00:00:36 You can make it on your own.
00:00:40 You don't have to try, you can make it work.
00:00:45 'Cause you can't do it on your own.
00:00:49 This show is for you.
00:00:54 You can make it on your own.
00:01:00 From every year, the moment is here.
00:01:05 Share my dreams, the mission's clear.
00:01:09 Strong and fierce, the moment's here.
00:01:13 Share my dreams, the mission's clear.
00:01:18 One, two, three, raise your voice.
00:01:22 A revolution comes when you're high and bold.
00:01:26 You can make it on your own.
00:01:30 You don't have to try, you can make it work.
00:01:35 Stacy!
00:01:44 Oh my gosh, Laura, I am so sorry.
00:01:47 What's got you so engrossed?
00:01:50 Whatever happened to legendary photographer Shane Mitchell?
00:01:54 I was always such a fan of his and wondered why he disappeared from the art world.
00:01:58 Shane Mitchell? I think I remember him.
00:02:01 In his early 20s, phenom photographer Shane Mitchell took the art world by storm with his candid series Passion.
00:02:08 That's right, that was incredible.
00:02:10 But as quickly as it gained notoriety, he just as quickly vanished.
00:02:14 Didn't he mark his photos with some kind of signature or something?
00:02:17 Yes, a fingerprint. It was groundbreaking.
00:02:20 That's right. Where has he been for the past ten years?
00:02:27 I need to tell what he looks like from this picture.
00:02:29 Wait a minute. Laura, did you finish your portfolio?
00:02:33 Laura, these are wonderful.
00:02:39 Thank you. That means a lot coming from a future head curator.
00:02:43 Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I still need to find a space.
00:02:46 But one day, I'll proudly hang your work.
00:02:49 In the meantime, hopefully Roxanne likes my work as much as you do and agrees to put me in the newcomer showcase.
00:02:55 [Gasp]
00:02:56 Ladies?
00:02:58 Where is it?
00:03:04 Roxanne, I brought in my portfolio for you to review for the-
00:03:10 There will be no reviewing anything today. We've got a huge problem with Gala.
00:03:14 What's the matter?
00:03:15 Philip has decided our roster of artists is not up to his standards.
00:03:19 He wants an A-lister. And since he is this gallery's biggest underwriter, it means we either find a star or we find new jobs.
00:03:27 Um, what about Jessica Tammer? She's-
00:03:31 She just showed in New York and Philip wants a premiere.
00:03:34 Right. Oh, um, there's also Christopher Henson. He's-
00:03:37 Under contract with a gallery in Los Angeles.
00:03:39 Maybe we could find new underwriters?
00:03:41 The Minton family has been this gallery's underwriter for generations.
00:03:45 I can't be the curator who lost them.
00:03:49 Oh my god.
00:03:50 Shane Mitchell?
00:03:54 Did you say something?
00:03:55 Mm-mm.
00:03:57 Well, I better make some calls. Do not disturb me unless it's an emergency.
00:04:02 Roxanne, we're gonna get you a muffin to go with that coffee.
00:04:08 Blueberry, please!
00:04:09 Okay.
00:04:10 What is going on?
00:04:17 You tell me. I've known you long enough to know that there's something on your mind.
00:04:21 I don't understand.
00:04:25 I'm gonna try and find Shane Mitchell and get him to premiere a new work at the gala.
00:04:29 The same Shane Mitchell that's been in hiding? And the same gala that's in two weeks?
00:04:33 Exactly. Coming on the heels of this article and premiering new work after ten years? It'd be a coup.
00:04:38 Yes, but nobody knows where he is.
00:04:40 Well, according to the article, he could be running a coffee shop in Newton, Oregon. That's only two towns away.
00:04:46 But it also says he could be in the middle of the ocean with Greenpeace, rescuing whales, or somewhere in Mexico City.
00:04:51 I know you love this gallery, but—
00:04:52 I have to try, Stacey. I can't just sit back and do nothing.
00:04:55 Besides, what's the harm in seeking out Newton for a few hours?
00:04:59 I don't know.
00:05:02 Will you cover for me at least? Please?
00:05:07 For the record, I think this is crazy. But if anyone can do it, you can.
00:05:14 Thank you, thank you, thank you!
00:05:19 Hey, listen, I'm sure he was a great photographer. But my name is Mitch, not Shane Mitchum.
00:05:38 Oh, Mit—Mitchell. Look, the only photos I take are of my dog.
00:05:44 You got it.
00:05:47 Another reporter.
00:05:52 It'll die down. It always does, when something bigger and better comes along.
00:05:58 That the mail?
