00:00 - Where you from, man? - I'm going to receive
00:01 the instructions in the dressing room,
00:02 know what I expect, good, clean fight.
00:05 Legal punches, here for you.
00:06 Legal punches, either a bit high, here for you.
00:08 Touch gloves, luck to both of you.
00:10 (crowd cheering)
00:13 - Emiliano Fernando Vargas comes from the strong lineage
00:18 of Mexican warriors, beginning with his father,
00:21 Fernando El Feroz Vargas,
00:23 and then the two older brothers,
00:27 Fernando Jr. and Amado,
00:30 to call him Papas when he was a kid back in the day.
00:33 He's in against Nelson Hampton, though.
00:35 We just saw what Alan Garcia was capable of doing.
00:39 Well, guess what?
00:40 Hampton went the distance with him
00:42 in October of last year,
00:44 so Hampton is no slouch in there, Tim,
00:46 and he's gonna put Emiliano Vargas to the test.
00:49 - Boxing is about being able to deal
00:53 with, of course, the pressure
00:54 that come along with boxing and fighting
00:56 under the bright lights,
00:58 but it also has a lot to do with dealing with styles.
01:01 - Yes, sir.
01:02 - You know, we've seen Emiliano
01:04 fight against guys that will try to bully him,
01:07 get underneath him and pressure him.
01:09 Tonight, he's facing a guy
01:11 that fights well off his back foot,
01:13 and he's going to have to be the hunter tonight.
01:15 - Emiliano said, "Look, I expect at some point
01:20 "Hampton's gonna use his legs and try to run
01:22 "and make this a boring fight.
01:23 "My job is to cut off the ring,
01:26 "chase him down," and that's easier said than done,
01:28 but when you got kicks like that, Tim, prone,
01:31 that might help a little bit.
01:32 - (laughs) No, prone.
01:33 He do got some prone.
01:34 They look like some 10s, don't they?
01:35 (laughs)
01:37 - Put some spinners on that.
01:38 - And he keep 'em clean, too, boy.
01:40 (laughs)
01:41 Man.
01:42 You know, patience, patience tonight.
01:45 Sometimes, most of the time with the young prospects,
01:48 they don't have much time to work.
01:51 They either have six rounds, four rounds, six rounds.
01:54 This is six rounds right here.
01:56 However, what happens is they rush things.
01:59 You start to rush things.
02:00 You start to make mistakes,
02:01 and then you have guys like veterans like this
02:03 that end up make you pay when you try to rush things
02:06 and get ahead of yourself,
02:07 so his patience gonna be tested tonight,
02:10 especially if Hampton stays around
02:13 for a little bit too long for his liking.
02:16 - That was a little bit low from Emiliano
02:17 down on the belt line of Hampton,
02:20 but so far, so good in keeping Hampton in front of him
02:24 because he's cutting off the ring.
02:25 - That's why, because he knows how to cut off the ring,
02:29 and Hampton hasn't really got on his bike.
02:31 He's steadily standing in front,
02:33 but he's not doing much offensively,
02:35 and if he doesn't do much offensively,
02:37 Emiliano's gonna continue to run straight through.
02:40 - And we talked about Emiliano
02:41 preparing to cut off the ring,
02:42 but Nelson Hampton spent five weeks out in Mexico City
02:46 fighting opponents who fight like Emiliano Vazquez,
02:49 getting prepared for this particular fight.
02:51 - Watch your head, it's Greal gonna cut himself.
02:52 - See the right hand of Vargas landing
02:53 and making Hampton miss.
02:55 - Nice shot over the top.
02:57 But see, but good defense.
02:58 That's what you're gonna see.
02:59 See, Hampton, he's gonna stay defensively sound.
03:01 He's not gonna allow you to land something flush on him.
03:04 You know, Emiliano's gonna have to keep setting up,
03:06 setting things up, and then he got comfortable right there
03:08 because he was having too much success.
