00:00 The Barbie movie was without doubt one of the most talked about movies of last year.
00:05 As it broke box office records, it also sparked debate over its feminist message.
00:10 Now, Grammy award-winning singer Shakira is weighing in, sharing in a new interview with Allure magazine why the blockbuster didn't get a thumbs up in her household.
00:20 "My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating, and I agree to a certain extent.
00:26 But raising two boys, I want them to feel powerful too while respecting women."
00:31 It's a statement that's already reigniting conversation around the movie starring Margot Robbie and directed by Greta Gerwig.
00:37 The quote was part of the mag's latest cover story titled Shakira's She Willed Feminism, and the Colombian singer goes on to say,
00:44 "I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.
00:52 I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.
00:59 I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well.
01:04 We complement each other and that compliment should not be lost."
01:08 Shakira in recent years has been in the spotlight for her split from soccer player Gerard Pique, with whom she shares 11-year-old Milan and 9-year-old Sasha.
01:17 In the interview, the Hips Don't Lie singer spoke extensively on how she'd like to empower women and how those ideas influenced her latest album,
01:25 Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, Women No Longer Cry, released late last month, coming seven years after her last album.
01:33 "I want this music to build bridges, to empower people, to help women discover their own strengths.
01:39 Making this music has shown me that my pain can be transformed into creativity.
01:44 My songs are full of anecdotes and some very intense moments I have experienced in these two years,
01:50 but creating this album has been a transformation in which I have been reborn as a woman."
01:56 She went on to say, "In the past, when women went through a difficult situation, they were expected to mind their manners,
02:02 to hide the pain, to cry in silence. That's over. Now no one will control us. No one will tell us how to heal, how to clean our wounds."
