00:04 These are your high school course selection sheets.
00:08 Students, choose wisely.
00:11 The poor decisions you make today will haunt you forever.
00:15 >> The last week of the last year of junior high.
00:18 >> We get to pick our own classes, I'm doing music.
00:20 >> Theater arts, a whole class of just acting.
00:24 I love high school.
00:26 >> I'm just gonna take all the burnout classes.
00:28 >> Well, mech, check, shop, check, gym, double check.
00:32 >> Well, isn't that too bad?
00:35 I'm sure you'll all miss each other.
00:36 >> How do you mean?
00:38 >> You've all been in the same class since the seventh grade, but
00:41 the high school is made up of theater schools from all over town.
00:44 And if you're picking different subjects,
00:46 well, you may never see each other again.
00:50 >> We were about to be mixed up, like bingo balls in a tumbler.
00:53 This wasn't the start of something, it was the end of everything.
00:57 >> I can't wait to get out of this hole.
00:58 >> Don't count your chickens.
01:00 Your mathematics examination is tomorrow.
01:02 And study up this time, mister.
01:04 You should be in grade 11 by now.
01:07 >> He's gonna pass.
01:08 >> I hope so.
01:09 Trust me, I don't want either of you in my class again.
01:12 [SOUND]
01:16 >> Mr. Gritch, a moment please.
01:19 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:22 I'm afraid you're the class valedictorian.
01:25 >> You mean I got the best grades?
01:27 >> Calm down, Einstein.
01:29 You beat Tina by 3%.
01:31 You're the best of a bad lot.
01:33 But you'll have to make a speech.
01:35 And you've got the gift to gab, at least.
01:37 >> I'm honored, sister.
01:39 I think I'll start off with like a little joke.
01:41 Maybe do my what if Mr. T was Canadian bit.
01:44 Mr. A, spelt E-H, from the A team, spelt E-H.
01:48 >> You'll do no such thing.
01:50 The archbishop will be there.
01:52 Just say what you've learned.
01:54 I'll be approving your every word.
01:56 >> I will not be censored.
01:58 Lenny Bruce went to jail for the comedians.
01:59 >> Valedictorians can't fail.
02:02 Do the speech my way, and I'll push you through,
02:05 no matter how badly you flunk the math exam.
02:07 >> Pleasure doing business with you, sister.
02:11 [MUSIC]
02:14 >> I racked my brain to think of something, anything I had learned in school.
02:18 >> Look at you, reading the paper.
02:20 >> I'm just checking out the real estate ads.
02:22 >> Why are you looking at real estate ads?
02:24 >> I just wanted to see what's going on.
02:28 >> Are you moving out?
02:29 Can I have your room?
02:31 >> What do you want to take his room for?
02:32 >> Nobody's moving out.
02:34 You work next door.
02:35 What would you want to move out for?
02:37 >> Well, I was just thinking with Linda and the baby and all,
02:41 I could probably use the space, right?
02:43 >> I didn't know what I learned in school, but
02:45 my brother never learned when to shut up.
02:47 >> We don't want you wasting your hard earned money on rent.
02:50 >> You guys are okay with her staying here then?
02:52 >> God no, we don't want a baby ball in the house spouting off her pop.
02:55 >> And where am I gonna go?
02:56 You wanna put me into a home?
02:58 >> We're not gonna put you in a home.
03:00 We can't afford it.
03:00 >> Look, Mike, if you do decide to move out, I'll support you.
03:04 Not financially, but you know.
03:06 >> Thanks, Dad.
03:08 [MUSIC]
03:12 >> What?
03:12 >> Looks like you're gonna be the one looking for a place to live.
03:15 [MUSIC]
03:17 >> You will have 20 minutes to finish your exam, children.
03:21 >> Give it.
03:22 >> I suggest you use your time wisely.
03:25 [MUSIC]
03:30 >> Pass it.
03:31 >> No.
03:31 >> Pass it.
03:32 >> I'll be taking that, Missy.
03:33 [MUSIC]
03:36 Wouldn't want you tempted.
03:37 One last thing to confiscate before you walk off into obscurity.
03:43 A souvenir, if you will.
03:46 And you, move your desk up here next to mine.
03:49 [MUSIC]
03:59 >> It was impossible.
04:13 Fox's brother had finished ahead of everyone with five minutes to spare.
04:18 >> Pencils down.
04:19 Mr. Critch, kindly collect the papers.
04:22 [MUSIC]
04:26 >> Her tutoring had paid off.