03:09 - That's a nice--
03:10 - And he got caught with that right hand,
03:12 and those are mistakes I'm talking about
03:13 that a veteran like Hampton's gonna be looking
03:15 to take advantage of.
03:16 - And he did that earlier with a short left hook
03:18 and then a counter right hand,
03:20 so he's making Emiliano Vargas think
03:22 about what he's gonna do after he throws his punches.
03:27 First round in the books here in Glendale, Arizona.
03:30 We'll listen to El Feroz.
03:31 - Bring it up ahead.
03:32 - Fernando Vargas.
03:34 - Make charge in the corner of his son, Emiliano.
03:37 El General Fernando Vargas Jr.
03:39 [speaking Spanish]
03:42 - Watch out for that nose.
03:46 We'll talk about that right now.
03:48 This is how I want you to work.
03:50 I need you to be first.
03:51 I need you to measure first.
03:53 - Listen.
03:56 Watch it.
03:57 - I just want you to measure, measure,
04:01 and then land those uppers.
04:03 Keep that left hand up.
04:07 I don't want you to get countered with that right.
04:09 - Let's look at this right hand lands for Vargas right here.
04:11 You see him trying to catch.
04:12 You see the nice little level change right there,
04:14 and then he comes right up with that right hand,
04:17 bagging up Hampton against that ropes,
04:19 and a nice follow-up right there,
04:20 but a lot of clean punches landed right here.
04:22 You see Hampton taking advantage.
04:25 Straight through the guard right there.
04:27 Now that was a clean punch right there,
04:28 going straight through the guard.
04:29 I tell you guys all the time,
04:30 when the guy uses a high guard,
04:32 you can come around it,
04:33 various, you know, come around it,
04:34 you can come in between it,
04:35 but you can also power through it,
04:36 and that point right there,
04:37 that's what you saw from Emiliano Vargas.
04:39 He powered straight through it with the right hand.
04:41 - In our fighter meeting,
04:42 Emiliano Vargas came in and said,
04:44 "Guys, I may start bleeding from the nose early."
04:47 - Last night, I started just bleeding
04:50 because it's so dry out here in the desert.
04:52 Don't think I'm getting beat up,
04:53 I'm bleeding because I'm hurt.
04:55 No, it's gonna happen.
04:57 Chill.
04:58 - Yeah, the dry weather,
05:01 different weather, different altitude,
05:02 different climate does that.
05:04 Definitely does that.
05:05 When you get to altitude, sometimes that happens as well.
05:09 - Nice one-two combination.
05:10 Now putting three together is Emiliano Vargas.
05:13 - But if you watch that sequence right there,
05:15 you saw a forward shift from Emiliano Vargas,
05:17 bringing his back leg forward,
05:19 fighting from the southpaw stance
05:20 and punching from a different angle.
05:22 - How about the body work here from Emiliano in round two?
05:25 - See, but what I like about what Emiliano's doing,
05:27 he's in the right gear right now.
05:30 You know, he's not, he's conserving,
05:32 he's not going too fast or too slow.
05:35 Perfect, and he's constantly putting that pressure on Hampton.
05:38 - And he's switching it up, Tim.
05:39 One of the things that young fighters do
05:41 is become predictable.
05:42 Vargas switching it up.
05:43 He'll catch you downstairs first, go upstairs.
05:46 Now he goes with the uppercut and then downstairs.
05:48 And that's something that is natural for him
05:51 as you see him go southpaw momentarily.
05:52 - Yes.
05:54 He has a full punch arsenal.
05:55 He, you know, he can do it all.
05:57 You see him digging down, switching it up,
05:58 coming up with the uppercut upstairs
06:00 and trying to come around those elbows to the left foot.
06:02 But you know, Hampton, again, he's not going to allow you.
06:05 He's going to, he's more in the survival mode.
06:07 That's the way Hampton fights.
06:08 That's the reason why he went the distance
06:10 with Garcia, who we just saw.
