Last London cabmen's shelter gains heritage status

Victorian-era coachmen's shelters in London, now all protected, with the last 19th-century cottage recently listed as heritage, serve as significant community hubs, according to Andrey Armanda-Markovic, caretaker of one for 18 years.

00:23 Today, the Wellington Place Cabin Shelter just behind me
00:27 has just been listed at grade two.
00:30 It's one of 13 surviving cabin shelters in London.
00:34 And these are really important because they
00:36 are relics of the age of horse-drawn Hanson cabs
00:40 in London.
00:41 There's an unbroken history from 1875 all the way up
00:45 to the present day of these serving licensed cab
00:48 drivers in London.

01:12 And you always have the end window,
01:15 which would have been for passers-by to be
01:17 able to order tea and coffee.
01:19 But inside the shelter, it was always reserved for the cabin.
01:24 No chocolate, just a bloody coffee.
01:25 I'm in.
01:26 I'm in.
01:27 What do I eat?
01:28 Listing obviously doesn't protect shelters
01:30 from being crashed into by cars or buses,
01:32 as does happen sometimes.
01:34 But it means they have to be carefully thought about when
01:35 there's road widening schemes or there
01:37 are changes in road layout.
01:39 So we have to think about these being important elements
01:42 of that street scene.

02:05 So this shelter is more than just a taxi shelter.
02:08 This is like a little hub in this community.
02:11 So we have all sorts of people.
02:14 We have the workers, the police, the celebrities.
02:20 They come here, have a cup of tea.
02:21 No one bothers them.
02:22 Everyone's treated equally here.
02:24 So it doesn't matter how famous you are, how poor you are.
02:30 We're a family rather than a business.
02:33 That's the difference between this and, let's say,
02:35 pret a manger or something else.
02:37 This is real.
