Energy conscious smart meter owners say turning lights off in a room no one’s using (29%) is the energy-saving action they believe has saved them the most money since the start of the energy crisis in 2021.

A survey of smart meter owners, carried out by Censuswide on behalf of Smart Energy GB, found other top ways people think they have saved money on their bills include using air fryers instead of the oven (26%), and washing clothes at a lower temperature (25%).

On the other hand, energy-saving behaviours such as turning off plugs and devices rather than leaving them on standby (17%), not leaving devices charging overnight (14%), and only boiling the water you need in the kettle (12%) were voted as having less impact, saving people less money.

00:00 So getting out into nature, like it's the thing I always, always say to people, and
00:10 you can make it more interesting for the kids, you can involve a treasure hunt, you can get
00:13 them to look for certain things, get them to wear wellies and take them out into the
00:19 woods where it's like really muddy. I mean kids love getting themselves filthy dirty.
00:24 I certainly do, I've got three boys. And yeah, it's just getting yourself out and doing the
00:31 exercise, having those conversations where you're not in the house, you're not directly
00:35 looking at each other.
00:36 We are struggling in the UK, many are struggling with some of the highest energy costs of any
00:42 country in Europe. Is it useful perhaps to explain the issue to kids, install some good
00:50 habits in with them with energy saving and effectively teach these habits to the kids?
00:55 Yeah, absolutely. So I do, I gamified energy usage with my children. So what I do with
01:02 them is I get them to take ownership of the energy usage in the house for a day each.
01:09 So I've got three boys. And they have a bit of a competition between us who can use the
01:14 least amount of energy. And then you're actually engaging them to go around the house, you
01:19 know, switching everything off, not leaving the lights on, not leaving your Xbox on for
01:23 five hours. And it just, it means that they actually understand that taking that action
01:31 to switch those things off is going to save you money. And oh, the result is the energy
01:37 bill is a pound less than what my brother did yesterday. So I just think it's a really
01:42 nice way to, and because we have the tools of the smart meter, you can actually like
01:47 measure it and give them a little reward as to who you know, does best for using the least
01:51 amount of energy, but it's good, good for the budget and good for the planet.
01:56 Thank you so much for your time today.
01:58 Thank you for having me.
