00:00 "Is it time to stop questioning?"
00:03 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the little nuances,
00:08 easter eggs and other lesser-known gems that you may not have spotted in 'Sex and the City.'
00:13 We're not including continuity errors,
00:15 and we're only focusing on the original series, so no movies and no 'And Just Like That' today.
00:21 "My baby."
00:22 Number 20, 'Movie Night.'
00:25 The episode 'Bay of Married Pigs' explores the notion that married couples and
00:30 unattached individuals are constantly in some unspoken competition.
00:34 Carrie dates Sean, a pleasant but plain guy, and their evenings out become somewhat monotonous.
00:39 "Over the next week and a half, I met Sean for a movie.
00:43 I met him for another movie."
00:46 However, when he invites her to a party full of his married friends,
00:51 she realizes they clearly want different things and ends the relationship.
00:55 As the episode draws to a close,
00:57 Carrie goes out for a movie night with her friends, the most enduring relationship in her life.
01:02 "Sure, it'd be great to have that one special person to walk home with.
01:05 But sometimes, there's nothing better than meeting your single girlfriend for a night at the movies."
01:10 But hang on, what's that poster just behind her?
01:14 Godzilla?
01:15 Do you know who stars in that movie?
01:17 Yep, Sarah Jessica Parker's husband Matthew Broderick.
01:20 Coincidence?
01:22 We'd like to believe not.
01:23 "Come on, Eric, this way!"
01:24 "Not this way! Not that way!"
01:29 "BIG!"
01:29 Number 19.
01:33 Big's real name.
01:34 It took six seasons, lots of breakups,
01:37 and a trip to Paris before viewers finally found out Mr. Big's first name.
01:41 "And if you find someone to love the you, you love."
01:44 "Hi."
01:45 "What's shaking, baby?"
01:46 "How's Napa?"
01:46 "The house is on the market. Look out, New York. I'm a-coming."
01:50 "Well, that's just fabulous."
01:53 If you weren't paying attention when Carrie pulled out her bedazzled flip phone,
01:58 you might have missed it.
01:59 However, did you ever notice that Big's name seemed to be the punchline of one of the show's
02:03 best running jokes?
02:04 "Sorry, I didn't get your name."
02:06 "Oh, oh no, I'm sorry. Um, these are my friends. This is Natasha, and this is…"
02:12 Almost every time it was about to be unveiled, fate intervened with impeccable timing.
02:20 We'd be waiting with bated breath while these brilliantly timed interruptions
02:23 kept the reveal just out of reach.
02:25 "I'm Carrie Bradshaw. Jasneophyte. Oh, sorry."
02:32 "You're running low. Joey, Glenn Leavitt."
02:35 "Coming right up."
02:36 Executive producer Michael Patrick King said this Big reveal was a belated addition,
02:41 and he deliberately picked out the most run-of-the-mill name that came to mind.
02:46 Carrie only rides the subway once, not counting the movie.
02:50 The entertainment industry would have us believe that the subway is practically a second home to
02:55 all New Yorkers.
02:56 But we can think of one local who prefers alternative modes of transportation.
03:01 Incredibly, we don't see Carrie get on the subway until season six.
03:05 "Excuse me, hi. Which way to the Stock Exchange?"
03:09 "There."
03:10 "Thank you."
03:11 Now, let's just think about it.
03:12 Carrie's more about Manolo buying than purse pinching.
03:15 We know this has landed her in some financial turmoil.
03:18 "I spent forty thousand dollars on shoes and I have no place to live?
03:24 I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes."
03:30 So you'd think perhaps she'd want to save the roughly six dollar cab fare and join the masses
03:35 on the train.
03:36 At one point, she does take the bus as a cheaper alternative.
03:40 We know the subway can be grim, but the bus is hardly a rose garden either.
03:45 "Why do you have to take the bus if you're on the bus?"
03:47 "My thoughts exactly."
03:50 This season five episode builds up to Carrie's book launch party.