00:05:59 Mostly bills, unfortunately.
00:06:01 Why'd you say your name was Mitch?
00:06:04 Throws 'em off the scent.
00:06:06 And you don't tell them who you are because?
00:06:08 Because I don't want to have to deal with all the questions that come along with that.
00:06:12 Why'd you stop taking photographs? Why a coffee shop? Will you ever start again? Will you?
00:06:18 Look, I'm just not that guy anymore. Okay?
00:06:25 Besides, we have real work to do figuring out how to bring in more customers.
00:06:31 Why do you pretend to have a dog?
00:06:35 Because if I'm going to have to deal with them calling me, I think I should be able to have a little bit of fun.
00:06:40 Now let's talk business.
00:06:42 I've had a few thoughts, actually.
00:06:44 What's this?
00:06:46 Just some ideas. Promotions, advertising options. Ways to hopefully entice the customer. It's just a start.
00:06:54 Wow. Good work. Thanks, Jensen.
00:06:59 Six coffee shops in one town?
00:07:02 Here we go.
00:07:07 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:09 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:11 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:13 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:15 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:17 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:19 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:21 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:23 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:25 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:27 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:29 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:31 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:33 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:35 I'm going to have to get a new car.
00:07:36 Hi there. How can I help you?
00:08:01 Yes, thank you.
00:08:04 Would you like to have a, uh…
00:08:05 Coffee?
00:08:07 No. I mean, yes, please.
00:08:10 You know, you're shaking your head no.
00:08:14 Am I?
00:08:16 Do you have anything without caffeine?
00:08:20 Decaf?
00:08:22 Maybe just something cold. Thirst quenching.
00:08:26 Water?
00:08:28 Yes!
00:08:31 I think I just had a little too much caffeine on an empty stomach.
00:08:34 Help yourself.
00:08:36 Hey, why don't you have a seat?
00:08:56 Thanks.
00:08:57 Here. A brief charge. Eat.
00:09:10 Wow. Thank you.
00:09:12 That's delicious. Did you bake it?
00:09:19 I did.
00:09:21 It might be the best muffin I've ever tasted.
00:09:24 I think you're just starving and over-caffeinated.
00:09:26 Does a Shane Mitchell happen to work here?
00:09:32 No. No. Sorry.
00:09:34 Figures.
00:09:37 Why are you looking for him? If you don't mind me asking.
00:09:42 I had some half-baked idea. He's a photographer who's kind of hiding out.
00:09:47 I thought if I could find him, I could convince him to premiere new work at this wonderful little gallery I work for.
00:09:53 We need a star for our upcoming gala.
00:09:56 A star? Huh?
00:09:58 Except he's probably in the middle of the Atlantic riding a humpback whale.
00:10:03 I'm sorry?
00:10:05 The more I think about it, he's pretty overrated anyway.
00:10:07 I mean, he had a couple successful shows, all with candids. But anyone can get lucky with candids.
00:10:13 You click the shutter enough times, you're bound to get a good shot eventually.
00:10:18 Still lifes? That's what I do. Those take skill. Preparation. Compositional talent.
00:10:25 That's the real art.
00:10:28 Okay. Well.
00:10:35 Nice talking to you. Enjoy your muffin.
00:10:43 You know this is just my opinion and all, but I don't think candids are as easy as you think they are.
00:10:49 And with still lifes, you have total control over your elements. You don't have to do anything on the fly or rely on your instincts.
00:10:56 Some would say that requires a lot less talent.
00:11:00 How did you...
00:11:04 It's you! You're Shane Mitchell!
00:11:11 He's Shane Mitchell, isn't he?
00:11:13 Uh, okay. Yes, I'm Shane Mitchell.
00:11:17 I'm so glad I found you. Now you can do the show and the gallery won't have to close.
00:11:23 Whoa! I'm not doing any show. I don't take photographs anymore. At all.
00:11:29 At all?
00:11:31 Not in ten years. Sorry. I'm not your guy.
00:11:40 He's telling the truth.
00:11:41 You're still here.
00:12:00 I was thinking. Ten years is a long time. It could be a comeback show.
00:12:06 I thought it was overrated.
00:12:09 I never said that.
00:12:10 Click the shutter enough times and you're bound to get a good shot eventually.
00:12:14 That was just the caffeine coursing through my system. You can't hold that against me.
00:12:17 Who are you?
00:12:19 Laura Dillon.
00:12:21 And what? You're a curator or something?
00:12:24 Goodness no. I'm an assistant at the gallery. And a photographer.
00:12:28 So your boss sent you here to...
