00:25 Right, BismillahirRahmanirRahim.
00:27 This is our segment on Nikkah. And daily we are with such individuals or institutions
00:33 who are working for the sake of humanity.
00:37 And today such an institution is with us.
00:38 Will you tell us more about it?
00:40 Yes, of course. As you always say, there are such things that many institutions are doing.
00:44 But there are some departments in which a few institutions are working.
00:47 They are doing a great job.
00:48 Such an institution, Deaf Reach, is present with us today.
00:52 And you will be surprised to know that there are about 10 lakh such children in Pakistan
00:57 who cannot hear. And when they cannot hear, they cannot speak.
01:01 And only 5% of them are able to go to school.
01:05 This is a very unfortunate thing.
01:07 That is, they are not able to join the central branch of Pakistan,
01:11 despite all their abilities.
01:13 So Deaf Reach is trying to provide them with the facility of pick and drop from home.
01:18 About 8 schools are working in Pakistan at the moment.
01:23 And Richard Gehry, who laid the foundation for this in 1998,
01:28 obviously there are many people who had no connection with Pakistan,
01:31 whether it is Dr. Ruth Fou, or we talk about Aidaz Viji.
01:35 So such an institution.
01:36 With us today is Mr. Zohaib Faizi.
01:38 You are the director of Deaf Reach and the regional manager.
01:42 Ms. Mehreen Abrar, you have already been on the set.
01:45 Thank you so very much.
01:46 Thank you very much for coming.
01:47 So this is a matter that we do not hear much about in the society.
01:53 Unfortunately, there is not much talk about it.
01:56 First tell me, how are the children who are deprived of hearing ability,
02:01 how are they traveling in Pakistan?
02:04 And what is the potential if they are brought towards education,
02:08 like there are colleges, schools, training centers for Deaf Reach.
02:12 So what role can they play in society?
02:14 First of all, you have asked a very good question,
02:17 how can we bring the children who are deprived of hearing ability into society?
02:23 See, the child who is born Deaf in any house,
02:27 our society unfortunately feels that it is a liability.
02:31 But Deaf Reach is doing the same thing,
02:35 that we have to change this thought and not take it as a liability,
02:38 because mentally it is not disabled.
02:40 It can understand everything, it can do everything.
02:43 So Deaf Reach, as you said, picks up the children from school and brings them to school.
02:49 And it is a whole process.
02:51 So if we calculate the service of pick and drop in a year,
02:55 it is 20 lakh kilometers to bring the children and take them there.
03:00 The service provided.
03:01 Because we cover a radius of 50 to 60 kilometers,
03:05 and we have 8 campuses in different cities all over Pakistan.
03:09 So if you multiply it, it becomes this much.
03:12 I was saying that when a child comes and gets education,
03:15 after that we work on his job placement.
03:17 And in more than 100 institutions, our children have studied
03:22 and now they have worked on job placements.
03:24 So the child who is considered a liability when he is born,
03:28 and when he starts working, he becomes an asset and becomes a breadwinner of the family.
03:33 So this has been proven by Deaf Reach's continuous work over the years,
03:39 that these children can do anything.
03:41 They just speak a different language.
03:43 You can think that if a French-speaking child is born in my house,
03:47 or a Spanish-speaking child,
03:48 then it is not the child's fault, I should know the language.
03:50 If he doesn't know the language.
03:51 So we work on sign language.
03:53 And sign language is also trained in institutions.
03:56 And then the institutions accept the children.
03:58 And then, Alhamdulillah, this is our work which is increasing over the years.
04:03 And Richard, as you said, he was an American national,
04:07 born in America, his own child was Deaf.
04:10 Okay.
04:11 And he was travelling all over the world.
04:14 He saw that there was no work in Pakistan for Deaf.
04:16 So he decided to settle in Pakistan and create this service.
04:21 He left everything behind.
04:22 Yes.
04:23 From 1998 onwards.
04:24 From 1998 till now, he has been doing this work.
04:27 And Alhamdulillah, this network is increasing.
04:29 And now we have many partners with us.
04:32 And Alhamdulillah, this work has been blessed.
04:34 Amazing.
04:34 Zindabad.
04:35 Mr. Paneel, thank you very much.
