00:00 Walking, like any form of exercise, is a great way to improve your current wellbeing and future health.
00:07 We don't need a gym membership, we can walk around the block or we can do it in the local park.
00:13 We're very lucky in the United Kingdom that there's lots of protected footpaths which are very enjoyable to walk along.
00:21 It helps to burn up excess calories, it increases oxygenation to the heart, muscles and brain, helps joint health and ultimately reduces the risk of the biggest killers of mankind, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and by improving the immunity, infection.
00:44 The evidence suggests that any amount of walking is beneficial, especially if it avoids sitting.
00:51 The other advantage of walking is you don't really have to set a specific time.
00:55 You can integrate it into the activities of daily living, such as walking your children to school, maybe getting off a bus one stop earlier or walking to the shops rather than driving.
01:05 That said, many people enjoy the warmth and comfort of a gym where you can set a treadmill at your own pace or even increase the intensity with a step climber.
01:18 Many people like to set a target using a pedometer which counts the number of steps, with 10,000 being the usual goal.