03:59 It seems like anyone who is anyone is in attendance,
04:03 including the woman responsible for countless iconic looks throughout the series.
04:07 "Isn't it perfect?"
04:09 "It's huge."
04:11 "Huge space, huge book."
04:13 "Who's coming?"
04:14 "Everyone."
04:15 "Okay, this is cuckoo."
04:17 "Guess list!"
04:17 See that woman lighting up at the bar?
04:20 We know it's kind of dark, but those flaming locks seem to belong to none other than the
04:24 series costume designer Patricia Field.
04:27 As far as we can tell, this is the only time we see the designer make an appearance.
04:31 "The party was one of those amazing events that would definitely end up on page six.
04:38 The fact that it was my party was just icing on the beautiful little cakes
04:43 that were being passed around."
04:44 However, she leaves her mark in every scene where a character wears something
04:48 you wish was in your closet.
04:50 It's just nice to put a face to a fabulous ensemble.
04:53 "You look amazing."
04:55 Sex and the City was a television landmark when it came to small screen fashion,
05:04 and each of the four women wore innumerable iconic pieces of clothing and jewelry throughout
05:08 the show's six season run, some of which carried extra significance.
05:12 For example, in the episode where Carrie breaks up with Aiden,
05:15 Sarah Jessica Parker wore her own earrings, which she claims are good luck since she was
05:20 wearing them when she won her first Golden Globe for the show.
05:22 "This isn't about you.
05:23 I'm not ready for marriage."
05:26 But one piece really stands out.
05:29 Ms. Bradshaw's nameplate Carrie necklace symbolized her self-confidence,
05:33 and towards the end of the sixth season, she loses it,
05:36 implying she's also lost something much bigger.
05:38 "No, I can't have lost my Carrie necklace, no."
05:42 So when she finds it again, viewers knew everything would be okay.
05:46 Sex and the City fans are often torn between Team Big and Team Aiden.
06:02 So, what if we told you that the signs that Carrie and Aiden were not meant to be
06:06 were there during their two breakups?
06:08 "Let's get married tonight."
06:11 "Come on, you got this beautiful white dress on.
06:13 I got this tux for another 13 hours.
06:17 Let's just do it."
06:20 They first split up after Carrie comes clean about her and Big's affair shortly before
06:25 Charlotte's wedding.
06:26 She's in a white-ish dress, because apparently that's appropriate bridesmaid attire,
06:30 and he's suited and booted.
06:32 "I never meant to hurt you."
06:33 "I know."
06:35 "But I did."
06:40 Eventually, they reconcile and even get engaged, which brings us to breakup number two.
06:45 Look at them both dressed to the nines,
06:48 Carrie in that beautiful white gown and Aiden all dapper in a tuxedo.
06:52 Their outfits might scream wedding, but their relationship most definitely doesn't.
06:56 "If you don't want to marry me right now, you'll never want to marry me."
07:02 "That's not true."
07:04 "I think it is."
07:08 Remember when Carrie used to break the fourth wall?
07:10 Let's rewind to the earliest days of Sex and the City.
07:14 Remember when Carrie would chat directly with the viewers?
07:17 "How the hell did we get into this mess?"
07:19 Now, remember how those moments suddenly vanished?
07:22 It turns out that the folks behind the scenes realized it was distracting audiences from
07:26 becoming fully absorbed in Carrie's world.
07:28 "It's like the riddle of the Sphinx.
07:30 Why are there so many great unmarried women and no great unmarried men?"
07:36 Also, she was already narrating, so did we really need her to break the flow even more?
07:41 Do you also remember how the episodes would feature short interviews with random characters?
07:46 Apparently, that was an homage to the books and articles written by Candace Bushnell that
07:50 inspired the show.
07:51 "Being beautiful is such a power.
07:53 You can get whatever you want."
07:55 "You can get anything.
07:56 I've been offered trips to Aspen, weekends in Paris, Christmas in Trambarts."
08:01 "Motorcycle, juicer."