04:37 Tell us, has this awareness improved over the years?
04:40 Because we know of some families where parents are deprived of hearing and speaking.
04:44 But ultimately, the children have learned to communicate with them.
04:48 Of course, when you are spending time, you learn.
04:52 But it is a formal sign language.
04:53 So is this awareness of people increasing?
04:56 Is this awareness coming to people that we...
04:58 Alhamdulillah, this awareness is also increasing.
05:01 And there is a big heart of Deafreach in this.
05:03 And basically, as you mentioned, 5% of children are taking education.
05:10 And obviously, Deafreach is a donation-based organization.
05:13 And obviously, it cannot open a parent school everywhere.
05:16 So currently, Deafreach is...
05:18 Our target is to expand education as much as possible in 2024.
05:26 So it is difficult to open schools everywhere.
05:29 So we are opening satellite schools in collaboration.
05:32 We will provide training there.
05:33 We will provide facilities.
05:35 So satellite schools are meant to be training from a central desk in different schools.
05:42 Yes, we have 8 campuses in 5 different cities of Sindh, 2 in Punjab.
05:46 So our parents' schools and all the schools on their land...
05:50 ...where Deaf schools are already government schools or private schools are running...
05:54 ...they don't know exactly how to educate the Deaf kid.
05:57 So we will train our trained teachers there and provide them with curriculum.
06:04 We are working on a digital learning program.
06:07 So we are developing a curriculum overall.
06:10 On the basis of that curriculum, you can use the curriculum from the free of cost website.
06:15 And then our teachers will train them.
06:17 So we are expanding the education system.
06:19 And this awareness is through the parents' training program.
06:22 So now, Mashallah, we have so many children...
06:24 ...who have improved in sign language and have also improved in parents' language.
06:30 But further, they are supporting their parents.
06:33 The parents were thinking that we have a liability on them.
06:36 Today, their hearing children have left them.
06:39 So a child whose life is completely unachievable...
06:44 ...that he can't speak or hear, that means he is not only a useless person in the society...
06:49 ...but a burden on everyone.
06:50 If that child gets trained, gets good education...
06:57 ...then he can become the most capable person.
06:59 Allah has given him more abilities than others.
07:03 I was watching you and I was also interested...
07:05 ...that your body language is more than necessary...
07:08 ...because you are a sign language expert.
07:11 In fact, he also demonstrated that our children came.
07:14 So tell us, is this an easy task?
07:19 Can all these things be done?
07:21 Is there anything that you can't do in sign language?
07:22 This is very easy language.
07:24 If we want to understand it as a language...
07:27 ...I always tell everyone that we understand it as a language.
07:32 Let me ask you a question, how do you drink tea?
07:35 How do you drink tea?
07:37 I don't drink tea.
07:39 I drink tea and they drink tea.
07:41 This is a sign of tea.
07:42 How does a cold drink open?
07:43 This is a sign of a cold drink.
07:44 How do you drink water?
07:45 Our daily actions are basically the creation of signs.
07:50 So it's not difficult for us.
07:51 From cooking to eating, everything is a sign.
07:54 If you are a hearing person and you want to communicate...
07:58 ...then the signs you do are the sign language creations.
08:01 But the only thing is that your movements should be correct...
08:05 ...and you should be able to communicate.
08:07 We need to learn this, Haseeb.
08:09 It's very beneficial.
08:10 And this is not only for the deaf, it's very good for the hearing.
08:13 In the sense that you are at an event...
08:16 ...and you want to talk to each other, you send someone.
08:20 We are standing far away and communicating with each other...
08:22 ...and the hearing people are communicating with each other.
08:24 You are even on the set.
08:25 What do you suggest that society as a whole should learn...
08:30 ...and communicate with each other in offices, schools, colleges...
08:35 ...where children can't hear and speak?
08:37 Basically, we prefer that all the organizations and schools...
08:42 ...should make this a part of their training.
08:46 Because obviously, there are job placements...
08:50 ...that deaf people are getting, but deaf are capable.
08:53 But because you are not able to work, you are not able to talk...
08:56 ...then you say that they are not skillful.
08:58 Basically, they are skillful.
08:59 So DeafReach is giving training everywhere.
