas, the child who deserves the most,
03:52 we try to get him/her admitted first.
03:55 So, to name a few,
03:56 for example, which areas of Karachi,
03:58 so that people have an idea, which areas?
04:00 There is the Machha Colony,
04:02 Ibrahim Ghot, Mulla Issa Ghot,
04:04 Somaar Ghot,
04:05 there is one in the garden,
04:07 there is one in Qayyumabad,
04:09 there is one in Karangi,
04:10 there is one in Landhi.
04:11 Oh nice.
04:12 And across Pakistan?
04:14 Across Pakistan, in all four provinces,
04:17 so extreme south,
04:18 from KT Bandar to north Batalbat Gram,
04:21 west Gawadar,
04:22 east Wagah border,
04:24 and all in between,
04:26 including Azad, Jammu and Kashmir.
04:29 Amazing.
04:30 And how many units are there?
04:31 You said 1921 units.
04:32 1921 school units are in the whole of Pakistan.
04:35 How many children are there?
04:37 2,86,000 children are educated.
04:39 And as Mr. Asif said,
04:41 it is a standard education,
04:43 it is not just education,
04:44 it also includes the element of upbringing.
04:47 And someone asked an old man,
04:49 what is the difference between upbringing and education?
04:53 He said,
04:54 in flour and salt,
04:56 salt should be education,
04:59 and flour should be upbringing.
05:01 So, we also try to put as much emphasis on upbringing,
05:04 so that we can create a good society.
05:07 So, tell us something,
05:09 so that people can understand,
05:10 what level of schools are these?
05:12 For example, if there are teachers,
05:14 trained teachers,
05:15 infrastructure,
05:16 what kind of things are there?
05:17 There is a concept,
05:18 that there is a school,
05:19 which is taking 40, 50 or 200 rupees,
05:22 then the bench will be broken,
05:24 then the fan will not be able to work,
05:25 then the teacher will not come.
05:27 The model is very simple,
05:30 there is no rocket science.
05:31 Number one,
05:32 this is not a poor school for poor children.
05:34 This is my question.
05:35 This beautiful infrastructure,
05:37 which is made according to UNICEF standards,
05:40 there is a library in it,
05:42 there are some rooms in it,
05:44 in the secondary,
05:46 there are science labs,
05:47 computer labs,
05:50 and in the 6th class,
05:52 we have introduced a curriculum,
05:53 which is not yet introduced in many good private schools.
05:59 We are teaching coding,
06:01 AI,
06:03 Artificial Intelligence,
06:05 programming,
06:08 and how to be a responsible digital citizen.
06:11 That is also part of the course.
06:13 So, in education,
06:14 you see in normal life,
06:16 that he is a good person,
06:17 but when digital comes in the world,
06:19 then he becomes something different.
06:20 Then he is not a human being.
06:22 So, we teach that too.
06:24 Secondly, we have 14,000 female faculty.
06:27 So, after the government of Pakistan,
06:30 we are the largest female employers in Pakistan.
06:33 Oh really? In the education sector?
06:35 No.
06:36 But overall?
06:37 Really?
06:38 In any sector.
06:39 Basically, we have 17,000 plus women,
06:41 who are working,
06:42 who have 14,000 faculty and non-faculty.
06:45 Very nice.
06:46 So, we are the biggest employer of women in Pakistan,
06:48 in the private sector.
06:49 Oh, Mashallah.
06:51 This is a big claim.
06:52 It is a big thing that,
06:53 the government has its own infrastructure,
06:55 that after the government,
06:57 in the private sector,
06:58 the biggest employer,
07:00 largest employer,
07:01 in the country,
07:02 in the eyes of women,
07:03 you are saying?
07:04 Yes.
07:05 Ok, great.
07:06 And, please tell me more about the faculty,
07:09 because, obviously,
07:10 the infrastructure has its importance,
07:13 but if the staff is not qualified,
07:15 parents say,
07:16 how qualified is the staff,
07:17 you will teach the children in such a good way,
07:19 and will teach them well.
07:20 So, tell us about this.
07:21 This is such a thing,
07:22 that since the time of the third existence,
07:24 we have always focused a lot on teacher training.
07:27 At present,
07:28 our principals have their own training,
07:30 which is done every year for 12-14 days.
07:33 Every principal is trained on it every year.
07:35 Teachers are trained in pedagogical skills,
07:37 and their own subject knowledge is also trained.
07:40 Apart from this,
07:41 we do a very interesting thing,
07:43 that the subject which the teacher is teaching,
07:46 is also tested on it.
07:48 Oh, I see.
07:49 Because, she herself knows that subject.
07:51 So, Alhamdulillah,
07:52 our teachers have their own subject knowledge,
07:54 and the way of teaching them,
07:56 Alhamdulillah,
07:57 their training is regular.