04:28 Fox's brother was.
04:30 [MUSIC]
04:31 >> You didn't finish.
04:32 >> I was the first finished.
04:34 >> You didn't do the back.
04:35 >> Nobody said to flip it over.
04:37 >> Nimrod, you gotta let him finish.
04:41 >> I do not.
04:42 >> That's not fair.
04:44 >> Life isn't fair, Missy.
04:46 >> And besides, if it's even Steven you're after,
04:48 it wouldn't be fair to the other students if I gave your brother extra time.
04:51 >> We have to stay together, sister.
04:53 >> I'm sure you will.
04:54 There's already one of you in jail, and I'm sure the rest are soon to follow.
04:58 >> Why do you have to be so mean?
05:00 [MUSIC]
05:03 >> Fox was right.
05:04 It wasn't fair.
05:05 And Sister Rose was also right.
05:07 Neither was life.
05:08 >> And in entertainment news, officials announced that August will see the largest
05:12 concert in Newfoundland history when revisited by popular entertainer,
05:17 Rodney Stewart.
05:18 Now here's Dick Dunphy with the trap.
05:21 >> Mike?
05:22 >> Yes? >> Yeah?
05:22 >> Mr. Murphy approved your request.
05:26 >> Cool.
05:27 Thanks, Gertie.
05:29 >> What request?
05:30 >> He asked to move into the basement apartment.
05:33 >> Of our house.
05:34 >> It's a company house.
05:35 >> That'll do, Gertie.
05:36 >> Why'd you go over my head like that?
05:39 >> Dad, you know I need my own space.
05:40 >> You do or Linda does?
05:43 >> It's the same thing.
05:44 >> That's so sweet.
05:45 I should go check the switchboard.
05:49 >> Dad, I'm not even really moving out.
05:54 I'm moving under.
05:56 >> You're moving too fast.
05:57 >> Dad, I need to make my own way.
06:00 I don't wanna be living with my parents for the rest of my life.
06:02 >> I did.
06:03 >> You said I had your support.
06:05 >> You did.
06:06 You do.
06:08 >> Mrs. Loggins, we're doing what's best for you.
06:10 She's what's best for me.
06:13 [MUSIC]
06:22 >> So how's the speech coming along, Mr. Churchill?
06:25 >> Terrible.
06:26 >> Well, the cat's never got your tongue before.
06:28 >> It's just, I don't know what Sister Rose wants me to say.
06:31 >> Well, no wonder you can't write it.
06:37 It's got to come from the heart.
06:39 >> Right, let me see it.
06:41 What a scribble.
06:43 Here, we come here as children, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
06:49 An education rooted in faith.
06:52 Suck up.
06:54 We chose to go to high school not because it's easy, but because it's hard.
07:03 >> Paraphrasing Kennedy.
07:07 >> Yeah?
07:08 >> You know they shock Kennedy.
07:10 >> Don't.
07:11 >> All right.
07:16 What's the first thing that comes into your head when you think of that school?
07:22 >> My friends.
07:25 >> What about them?
07:25 >> How I'm not gonna see them much anymore.
07:29 And how I'll miss them.
07:31 >> So write a speech about that.
07:35 >> Sister Rose said it had to be about something I learned.
07:38 >> So what?
07:39 Look, if you've learned something from your friends, and say that.
07:44 >> The school wants me to.
07:45 >> The school is a factory.
07:48 You'll learn way more outside of its walls than you ever will inside of them.
07:54 I mean, you already have.
07:56 You're a young man now.
08:02 >> Far too big to be sharing a room with an old man.
08:06 >> That's not true.
08:07 If I learned anything from anyone, it was from you.
08:11 >> You don't want your own room?
08:14 I mean, isn't that a bit weird?
08:15 >> Well, I am the only kid who shares a room with his grandfather.
08:21 But I wouldn't want it any other way.
08:26 Honest.
08:27 [MUSIC]
08:37 >> Night, Pop.
08:45 >> Good night.
08:46 [SOUND] Lord, I need to pee.
08:51 [SOUND]
08:52 [MUSIC]
09:02 >> I love my classes.
09:04 I've got a crazy teacher.
09:05 He wears dark glasses.
09:07 Things are going great, and they're only getting better.
09:11 [MUSIC]
09:13 Yeah, I'm doing all right.
09:14 I'm getting good grades.
09:16 The future's so bright.
09:18 I gotta wear shades.
09:20 [MUSIC]
09:21 I gotta wear shades.
09:24 Shades, shades, shades, shades, shades.