06:18 - So fighters, you have two options.
06:21 Either you're going to fight to win
06:22 or you're going to fight to survive.
06:24 He actually has three.
06:24 Or you can do a little bit of both.
06:26 'Cause sometimes you need to know how to survive as well
06:27 if you're getting hurt.
06:29 Right now, Hampton right now is in survival mode right now.
06:33 He's here to survive.
06:35 He's okay with going the distance.
06:36 - Oh, shot to the back of the head
06:38 is what Hampton was calling for.
06:40 Lost his balance momentarily and Vargas jumped on him
06:43 as he was looking for help from the referee.
06:45 - If Vargas continued to land
06:47 this amount of pressure on Hampton,
06:49 you know, he's trying to get him to force him out that door.
06:51 He's trying to get him to quit.
06:52 He's trying to make him fold under all of this pressure.
06:57 Hampton, every now and then,
06:58 he'll try to sneak something in between,
06:59 but you know, it's too far and in between.
07:01 He's not doing enough work.
07:03 Not doing enough to deter young Vargas.
07:06 - Yeah, his nickname is Hot Hands,
07:07 but he can get those hot hands warmed up here
07:10 because if not, Emiliano Vargas is going to run him over.
07:12 - Yes, he is.
07:15 - Nice.
07:16 What a nice setup for Vargas for that body shot.
07:19 - And he waited for it.
07:20 - Yes.
07:21 - He waited for it.
07:22 So, mid-range again.
07:23 Mid-range again.
07:25 The thing with mid-range is that
07:27 you either be first or you be second.
07:29 And right there at that time,
07:30 he decided to be second,
07:32 made a miss and made him pay.
07:33 - Look for that bell.
07:34 [bell dings]
07:37 - All right, two rounds in the book.
07:38 Let's listen in to the corners.
07:40 Just keep pushing him backwards.
07:43 I need you to move your waist and head.
07:45 Side to side.
07:48 I want you to keep touching him.
07:56 Keep your hands up, touch him,
07:59 and then dig to the body,
08:01 and then pick him up with an uppercut.
08:02 He's ready to go, man.
08:06 - Boy, you're gonna fucking hurt him.
08:08 Take his confidence away.
08:10 Walk to him.
08:11 Walk to him, all right?
08:12 Walk to him.
08:13 I need you to walk to him.
08:15 - Oh my, my clothes.
08:19 My clothes are in the way.
08:21 [whistle blows]
08:27 - Give me some uppercuts, okay?
08:28 Give me some uppercuts.
08:30 Stay back, Emiliano.
08:30 Stay back.
08:31 - Nelson Hampton's been working
08:32 with his trainer, Camille Sanchez,
08:33 for almost two years now.
08:35 And speaking of years,
08:36 Emiliano Vargas is only 19 years old.
08:39 This is his ninth professional fight,
08:42 and he turns 20 on April 16th.
08:46 The sky's the limit for this kid.
08:48 - Yes, it is.
08:49 You know, he's a phenomenal talent,
08:50 but there's no rush.
08:51 There's no rush.
08:52 I mean, I understand your dad,
08:54 you know, he did this highest level
08:56 game championship material very early in his career,
08:59 but man, like, take your time.
09:01 Build yourself.
09:02 Build your brand.
09:03 So when you get on top,
09:05 now you got the arena field up.
09:07 - You know, his father said,
09:09 I'm gonna learn from my mistakes.
09:10 I'm not gonna move myself faster.
09:12 - Wow, both fighters land simultaneously.
09:15 - That overhand right.
09:16 That overhand right was nasty right there.
09:18 And that's the second right hand that's hit Vargas flush.
09:22 What you heard in Hampton's corner was,
09:25 was that they wanted to change the psychology
09:27 of this fight right now.
09:28 And what it is,
09:29 is that Emiliano is having success
09:32 and he's coming forward and he's not backing up.
09:36 You know, and he feels confidence.