07:59 And it is the responsibility of our principal,
08:01 that she keeps observing the classes,
08:04 and for their improvement,
08:06 she keeps trying along with them.
08:08 Okay, so how can we request people,
08:10 before I ask you,
08:11 personally, I also have this opinion,
08:13 that it is a very good thing,
08:15 that different institutions are working with different people,
08:18 people should be taken care of in every way,
08:20 because people are so worried.
08:22 So, anyway, what can I say,
08:24 I am not in my position.
08:25 But people are very,
08:26 so if someone is doing something related to dialysis,
08:29 or someone is doing something related to eating,
08:31 everything is very good,
08:32 everything is very commendable.
08:33 But I think,
08:34 this angle,
08:35 is very important,
08:36 because,
08:37 its optics may not be like,
08:39 that in which you have a man,
08:41 standing in a dress,
08:43 and you see a man crying on the road,
08:45 for flour,
08:46 its optics may not be so painful,
08:48 so it may not be that,
08:49 because of that,
08:50 institutions stop appealing.
08:52 Because I think,
08:53 this is the work,
08:54 that if a child is studying,
08:55 2,86,000,
08:56 so actually,
08:57 10,86,000,
08:59 will save us from such situations,
09:02 if 2,86,000 children study and get settled in a good place,
09:05 then their family members will not come on the road,
09:07 will not come on the streets,
09:08 to ask for flour,
09:09 to eat food,
09:10 rather,
09:11 it is possible that,
09:12 these 10,86,000 people,
09:14 make 20,00,000 more capable,
09:16 that they also study on the streets.
09:17 So,
09:18 it is very important to teach,
09:19 how to catch fish,
09:20 education,
09:21 there are many problems,
09:22 education,
09:23 then there is training,
09:24 then there is money,
09:25 then your health problems are less,
09:26 many other problems are less,
09:27 so I think,
09:28 this is very important,
09:29 that we should see this.
09:30 I was saying the same thing,
09:32 I was talking to Adeel also,
09:34 that charities,
09:35 work in two main spheres,
09:36 in two different worlds,
09:38 one is,
09:39 consumptive charities,
09:40 which you were talking about,
09:42 that flour,
09:43 ration,
09:44 in that way,
09:45 there are transformative charities,
09:47 and the transformative charities,
09:49 are not given next month,
09:50 next year,
09:51 or next election,
09:52 they are given to the next generation,
09:54 for 40, 50 years,
09:56 they are being used,
09:57 because,
09:58 when,
09:59 the people,
10:00 get education,
10:01 then,
10:02 I guarantee you,
10:03 like you said,
10:04 that you are looking for people,
10:06 to take Zakat,
10:07 and you will not get people,
10:08 you will be sending Zakat,
10:09 from outside Pakistan,
10:10 but,
10:11 for that,
10:12 you have to force your heart,
10:14 that today,
10:15 if we invest,
10:16 in education,
10:17 then the coming generations,
10:19 will be in a sad state,
10:22 otherwise,
10:23 we will be stuck,
10:24 in this whirlpool,
10:25 rather,
10:26 this whirlpool,
10:27 will get deeper,
10:28 so,
10:29 do we have reasons to believe,
10:31 like we saw a package,
10:32 of Narmin,
10:33 it was very appealing,
10:34 so,
10:35 are there,
10:36 real stories,
10:37 like this,
10:38 that you have seen,
10:39 that you have witnessed,
10:41 there are many real stories,
10:43 like our child,
10:44 Asad,
10:45 who,
10:46 MashaAllah,
10:47 went to study in IBA,
10:48 and studied from there,
10:49 after that,
10:50 he is working in Daraaz,
10:51 and,
10:52 in Daraaz,
10:53 MashaAllah,
10:54 he is a software engineer,
10:55 and,
10:56 earning millions,
10:57 and now,
10:58 to teach in IBA,
10:59 he has joined as a visiting faculty,
11:01 so,
11:02 there are hundreds of such stories,
11:04 rather,
11:05 I will tell you an interesting thing,
11:06 that the advertisement,
11:07 that Narmin Fatima,
11:08 made,
11:09 after seeing this,
11:10 my own granddaughter,
11:11 has decided,
11:12 that she also wants to become a doctor,
11:13 oh, wow,
11:14 really,
11:15 so,
11:16 Alhamdulillah,
11:17 today,
11:18 our child,
11:19 is a doctor,
11:20 and is going to America,
11:21 for higher education,