09:26 Welcome to the class of 89 spiritual retreat.
09:30 Okay, who's got a dream that they're gonna make come true?
09:33 >> I wanna be a comedian.
09:35 >> Okay, cool.
09:36 Not the most realistic though, right?
09:40 Advertising is a good career, okay?
09:43 Who else has a dream?
09:44 >> I wanna be a musician.
09:45 >> I hear music teacher.
09:48 Fox, how about you?
09:50 >> I don't care.
09:51 >> No dreams?
09:53 No regrets.
09:53 I love it.
09:54 Yes, very cool.
09:56 All right, let's break into groups.
09:59 Trust exercises.
10:00 You're all gonna bond so hard right now.
10:03 This is gonna be great.
10:04 Now, you're gonna take turns falling back into each other's arms.
10:09 Just give into it.
10:10 [MUSIC]
10:13 >> You trust me?
10:15 >> Not at all.
10:16 >> Don't worry, I got you.
10:17 [MUSIC]
10:19 And fall.
10:20 [LAUGH]
10:25 >> You said that I could trust you.
10:26 >> You can't trust someone just cuz they say you can, idiot.
10:30 >> He's not wrong.
10:31 Are you okay?
10:32 >> I'm fine.
10:33 I- >> You gave him a concussion.
10:34 I better take him to the fountain to get some water.
10:38 >> No, I hope he doesn't sue.
10:40 >> Come on.
10:40 >> Guess I should sit down.
10:44 >> Suck it up, boss.
10:45 I got somewhere to be.
10:46 [MUSIC]
10:52 >> Mike, you shouldn't have her carrying stuff.
10:55 The doctor said moving around would make it come faster.
10:57 >> You don't want it coming until you got somewhere to put it.
11:00 >> And you can bring the baby here whenever you want.
11:03 >> Mrs. Cridge, what was it like when Mike came?
11:08 >> I called Mike's father at the station and
11:10 he said he couldn't come because he was on the air.
11:14 So he sent Dick to drive me to the hospital.
11:18 >> Dick Dunphy.
11:18 >> It was a different time.
11:19 >> Well, you know what?
11:21 I'm gonna be there.
11:23 >> [MUSIC]
11:28 >> Ow, ow.
11:30 >> And a- >> No, no.
11:34 >> Mike, run up and get my keys.
11:36 >> Is it, is it?
11:36 >> Don't let Dick Dunphy take me, sweet freak.
11:40 [MUSIC]
11:51 >> Aye, half done, half wit.
11:56 [MUSIC]
12:20 >> Eh, what the hell?
12:22 [MUSIC]
12:26 Pass. [LAUGH] This place looks kinda pretty at night.
12:32 [MUSIC]
12:39 Go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
12:41 Hurry, quick.
12:42 Okay.
12:43 [MUSIC]
12:53 >> If I hadn't been a coward, I could have kissed her.
12:57 We always remember the chances we didn't take.
13:01 >> Okay, come on.
13:01 Fox, just, something I wanna do before you blow this pop stand.
13:07 >> Where'd you get those?
13:08 >> They're the priest's.
13:09 Took them off him when you were bouncing your head off the floor.
13:11 [MUSIC]
13:15 >> You're gonna get us expelled.
13:16 [MUSIC]
13:18 >> Just breathe.
13:20 I'm scared.
13:21 >> Hey, hey, it's okay, you're doing great.
13:23 You're doing just great.
13:24 >> Hang on a minute.
13:27 Are you family?
13:28 [MUSIC]
13:31 >> Yes.
13:32 [MUSIC]
13:34 >> Come on.
13:35 [MUSIC]
13:39 >> Don't do that.
13:40 >> I need to get something.
13:42 >> What do you possibly want in there?
13:43 >> Three years worth of stuff she confiscated.
13:46 [MUSIC]
13:49 >> You can't take that.
13:50 >> She took it from me.
13:51 It's mine.
13:52 [MUSIC]
13:54 And this is Richie's.
13:56 It's not fair that she took it.
13:57 >> Temmie, please go now.
13:59 >> I'm gonna tell Adel that exactly what I think of her.
14:01 [MUSIC]
14:02 >> I think I'm gonna pass out.
14:03 [MUSIC]
14:08 >> There's one more place I wanna go.
14:10 [MUSIC]
14:13 >> My God.
14:13 [MUSIC]
14:18 [BLANK_AUDIO]
14:20 [LAUGH]
14:24 >> She's perfect, just like you.
14:27 [SOUND]
14:32 >> Hey.