08:04 However, they ended up feeling out of place and gradually evaporated into thin air.
08:09 Don't get us wrong, season 5 doesn't exactly skimp on the sex in Sex and the City.
08:19 However, it seems to take a backseat to storylines focusing more on the women,
08:24 their friendships and personal growth.
08:25 "I love you."
08:27 "I love you too, Richard.
08:29 But I love me more."
08:32 Charlotte navigates life post-divorce, Miranda adjusts to motherhood,
08:36 Samantha prioritizes self-love and Carrie delves into publishing.
08:40 "She imagines what she'll wear, the photographers, the toasts.
08:44 Everybody's celebrating the fact that she finally found a publisher."
08:49 This season has only eight episodes, which is said to be due to Sarah Jessica Parker's pregnancy.
08:55 So maybe they just wanted to save the juicy stuff for a time when it could be given the
08:59 attention it deserves.
09:00 Still, one thing is for sure, season 5 is all about the ladies.
09:05 "Would you mind taking our picture?
09:07 Thank you."
09:08 "This is a moment we're gonna want to remember."
09:10 "Turns out, it was."
09:15 Number 12.
09:17 Natasha mostly wears white.
09:19 In season 2, we meet Natasha, Big's 20-something-year-old fiancé.
09:24 "Carrie, this is Natasha."
09:25 "Hi, it's a pleasure to meet you.
09:27 I've heard so much about you."
09:28 "Oh, really?"
09:31 As Carrie and Big continue to cross paths, Carrie finds herself bumping into Natasha
09:35 quite often.
09:36 Keen-eyed fans might have noticed Natasha tends to dress in white, beige, and other
09:41 neutral colors.
09:42 "That looks nice, that, um, what you have on there."
09:45 "You think?
09:46 Yeah, I, uh, need something for this women in the arts luncheon I helped organize."
09:52 It seems this was deliberate to show how calm and uncomplicated she is compared to Carrie.
09:57 There are, however, two exceptions to this pattern.
10:01 Firstly, in "Ex and the City," Natasha blends into the crowd in a black gown while
10:05 Carrie wears white.
10:06 Make of that what you will.
10:08 The second time is during their infamous confrontation over lunch, where a burst of pink
10:13 seemingly represents Natasha's rage.
10:15 "Sorry that you felt the need to come down here.
10:18 Now not only have you ruined my marriage, you've ruined my lunch."
10:26 11.
10:26 No fashion repeats.
10:28 "Ex and the City" has got to be one of the most fashionable series out there.
10:32 Whether you're more of a Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha, or Miranda, you've probably selected
10:36 the outfits you wish you could own.
10:38 And there's a lot to choose from.
10:39 "Carrie, I have to look fabulous.
10:41 Everyone is going to be there."
10:42 Believe it or not, you're highly unlikely to see any character wear the same outfit
10:47 more than once across the series.
10:49 In fact, Carrie's fur coat might just be the only exception.
10:52 She wears it in season one and then again in the series finale.
10:56 "Well, that's just fabulous."
10:59 SJP said she kept a lot of Carrie's signature pieces, which came in handy when the series
11:04 got revived.
11:05 We're glad to see our favorites are still in vogue.
11:07 "Ten hours later.
11:08 All dressed up and no Petrovski to go."
11:14 10.
11:16 The women at the benefit are real cancer survivors.
11:19 The women at the benefit are real cancer survivors.
11:22 In one of the most moving moments of the series, Samantha gives a speech at a charity benefit.
11:28 "If you want to see the face of breast cancer, look around you.
11:32 It's the woman next to you at the dry cleaners."
11:38 While her words are certainly encouraging, she struggles to deliver due to the side effects
11:42 of her treatment.
11:43 Then, in an incredibly empowering move, she takes off her wig and gets real with her audience.
11:48 "Oh, to hell with it.
11:50 That's better."
11:54 This inspires other women to stand up and do the same.
11:58 What you may not know, however, is that reportedly, these women are real cancer survivors.