09:37 And they want him to walk forward.
09:40 Go to him, change the way he was thinking,
09:42 put some pressure on him.
09:44 And that overhand right,
09:45 that was told for him in the corner to throw.
09:47 And it actually landed and worked.
09:50 - It happened over by the ropes,
09:51 not the center of the ring.
09:53 - Well, the lead hand of Emiliano is down.
09:55 So he'll shoot the jab out.
09:57 He'll bring it back down low.
09:58 And then when he's shooting the opposite hand,
10:00 right there, he shoots the right hand.
10:01 He drops the lead hand.
10:03 - That's a chance for a counter level from Nelson Hampton.
10:06 - And that's the reason why it's happening.
10:09 - Well, Vardiga's going downstairs once again.
10:11 And now Hampton goes downstairs with a left hook of his own.
10:14 Ooh, nice uppercut there.
10:32 - Nice punch in between.
10:33 Just changing levels,
10:34 using upper body movement.
10:37 - But Hampton is getting in this fight here
10:39 in the third round.
10:40 When he lets his hands go, Tim?
10:41 - Well, he needs to.
10:42 I mean, it's round three.
10:44 He lost the first two rounds.
10:45 He needs to get back to getting in this fight.
10:47 He only got six rounds to go.
10:48 - He's at that tempo.
10:52 - Low blow call there from referee Raul Cais Jr.
10:55 - Just keep him up.
10:56 Here we go, ready?
10:57 - Cross not having it.
10:58 - Box.
10:59 - Let's take a look, Tim.
11:03 Low or no?
11:04 - Let's check it out.
11:07 Ooh, yeah, that's low.
11:08 See, the belt line will be safe.
11:10 If it was on the belt line, that's safe.
11:11 That's a bit low right there.
11:12 - That left hook is good by Emiliano.
11:16 Sets up the one-two over the top.
11:18 You see a lot more respect from Hampton
11:27 for Emiliano's power than he had against Alan Sanchez.
11:30 - Yes.
11:32 - And it's because of his defense.
11:36 He doesn't want to get caught flush with him.
11:38 - Time!
11:39 - We're halfway through this scheduled six round,
11:42 and we'll listen in once again to El Feroz.
11:44 Hey, let's test him now as a southpaw.
11:47 Let's see how he goes.
11:48 How you feeling, good?
11:49 Clean him up.
11:53 Things are going well.
11:56 Just keep doing what you're doing.
11:58 Look good, look pretty.
12:00 Move your waist.
12:00 Now we're gonna fight southpaw.
12:04 Southpaw.
12:05 Let's see what we can do with him.
12:08 I need you smart, and I need you alert.
12:10 - See how Emiliano was able to set up this right hand.
12:13 Just coming around with the left hook.
12:15 That was it.
12:17 The left hook was able to set it up
12:18 and just coming right down the middle,
12:20 positioned himself for that shot.
12:21 But this is where he gets caught.
12:23 See him shooting that right hand?
12:26 Where's his head?
12:27 His head is directly in the center,
12:28 and his lead hand is down.
12:31 So he gets caught right there.
12:33 See, when you throw a right hand to the body,
12:35 you don't want your head directly in the center.
12:37 You gotta get your head off the line a little bit.
12:39 Hold that phone and dig down to the body.
12:42 - There was also a slight headbutt there
12:43 that doesn't negate the negative things he was doing,
12:48 the wrong things fundamentally that he was doing
12:50 that allowed Nelson Hampton to connect on that lead.
12:53 Right now, a straight right hand from Emiliano Vargas
12:56 and a left hook that sends Nelson Hampton
12:58 reeling up against the ropes.
13:00 And you can see the power shots of Vargas
13:02 having an effect as Hampton buckles once again.
13:05 - It's the speed and the snap of those shots
13:08 that has Hampton scared right here.
13:11 Has him very timid.
13:12 The speed, the accuracy.
13:14 - And the punch variety.