09:02 It is giving training to children in schools...
09:04 ...where they offer this.
09:06 So we are working at a very big level.
09:09 Just briefly, please tell us, Mr. Kifri...
09:11 ...what are the success stories, what kind of work...
09:14 ...are these children able to do better?
09:16 And again, those who want to join this group...
09:19 ...how do you help them?
09:20 If you could give them a message.
09:21 Look, we have many success stories.
09:23 As I said, right now, children are working in more than 100 institutions.
09:27 And we have employed more than 2500 children...
09:30 ...who have graduated from us.
09:32 We had some children who were very bright students.
09:38 And they have graduated from DeafReach.
09:41 And they are now getting education in American School for the Deaf...
09:45 ...in a school in New York.
09:49 Similarly, we have many children whose parents brought them up...
09:54 ...at a young age and they were very disappointed with their parents.
09:57 How will we live with them now?
09:59 But today, those children are standing on their own feet...
10:02 ...and are supporting their families.
10:04 So, like you asked the second question...
10:06 ...how can people move forward and support them?
10:08 Look, there are two or three ways.
10:10 One is on an individual basis...
10:12 ...because our network of schools is running totally free.
10:15 And we run it on donations and Zakat.
10:19 So, all your details are on the screen.
10:22 And if you want to support us, call us.
10:24 And in monetary terms, even a volunteer can support us.
10:28 Secondly, we are in touch with the institutions.
10:33 And we appeal to the institutions...
10:35 ...that the Deaf children who have graduated from us...
10:38 ...should be given a chance to get a job.
10:43 They should get a chance to prove themselves.
10:46 And in fact, there is resistance in the beginning.
10:48 But I can tell you that the institutions we have worked with...
10:51 ...and when they placed the children in the beginning...
10:55 ...they hired us double or triple next year.
10:59 The reason is that they say that when a Deaf child comes to us...
11:02 ...he doesn't waste time in talking.
11:05 Secondly, he doesn't do politics.
11:08 And he does the work with focus.
11:11 So, the efficiency increases a lot.
11:13 Especially in the factories, where monotonous work is done...
11:17 ...and there is no work that needs to be taught a lot.
11:21 So, the efficiency level of the Deaf children is very high there.
11:24 So, this is how we bring them to us.
11:27 Thank you very much.
11:29 I would like to request that...
11:31 ...as Bikram said in the beginning...
11:33 ...all the institutions that are working...
11:35 ...everyone is doing it with a good heart.
11:37 And unfortunately, the society we live in...
11:40 ...no matter what field we take a step in...
11:42 ...whether it is food, or anything else...
11:44 ...there is a huge gap, and it is good to do that.
11:46 It is serving the people.
11:47 But we have one opinion.
11:49 We should take a step forward and support those institutions...
11:53 ...which are looking in that direction...
11:55 ...where people's attention is not given.
11:57 I am not a small figure to tell you that...
11:59 ...if there are 10 lakh children...
12:01 ...who are deaf and unable to hear and speak...
12:04 ...then it is okay if we don't help them...
12:07 ...they are just wasting their time...
12:09 ...but their quality of life is zero.
12:11 Now, think about a child like this...
12:13 ...a person who has thought about this...
12:15 ...that I just have to waste my time...
12:17 ...and one day I will leave this world.
12:19 If you give him this message...
12:21 ...that life is still left and you can come back to life...
12:24 ...then how big a reward is this?
12:26 Let's move forward with this thought.
12:28 I am very happy that people are responding to this.
12:32 Yesterday, when he came...
12:34 ...we made a request...
12:36 ...and you know our brother Masood...
12:39 ...he sent me a message...
12:41 ...that he is promising me with two hands.
12:43 -More than 1 million.
12:44 -More than 1 million.
12:45 I am very thankful that you are responding to this.
12:48 So, this is the appeal that we have come to you today...
12:51 ...and we hope that you will respond.
12:53 Sir, thank you very much once again.
12:55 Thank you very much.
12:56 And let's leave with a lot of blessings and applause.
12:59 And we will take a break.
13:02 Thank you so much.
13:04 [Applause]
13:07 [Music]
13:16 [Music]
13:22 you