12:04 This has always been a standout scene due to Samantha's rawness.
12:07 Including real survivors really drives home how crucial it is to have these
12:12 conversations in mediums that reach a wide audience.
12:15 [Applause]
12:21 Number 9.
12:22 Mikhail Baryshnikov is quite the musician.
12:24 In season 6 of the show, Carrie gets involved with an artist named Alexander Petrovsky,
12:30 played by the famous dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov.
12:33 Be sure to take a look at some of the artwork in Petrovsky's home because apparently,
12:37 much of it came from Baryshnikov's personal collection.
12:40 Turns out, besides being an amazing actor and dancer, he's also a skilled musician.
12:45 In the episode "Ick Factor," he plays Carrie a tune that he says he wrote just for her.
13:00 We can't confirm he really did create it for Carrie.
13:06 But apparently, it was actually composed by the actor.
13:10 Keep an ear out for it again in the series finale when Carrie wanders around Paris alone.
13:14 Number 8.
13:26 The show tried not to date itself.
13:28 You may notice that while the girls are running around NYC,
13:32 they encounter surprisingly few of the posters, billboards, and ads you'd encounter in real life.
13:37 "But sometimes, there's nothing better than meeting your single girlfriends for a night at the movies."
13:42 That's because the producers of the show intentionally omitted anything that would
13:51 date the show too much.
13:52 Though there are some exceptions throughout the series where advertisements are left in.
13:56 We saw the Godzilla poster earlier on.
13:59 However, perhaps most notably in the episode "The Good Fight,"
14:02 when Samantha and Richard Wright are dancing on the rooftop.
14:05 Originally, you could see the towers of the World Trade Center in the background.
14:09 But they were digitally edited out in post-processing to keep the focus on the scene at hand.
14:14 Number 7.
14:20 For a long time, it was eternally spring in New York City.
14:24 For the first four seasons of "Sex and the City," it seemed like it was always either spring or summer.
14:29 This let the girls travel around the city in their most fashionable outfits
14:33 without ever having to cover up for warmth.
14:35 "And why would you be doing this?"
14:37 "I can't go any farther down this love road and have my heart broken.
14:40 If he's shitting on me, I have to know now."
14:42 They also rarely celebrate major holidays on the show.
14:45 So we never see Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Valentine's Day.
14:49 It's only in the season 4 finale "I Heart N.Y."
14:52 that we finally see the seasons begin to change for the first time on the show.
14:56 "It was official. A new season had begun."
15:00 In the later episodes, we see the characters living through New York's harsh winter,
15:05 and it definitely gives the story a different feel.
15:07 "And further uptown, Charlotte didn't mind the cold.
15:11 She had a new puppy love to keep her warm."
15:13 Number 6.
15:14 You rarely hear about the girls' families.
15:16 Something that goes hand in hand with not celebrating holidays
15:19 is the fact that we see and hear surprisingly little about the girls' families
15:23 throughout the run of the show.
15:24 "And the down payments coming from your father?"
15:29 "No. Just me."
15:32 We never meet any of the girls' parents, or really learn much about them at all.
15:37 With the exception of the episode where Miranda's mother dies,
15:41 or that time Carrie makes a throwaway remark about her absentee father.
15:44 "Hey, do you think it really can be as simple as 'My father walked out,
15:48 therefore I'll always be messed up about men'?"
15:51 Even when Charlotte is planning a wedding and eventually gets married,
15:54 her family never plays a role.
15:56 Although we do meet her brother Wesley in season 2.
15:59 The idea behind this seems to be that the family you're born into
16:02 doesn't always matter as much as the one you make for yourself.
16:05 "Don't laugh at me, but maybe we could be each other's soulmates."
16:10 Number 5.
16:11 One actor appears in two different roles.
16:14 Justin Theroux, who was still in the early days of his career,
16:18 appeared on Sex and the City not once but twice in the first two seasons,
16:22 playing two completely different characters.