13:17 - Yes.
13:18 - Doesn't know if it's coming downstairs or over the top,
13:20 but all he knows is if it lands, it's gonna hurt.
13:22 - And what I mean by hold the phone is,
13:24 just hold your hand up.
13:27 When you shoot one shot,
13:28 you gotta hold the opposite hand up.
13:30 Keeping your hand up, the opposite hand,
13:33 that's not being fired up.
13:34 - That's a nice one.
13:35 - Yes it is.
13:36 But the hook right hand is gonna be the money.
13:38 The hook and right hand is gonna be the money shot.
13:42 - See him switch southpaw.
13:42 - Oh, he switched southpaw.
13:43 See, now he's showing his variation in skill.
13:45 The fact that he can do things from both sides.
13:48 Similar to someone of a Crawford.
13:50 Not on that level, however, you get what I'm saying.
13:53 - Yes, but he hadn't been listening to his daddy.
13:55 He was in the orthodox stance.
13:56 And then as soon as he switched southpaw,
13:58 you saw exactly how effective he was
14:00 against Nelson Hampton here in the fourth round.
14:03 Hampton's hands are in his pocket.
14:07 Not throwing those because he's watching out
14:10 for what Emiliano comes with.
14:11 - He's afraid of what's coming back at him.
14:13 That's what it is.
14:14 He's afraid.
14:15 See, but it would serve him if he needs to fire back.
14:20 He has to fire back.
14:22 - Watch behind the head there, Nelson.
14:22 - Hampton, or this onslaught's gonna continue.
14:25 - Yeah, well, Emiliano's not gonna stop throwing to him.
14:27 - No, he's not.
14:28 - He's gonna get yours.
14:29 - Yeah, absolutely.
14:30 - If you're Nelson Hampton.
14:31 - See, and this is the down, now Emiliano,
14:35 now he's resting.
14:36 Now let's see if Hampton, if he notices it,
14:38 that's where the IQ come in at.
14:40 That push and pull.
14:41 When your guy steps back and tries to get a little breath,
14:44 you gotta step on the gas.
14:46 Hampton's still coming forward,
14:47 but he's being extremely cautious.
14:49 He doesn't wanna run into any traps.
14:51 - Like that? - Set by, yes.
14:53 - Straight left.
14:56 Emiliano's quick with it.
14:58 - Well, he's doing a little bit of everything tonight.
15:01 He, you know, he's walking forward,
15:02 he's controlling the space in between,
15:04 he's using his jab.
15:05 Again, variety of punches he's landed.
15:10 Good uppercuts, right hand,
15:13 that hook right hand has been money for him.
15:15 - He turned a hook into a straight jab to the body.
15:21 Hampton doesn't know where it's coming from.
15:25 He's doing a great job of disguising
15:27 what he's gonna do next.
15:28 And now you see a straight right,
15:30 a quick one-two combination
15:32 from Emiliano Fernando and General Vargas.
15:35 - Yes.
15:37 And the tempo is a fast tempo.
15:40 I mean, it's not a slow tempo.
15:42 He's thinking quickly in there.
15:45 And that also has Hampton spooked.
15:48 - And he's executing. - Yes, yes he is.
15:50 - Let's take a look at what's working for Emiliano here.
15:53 - Look at Stan Lowe right here.
15:54 Coming up with the hook right hand.
15:55 I told you that shot right there is money.
15:58 Getting Hampton as he's bagging out, trying to get away.
16:01 Then what he does, he steps offline,
16:02 moves his head right,
16:04 comes right down the middle with the left hand.
16:07 Just tons of variation.
16:08 Then a lead right hand,
16:10 catching Hampton as he's moving to the left,
16:13 trying to get away.
16:14 Just beautiful work by the young man.
16:16 He's reading the body and the body language of Hampton.
16:20 And what's crazy to me is that
16:23 he didn't have an extensive amateur pedigree.
16:26 You know what I mean?