14:36 What do you want?
14:37 >> Can I help you?
14:39 >> I'm Jeff.
14:41 I'm the- >> Father.
14:44 >> I see.
14:48 So who are you?
14:52 >> I'm just a boyfriend.
14:57 >> Out.
14:59 Family only.
15:01 >> I think it's up to Linda who that is.
15:03 >> It's okay.
15:13 >> He's gotten all right.
15:28 >> He has every right.
15:30 >> It's not up to you.
15:31 >> It's not up to you either.
15:34 It's up to Linda.
15:35 >> How could she let him in there?
15:38 He doesn't get to just walk back now and-
15:41 >> One day, you are gonna be a wonderful father.
15:50 And maybe that's today, maybe not.
15:52 But whenever that day comes, and whoever that child is,
15:59 is gonna be the luckiest kid in the world.
16:04 [MUSIC]
16:14 >> We're not supposed to be up here.
16:22 >> Which is exactly why we should be up here.
16:25 [MUSIC]
16:33 >> Someone's gonna hear that.
16:35 >> Marth, chill out.
16:36 No one else is here.
16:38 Hello?
16:41 >> Stop.
16:42 >> You try.
16:43 >> No way.
16:45 >> Do it.
16:47 >> Hello?
16:51 >> You're gonna be up there tomorrow.
16:56 Figure out what you're gonna say yet?
16:58 >> No.
17:00 >> You'll figure something out.
17:03 You always do.
17:05 >> Not like you, though.
17:09 Watching how you held everything together with your mom and your brother,
17:14 it's really something.
17:17 >> At least someone noticed.
17:20 [MUSIC]
17:23 >> I can't believe it's almost over.
17:25 >> You still got high school.
17:28 It's just beginning, Fox.
17:32 >> Call me Jennifer.
17:34 [MUSIC]
17:41 >> So, what was it that you wanted to do up here that was so important anyway?
17:49 >> Yes.
17:52 [MUSIC]
18:02 >> The most important thing I learned at St. Bridget's was a lesson in love.
18:06 [MUSIC]
18:11 >> Look, I'm so proud of you.
18:13 >> Oh, the E.
18:14 >> Thanks.
18:15 >> Showtime.
18:16 I knew what Sister Rose wanted me to say, but I still didn't know what I wanted to say.
18:21 I was about to give a speech, and I was speechless.
18:24 >> And now, to bring greetings from the class of 1989,
18:29 valedictorian Mark Critch.
18:32 [APPLAUSE]
18:40 >> Archbishop, Bishop, Father, Sisters,
18:45 Parents, Teachers, and Pupils,
18:48 we did it.
18:49 We all did it.
18:51 We learned a lot at St. Bridget's.
18:53 [MUSIC]
19:09 >> But the most important things, we didn't learn in class.
19:13 They didn't come from books or teachers.
19:16 They came from our families and our friends.
19:22 Everyone in this room taught me something,
19:25 like how to be different, to be yourself,
19:27 or to never back down and not let anyone put you in a box.
19:32 That it's okay to sometimes bend the rules a little,
19:36 or even to break them,
19:38 and to stand by the people you love,
19:40 because they'd stand by you.
19:42 And if someone's a bully,
19:44 probably because they're more scared than you are,
19:47 so don't judge a book by its cover,
19:49 or none by her habit.
19:51 [LAUGHTER]
19:53 Sorry, Sister.
19:56 There wasn't a day that went by these last three years
19:59 that I didn't wish that I could leave this place
20:03 and never come back.
20:04 But now the time to leave has come.
20:07 I kind of wish we could start all over.
20:11 But we can't, so...
20:14 Thank you to my teachers,
20:16 and to all of us,
20:19 because I don't know what's next,
20:22 but I do know whatever it is.
20:27 Because of you, I'm ready for it.
20:33 Thank you.
20:34 [APPLAUSE]
20:36 [MUSIC]
20:38 [APPLAUSE]
20:42 Looking back, it all seemed to go by in a flash.
20:46 But back then, it seemed to take forever.
20:50 I guess because you never really stop growing up.
20:53 And even though we know they're for the best,
20:55 those growing pains never really stop hurting.
20:58 But keep growing.
21:00 One day, you might even be mature enough
21:02 to start seeing the world like a child again.
21:05 Sister Rose, frigg off, you evil old--
21:08 Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu--
21:14 [MUSIC]
21:17 The last day of junior high was the best.
21:21 [MUSIC]
21:50 (upbeat music)