16:27 In season 1, he plays a guy named Jared that Carrie uses to make Big jealous
16:32 when she realizes their relationship isn't monogamous.
16:35 "What the hell happened to you?"
16:36 "His name is Jared. He's really cute and really successful."
16:40 "And he just put his arms around me."
16:44 He plays a bigger role in season 2 as Von Weisel,
16:47 a man Carrie starts dating who turns out to have some shortcomings
16:50 that cause them to part ways despite the fact that Carrie loves his family.
16:54 "It was inevitable this would happen."
16:56 "I just didn't know it would happen so quickly."
17:04 Number 4.
17:05 Michael Patrick King made it onto the show in some ways.
17:08 "Bad, worse, loser, disaster."
17:13 Though Sex and the City was created by Darren Star,
17:16 most people know Michael Patrick King as the man behind the show.
17:19 He worked as a writer, producer, and director for many episodes,
17:23 and it turns out he found ways to insert himself into the show.
17:25 "Eat me."
17:26 "Excuse me?"
17:28 "Eat me."
17:30 He also memorably played the voice of the sandwich Miranda thought was sexually harassing her,
17:34 and lent his vocal talents by yelling "feces" in an episode that takes place at a mental health facility.
17:40 His handwriting stands in for the girls in a few scenarios,
17:48 notably in one episode where Miranda is taking notes to prep for a phone call with Steve.
17:52 Number 3.
17:54 Music foreshadowed Charlotte's divorce.
17:56 When Charlotte meets Trey, their relationship is a love at first sight whirlwind,
18:01 and before viewers knew it, they were heading down the aisle.
18:04 "Trey can't get it up."
18:05 "What?"
18:07 "We slept together last night and he couldn't get it up."
18:10 Were there some red flags before they said their I do's?
18:13 Oh, definitely.
18:14 But there was one subtle hint the producers gave us viewers that we may not have picked up on.
18:18 "We should go."
18:19 "All right."
18:19 "Come on."
18:20 "Okay."
18:21 [Music]
18:32 The Scottish bagpipe music playing as Charlotte prepares to walk down the aisle
18:35 isn't typically a wedding song, but rather a funeral dirge,
18:38 which was meant to symbolize the fact that Charlotte is walking straight into a doomed marriage.
18:43 [Music]
18:52 Number 2.
18:53 Carrie eventually stops asking questions.
18:56 "Why are there so many great unmarried women and no great unmarried men?"
19:00 One of the elements that remains consistent throughout the series is that Carrie poses
19:05 questions to the audience that often form the basis for her columns.
19:09 "When it comes to finance and dating, I couldn't help but wonder,
19:13 why do we keep investing?"
19:15 They vary widely from episode to episode, but at the end of season 6 when the show is coming to a
19:20 close, Carrie actually stops asking questions altogether. In the episode "Splat" when she
19:26 decides she's going to move to Paris to be with the Russian, she asks, "Is it time to stop
19:30 questioning?" but ultimately changes the question mark to a period.
19:34 "Is it time to stop questioning?"
19:41 According to the DVD commentary, this is the last time she asks her famous questions in the series.

20:02 Number 1.
20:05 Carrie walks the same sidewalk.
20:07 According to Michael Patrick King on the DVD commentary, the street we see Carrie walking
20:12 down at the end of the series finale as she takes a call from Big - where, as we saw earlier,
20:16 we also find out his real name - is actually the very same street she walked down in the opening
20:22 credits.
20:22 "And if you find someone to love the youth you love."
20:25 "Hi."
20:26 "What's shaking, baby?"
20:27 "How's Napa?"
20:27 "The house is on the market. Look out, New York. I'm a-coming."
20:31 "Well, that's just fabulous."
20:35 He says, though, that this time, she's actually walking in the opposite direction,
20:39 signifying the changes she's made throughout the series.
20:42 King says this artistic choice was supposed to show that, as a character,
20:45 Carrie had finally found herself and the love she'd been searching for throughout the entire
20:49 series, with her journey finally coming full circle.