16:27 But he got the cheat code
16:28 because he has his father as a champion.
16:31 And he's been in there.
16:33 And he believes everything his father was saying
16:35 because he was successful.
16:37 So that's what he has going for him as well.
16:39 - 115 and 10 and 125 amateur bounce for Emiliano Vargas,
16:44 el general, who's taking control here
16:47 but over the first four rounds.
16:49 - But it wasn't no Olympics.
16:52 - Well, 'cause he was too young, Tim.
16:53 He turned pro at 18.
16:54 He wasn't yet at the elite and full amateur level.
16:59 He was doing it at the lower levels of youth and cadet.
17:04 - Well, I know that a lot of the young guys now,
17:06 they're not waiting around for the Olympics.
17:08 So they're turning pro.
17:09 I mean, those million dollar signing bonuses
17:11 for the Olympic gold medal is no longer.
17:13 You know, that's an old boy.
17:15 So, you know, I appreciate it.
17:18 I appreciate the fact that he turned pro early.
17:19 He's building himself up.
17:21 And it's great to see the maturation that, you know,
17:24 process and how he goes through
17:26 and dealing with different styles and different opponents
17:28 and just watching his body, looking at his back.
17:30 You know, from the first time I saw him
17:31 and then now looking at his back now,
17:33 put a lot of muscle on that back,
17:37 which is gonna help with that power.
17:38 - You see the misdirection that he's using here
17:40 against Nelson Hampton.
17:41 He knew he was a tricky defensive fighter.
17:43 So he's breaking him down, punch by punch.
17:45 And you talked about the million dollar signing bonus
17:47 is not being available to gold medalists.
17:50 Well, it's because the last gold medalist
17:52 happened to be our buddy Andre Ward in 2004.
17:57 - Yeah, but I think it was the last one
17:59 that kind of stopped that was Ricardo Williams.
18:02 - Oh yeah.
18:03 - Because he was a dud, you know,
18:05 and he was a phenomenal amateur.
18:07 And I think that's what killed the business.
18:10 - You see a nice combination from Emiliano Vargas
18:14 continuing to walk down Nelson Hampton,
18:16 who's looking for one shot to stop
18:19 Emiliano in his tracks.
18:20 - He's doing a little bit of everything.
18:22 Right now he's just working on stuff.
18:23 - Yeah.
18:24 - He's working on different things in there
18:26 that he's been working on in the gym, which is good.
18:28 He's getting the rounds in, which is great as well.
18:30 He's dealing with a little bit of resistance here and there,
18:32 but he has a guy that is in survival mode.
18:36 It's hard to stop a fighter
18:38 when all he wants to do is survive.
18:46 - You know, Emiliano was clear as you see Hampton
18:49 looking over and laughing at the crowd.
18:52 Actually, he's having a conversation
18:55 with the brother of Emiliano, Fernando Jr.
18:59 - Did you hear the ref say, don't listen to the crowd?
19:03 Told him, gave him a little knowledge.
19:04 Hey man, don't listen to the crowd.
19:06 Like, focus on your opponent.
19:11 (crowd cheering)
19:14 - Again, that concentration.
19:20 Staying to the plan.
19:23 Staying the course.
19:24 Staying consistent.
19:26 Emiliano gotta continue to do that.
19:28 We wanna see if he can still keep that level of intensity
19:31 throughout these last couple of rounds.
19:33 - 10 seconds, step at the bell.
19:35 - In tonight's main event, we'll see Liam Wilson,
19:37 who when he was younger, he made a promise to his father
19:41 on his deathbed that he hopes to fulfill.
19:43 - I had a loving father and mother.
19:47 Obviously, they had their issues.
19:50 You know, my dad was on his own.
19:51 He struggled with his own demons there.
19:53 Kinda reverted to drinking.
19:54 - He did some time after a crazy car chase.
19:58 - I remember my mother and father
19:59 had an argument on the phone.
