King Charles recorded a powerful message for the Royal Maundy Service praising people who “extend the hand of friendship, especially in a time of need”. It is the King’s first public words since the Princess of Wales revealed that she was undergoing chemotherapy. Charles also apologised for not being able to attend Worcester Cathedral with his wife Queen Camilla. Report by Bangurak. 00:00 Ladies and gentlemen, it is for me a great sadness that I cannot be with you all today.
00:05 The Monde de Cervis has a very special place in my heart.
00:10 It has its origin in the life of our Lord, who knelt before his disciples and, to their great surprise,
00:18 washed their travel-weary feet.
00:20 And as we have just heard, in doing so, he deliberately gave to them and to us all
00:28 an example of how we should serve and care for each other.
00:32 In this country, we are blessed by all the different services that exist for our welfare.
00:39 But over and above these organisations and their selfless staff,
00:44 we need and benefit greatly from those who extend the hand of friendship to us,
00:51 especially in a time of need.
00:55 The 150 men and women who have been chosen today to receive the Monde de Cervis money from my wife
01:01 are wonderful examples of such kindness,
01:05 of going way beyond the call of duty and of giving so much of their lives to the service of others in their communities.
01:14 This act of worship here in Worcester Cathedral
01:19 reminds me of the pledge I made at the beginning of the coronation service
01:25 to follow Christ's example, not to be served but to serve.
01:30 That I have always tried to do and continue to do with my whole heart.
01:37 It is my special prayer today
01:41 that our Lord's example of serving one another might continue to inspire us and to strengthen all our communities.
01:49 May God bless you all this Easter.