11:22 lovely,
11:23 the interesting thing is,
11:24 that our 14000 teachers,
11:25 out of that,
11:26 2000 teachers,
11:27 are our own daughters,
11:28 oh,
11:29 who have studied from here,
11:30 after studying from TCF,
11:31 after that,
11:32 they entered,
11:33 and did graduation,
11:34 and now,
11:35 after coming back,
11:36 and contributing in TCF,
11:37 as teachers,
11:38 so,
11:39 sir,
11:40 towards the end,
11:41 can a child,
11:42 or a girl,
11:43 take care of the expenses,
11:44 of the year,
11:45 or,
11:46 what can be the maximum,
11:47 that people can contribute,
11:48 and also,
11:49 if a girl,
11:50 takes responsibility,
11:51 is there any system,
11:52 that they can know,
11:53 on a monthly basis,
11:54 what is the result,
11:55 of the girl,
11:56 what is it,
11:57 yes,
11:58 absolutely,
11:59 if they want,
12:00 they can support a child,
12:01 if they want,
12:02 they can support a classroom,
12:03 if they want,
12:04 they can support a school,
12:05 and all the details,
12:06 are on our website,
12:07 we try,
12:08 that the information,
12:09 of the children,
12:10 is available,
12:11 and,
12:12 we are very sensitive,
12:13 to this,
12:14 and,
12:15 especially,
12:16 regarding the children,
12:17 they don't want,
12:18 that the information,
12:19 of their children,
12:20 should be released,
12:21 so,
12:22 we apologize,
12:23 but if a donor,
12:24 wants to satisfy,
12:25 in any other way,
12:26 then you are available,
12:27 of course,
12:28 we try,
12:29 that you come,
12:30 and visit the school,
12:31 so that,
12:32 you can see,
12:33 what level of education,
12:34 is being given,
12:35 so,
12:36 if we go ahead,
12:37 Alhamdulillah,
12:38 the Shariah,
12:39 is being given,
12:40 so,
12:41 we are very,
12:42 very thankful,
12:43 to you,
12:44 and,
12:45 to the donors,
12:46 who are,
12:47 giving us,
12:48 the support,
12:49 and,
12:50 we are very,
12:51 very thankful,
12:52 to you,
12:53 and,
12:54 to the donors,
12:55 who are,
12:56 giving us,
12:57 the support,
12:58 and,
12:59 we are very,
13:00 very thankful,
13:01 to you,
13:02 and,
13:03 to the donors,
13:04 who are,
13:05 giving us,
13:06 the support,
13:07 and,
13:08 we are very,
13:09 very thankful,
13:10 to you,
13:11 and,
13:12 to the donors,
13:13 who are,
13:14 giving us,
13:15 the support,
13:16 and,
13:17 we are very,
13:18 very thankful,
13:19 to you,
13:20 and,
13:21 to the donors,
13:22 who are,
13:23 giving us,
13:24 the support,
13:25 and,
13:26 we are very,
13:27 very thankful,
13:28 to you,
13:29 and,
13:30 to the donors,
13:31 who are,
13:32 giving us,
13:33 the support,
13:34 and,
13:35 we are very,
13:36 very thankful,
13:37 to you,
13:38 and,
13:39 to the donors,
13:40 who are,
13:41 giving us,
13:42 the support,
13:43 and,
13:44 we are very,
13:45 very thankful,
13:46 to you,
13:47 and,
13:48 to the donors,
13:49 who are,
13:50 giving us,
13:51 the support,
13:52 and,
13:53 we are very,
13:54 very thankful,
13:55 to you,
13:56 and,
13:57 we are very,
13:58 very thankful,
13:59 to you,
14:00 and,
14:01 we are very,
14:02 very thankful,
14:03 to you,
14:04 and,
14:05 we are very,
14:06 very thankful,
14:07 to you,
14:08 and,
14:09 we are very,
14:10 very thankful,
14:11 to you,
14:12 and,
14:13 we are very,
14:14 very thankful,
14:15 to you,
14:16 and,
14:17 we are very,
14:18 very thankful,
14:19 to you,
14:20 and,
14:21 we are very,
14:22 very thankful,
14:23 to you,
14:24 and,
14:25 we are very,
14:26 very thankful,
14:27 to you,
14:28 and,
14:29 we are very,
14:30 very thankful,
14:31 to you,
14:32 and,
14:33 we are very,
14:34 very thankful,
14:35 to you,
14:36 and,
14:37 we are very,
14:38 very thankful,
14:39 to you,
14:40 and,
14:41 we are very,
14:42 very thankful,
14:43 to you,
14:44 and,
14:45 we are very,
14:46 very thankful,
14:47 to you,
14:48 and,
14:49 we are very,
14:50 very thankful,
14:51 to you,
14:52 and,
14:53 we are very,
14:54 very thankful,
14:55 to you,
14:56 and,
14:57 we are very,
14:58 very thankful,
14:59 to you,
15:00 and,
15:01 we are very,
15:02 very thankful,
15:03 to you,
15:04 and,
15:05 we are very,
15:06 very thankful,
15:07 to you,
15:08 and,
15:09 we are very,
15:10 very thankful,
15:11 to you,
15:12 and,
15:13 we are very,