20:01 Police car was coming up the driveway.
20:03 My dad got me, my brother, and my sister
20:05 and put us in the car.
20:07 And we were in a police chase for about three hours.
20:10 We're going through people's backyard.
20:11 - Police chase?
20:12 - Yeah, yeah.
20:13 I remember my brother was in the front seat.
20:15 He was grabbing beer cans out of the carton
20:16 and throwing the cop cars behind us.
20:18 - Your dad was ill for a while.
20:20 - His body was shutting down from alcohol.
20:22 I was 15 years old and he'd been in hospital for two weeks.
20:25 The nurses come in and said,
20:27 "Look, we're gonna have to turn the machines off.
20:29 You can go on now and say your last words to him
20:31 before he passes away."
20:33 I could go on there now and say,
20:35 "Goodbye, dad, I love you, give you a cuddle."
20:37 You know, I mean, I promised him.
20:39 That's the first thing that comes to my mind,
20:41 was to be a world champion for him.
20:43 - You're gonna touch gloves.
20:43 Touch gloves, guys, last round.
20:44 - His father, Kevin John, is always on his mind,
20:48 especially when an opportunity to become a champion happens.
20:52 And that's exactly what you'll see tonight
20:54 in our main event.
20:55 Liam Wilson taking on Oscar Valdez
20:58 for the now vacant WBO junior lightweight interim title.
21:04 - Sixth and final round of Vargas and Hampton here, Tim.
21:07 What do you anticipate?
21:08 - Oh, look, look, look, Hampton's corner.
21:10 I watched this trainer jump in the ring,
21:12 grab him by the face.
21:13 They're frustrated with him.
21:15 They're saying, "Man, you're not doing anything
21:17 that we've worked on."
21:18 You know, you gotta understand your trainer's sacrifice
21:20 just as much as you.
21:21 Take off work, you know, on a day-to-day life.
21:23 They're at the gym with you, they're running with you,
21:25 they're making sure you're doing all the right things.
21:27 And then you get in the ring and you do this?
21:29 That's disappointing to a trainer.
21:31 And Hampton's okay with that.
21:34 - Yeah, you mentioned it early on.
21:35 Hampton is in survival mode.
21:37 - Yes.
21:38 - And there's different ways of surviving,
21:39 but this is the way he's choosing.
21:41 He's not running, but keeping his hands up
21:45 is how he's doing it.
21:46 - That's fine, you can keep your hands up
21:48 and he has experience and so on and so forth,
21:50 but he is not fighting back.
21:52 That's what I'm talking about.
21:53 Fight back.
21:54 Better your chances of winning.
21:56 - Better, man.
21:59 Give yourself a chance to win.
22:01 - Give yourself a win, yeah.
22:02 I mean, you can, but I'm just saying,
22:03 a punch that a fighter doesn't see,
22:05 the overhead, see that overhead right?
22:06 That time, a nice adjustment right there.
22:09 Looked like it was a cross parry.
22:11 - And it's been there for him all night, Tim.
22:13 - It has, but--
22:14 - But you have to make yourself vulnerable to throw it.
22:17 - But Emiliano just made that adjustment
22:19 and came across and blocked it with his right hand.
22:22 - Straight shot to the body right on the borderline,
22:27 once again.
22:27 - With lateral movement,
22:32 you gotta deal with a lot when you're fighting a fighter
22:35 with this much skill and this much ability.
22:37 - And the power when he throws that right
22:40 from the southpaw stance,
22:41 he just stopped Hampton in his tracks with Emiliano.
22:45 - Yeah, Emiliano slowed down a bit.
22:47 Taking a little bit off right now,
22:49 and now you're seeing Hampton come on.
22:52 And this is what Hampton should have been doing
22:54 two rounds ago.
22:55 That's what he should have been doing.
22:57 And then he does this as soon as Emiliano says,
22:59 "Okay, I've recovered enough.
23:00 "Now I'm coming to get you."
