00:00 Ava Mendez is opening up about why she stepped away from acting.
00:04 In an interview with the Today Show, the actress revealed that she and longtime partner Ryan
00:07 Gosling had an unspoken understanding that Ava would prioritize raising their two daughters
00:12 while he continued starring in projects.
00:14 It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, "Okay, he's gonna work,
00:20 and I'm gonna work.
00:21 I'm just gonna work here."
00:22 Ava shared about how she went from acting to being a full-time mom, and clarified that
00:27 she simply updated her job duties.
00:29 It was like a no-brainer.
00:30 I'm so lucky, and I was like, "If I can have this time with my children."
00:36 And I still worked, I just didn't act, because acting takes you on locations, it takes you
00:40 away.
00:41 The 50-year-old went on to gush over Ryan's work ethic, including the effort he put into
00:45 his now-iconic "I'm Just Ken" Oscars performance.
00:48 The way he works, his commitment to his craft, how he wants to make everything as best as
00:53 it can be, and that means making his co-stars as best as they can be.
00:58 But unfortunately, or fortunately, there's only one Ryan.
01:01 So I pretty much stopped acting after that.
01:04 He went and he did his job.
01:07 He just happens to be really good at his job.
01:10 And he did and he came home.
01:12 And actually, you posted on Instagram, you're like, "Hey, great performance, now come home
01:16 'cause it's bedtime."
01:17 Yeah, because that's what it's about.
01:19 You go, you do your job the best you can, and then you come home.
01:23 Back in July, Access Hollywood spoke with Ryan and co-star Margot Robbie ahead of the
01:27 release of Barbie, in which the actor revealed that his and Ava's daughters helped coach
01:31 him through some of the film's scenes.
01:33 And now I gotta ask, the kids, have they watched?
01:35 They're a little young for this, but will they eventually watch?
01:38 Are you getting cool points?
01:39 They know you're in the film.
01:41 Yeah, they do know I'm in the film.
01:43 They've been so supportive.
01:45 I crib so many things from them that they do and put it in the film.
01:50 There's also, if you saw the film, there's a part at the end that I had to rehearse a
01:55 lot for.
01:56 Oh, big time.
01:57 And they were at home, so they knew it better than I did, and they came to set when I did
02:00 it, and they were off camera coaching me.
02:03 Really?
02:04 Yeah.
02:05 Well, job well done.
02:06 They're incredible coaches.
02:07 You did your thing.
02:08 Thank you.
02:09 I'll tell them.
02:09 Thank you.
02:14 (upbeat music)
02:17 you
