00:00 The Congolese presidency announced a new Prime Minister on Monday evening,
00:03 finally installing a government leader after Congo's President Felix Tshisekedi
00:07 was inaugurated for his second term in January. Judith Suminwa is due to lead the new government,
00:13 and she becomes the first woman to ever hold the post of Prime Minister in the Democratic
00:17 Republic of Congo. Suminwa was a minister in the previous government, which was led by
00:21 Sama Lukonde. She also previously worked in banking and with the United Nations Development
00:26 Programme. Her appointment marks an important step forward for women in the Democratic Republic of
00:31 Congo, who have long been underrepresented at the highest levels of both business and politics.
00:36 Suminwa is due to form a new government in the coming weeks, and it's going to have its work
00:41 cut out for it. Not only is there a conflict raging in the east with M23 rebels who are backed by
00:46 Rwanda, but Congo also has to contend with weak institutions, rampant corruption, inflation,
00:52 and a lack of jobs. Speaking to the press on Monday, Suminwa said the challenges are immense,
00:57 but that with everyone's support, the government will succeed.