23:02 And now, referee Raul Calles Jr. said,
23:04 "Show me something."
23:06 And if Emiliano presses the gas here,
23:08 he can't get a stoppage against Nelson Hampton,
23:10 who's done very little in this fight.
23:13 - Look, I like when refs are vocal
23:15 and they let you know what their intentions are.
23:16 I like that.
23:18 That's great mechanics right there from Raul Junior.
23:21 Look.
23:27 (crowd shouting)
23:29 - Wait a minute, Tim, did you pause?
23:35 - No, I'm just looking.
23:36 I'm just looking.
23:36 - You're not checking something about him.
23:38 - No, I'm just checking it out, man.
23:40 I'm just looking.
23:41 Oh, nice counter.
23:43 - Listen for that bell.
23:44 Time!
23:45 Good job, guys.
23:46 - Nice counter left foot right there.
23:47 - After six rounds.
23:49 - That was good.
23:50 That's good for him.
23:50 This is good.
23:51 You know, this works your stamina too.
23:54 Works your stamina, works your mentality.
23:56 You as a fighter, you know a little bit more about yourself
23:59 when you're going the distance like this with six rounds.
24:02 This is good.
24:04 - This is only the second time that Emiliano
24:06 goes the distance as a professional.
24:08 Let's take a look at what worked for him tonight.
24:11 - Everything.
24:12 Anything he wanted to do.
24:13 I mean, he dominated from the opening bell
24:14 and it all started with the Chris jab.
24:16 Once he got his jab going,
24:18 then you know, the combinations would follow.
24:19 Great variation.
24:20 He was pretty much doing whatever he wanted.
24:22 It was easy.
24:23 He didn't have a guy that was giving him
24:24 any kind of resistance.
24:25 A guy that was here to survive from the round one.
24:28 And I saw it from round one.
24:31 He landed a big bomb and Hampton landed a big bomb,
24:33 but that was it.
24:34 Big right hand, never wanted to follow up with it.
24:37 But I like what I saw right now from Emiliano Vargas.
24:40 I like the fact that he went the distance
24:43 because you can get accustomed to just getting knockouts.
24:45 And you don't want this problem to come up
24:49 when you get a knockout after knockout
24:51 and you're getting used to knockouts
24:52 and you think that every fighter that you touch
24:54 is gonna fall.
24:55 And then you're gonna get in there
24:56 and it's gonna start getting tough for you.
24:58 And the fighter doesn't go anywhere.
25:01 Then you get surprised.
25:02 Then you get discouraged.
25:03 You're like, yo, what's going on?
25:04 I'm hitting him with everything,
25:05 but he's not going anywhere.
25:06 And you gotta know what to do when that happens.
25:08 You gotta know how to box.
25:11 You understand that?
25:12 So tonight he showed us that he can box
25:14 and he can deal with a fighter like Hampton.
25:17 - You wanna know something interesting about Emiliano Vargas?
25:20 - What?
25:21 - Both times he's fought in Glendale, Arizona.
25:23 The first fight of the year in February, 2022.
25:26 And now in March of 2023, he's gone the distance.
25:29 Let's send it up to Mark Chinook
25:31 for the official particulars.
25:33 - Ladies and gentlemen, here inside Desert Diamond Arena.
25:36 After six rounds, we go to the judges' scorecards
25:39 for the official decision.
25:40 Esther Lopez, Dennis O'Connell, and Robin Taylor
25:45 all have the bout 60 to 54.
25:48 In favor of your winner by unanimous decision,
25:52 El General Emiliano Fernando Vargas.
25:57 - In order not to be shut out, you have to do something.
26:01 Nelson Hampton did very little of that.
26:04 So it's a 60-54 shutout victory for Emiliano Vargas
26:08 who gets his ninth professional win
26:11 and continue his climb here at Lightweight.
26:14 We send it up to our very own Mark Kregel
26:17 with a man who made the trip all the way from Australia.