00:12:30 No. She doesn't know I'm here. I was going to surprise her once I found you and you agreed.
00:12:36 Wait. There's money in this gala thing?
00:12:39 Yes. Collectors. Rich collectors will buy his work. They'll buy your work.
00:12:45 They'll buy your work? With money?
00:12:49 But I don't take photographs anymore so there's no work to buy.
00:12:54 Couldn't you use the extra cash? Doesn't seem like you have much going on here.
00:13:01 You're insulting my shop now.
00:13:04 I didn't mean it like that. I just meant that it's only two weeks of your life.
00:13:08 Two weeks? Even if I wanted to I couldn't put together a show in two weeks.
00:13:12 I'm not your star. So unless you want that muffin recipe, you should go.
00:13:19 You're serious?
00:13:21 Yes, I am.
00:13:23 [music]
00:13:41 Send message to Stacy. I found him. But I'm going to need your help tomorrow.
00:13:48 [music]
00:14:04 Enjoy.
00:14:06 You know, I'm actually considering getting a dog.
00:14:10 Really? People like dogs.
00:14:13 Like a canine coffee shop mascot. Maybe to help bring in some customers.
00:14:17 Oh, I got it.
00:14:19 [music]
00:14:36 Shane!
00:14:38 Is he inside?
00:14:40 Yeah.
00:14:43 [music]
00:14:46 Yeah, sounds good. Bye.
00:14:49 [music]
00:14:53 Hi, I'm Stacy. It's an honor to meet you.
00:14:56 Your passion series, your use of texture along with the contrast of black and white,
00:15:00 it all came together in such a breathtaking way.
00:15:03 Wow, thank you. Good to know you're friends with someone who has good taste.
00:15:09 So, you want to let me know what's going on with all this?
00:15:13 I have a proposal. Well, kind of a bet, actually.
00:15:17 A contest.
00:15:19 Right. Part bet, part contest.
00:15:21 Go on.
00:15:23 We each take one photo. Just one shot of anything in the shop.
00:15:26 But I don't take pictures anymore.
00:15:28 Do this with me today. Only one shot, and we'll get some neutral parties to pick their favorite.
00:15:33 And if they pick mine, you agree to do the gala.
00:15:37 But again, I don't take photographs anymore.
00:15:39 And if they pick yours, you'll never have to see me again.
00:15:41 Now that's intriguing.
00:15:44 And if I say no to this proposition?
00:15:47 Then you'll see me every day, all day, until the day of the gala.
00:15:51 Laura is pretty tenacious.
00:15:53 Why are you so stuck on this?
00:15:56 Because it is a mutually beneficial opportunity for you and the gallery.
00:16:00 And because I believe there's still a photographer in you, whether you see it or not.
00:16:06 Plus, if the gallery stays open, she'll have a shot at the newcomer showcase.
00:16:10 It's true.
00:16:12 Regardless, my gut tells me that despite your obstinance and arrogance...
00:16:18 Arrogance?
00:16:20 That you're the guy to make this gala a success.
00:16:23 And I always listen to my gut.
00:16:25 One shot.
00:16:30 Of anything in here, and you'll go away?
00:16:35 Mm-hmm. I'll even do it candid.
00:16:37 Because you're probably pretty rusty.
00:16:40 I'll have you know, I can take a great still life. I just always chose not to.
00:16:45 So, it's a bet?
00:16:50 Fine. But I need my equipment downstairs.
00:16:55 Okay.
00:16:57 Let's do this.
00:17:00 [Music]
00:17:29 Is that a digital camera?
00:17:30 It is. Why?
00:17:32 You can't use digital.
00:17:36 It's too much about the technology, not about the art.
00:17:39 You lose all the intricate details.
00:17:42 That may have been true ten years ago, but the technology has come a very long way.
00:17:46 And I like the ability to change film speeds on the fly.
00:17:50 And these days, filters can be built in.
00:17:53 Plus, you can be sure you get the shot you need.
00:17:57 Yeah. Taking our photos, and you're bound to get a good one eventually.
00:18:01 I said that once.
00:18:03 Fine.
00:18:05 Could you bring over the light stand, please?
00:18:07 Sure.
00:18:09 What now?
00:18:15 Just all that equipment. Looks like you're filming a movie or building a spaceship.
00:18:19 It does not.
00:18:21 What?
00:18:22 Hey Shane, what are you doing here? A little movie or something?
00:18:30 We're having a little photo contest.
00:18:35 Oh, no way. You take photographs?
00:18:37 I used to.
00:18:39 Beautiful once.
00:18:41 Got your usual coming up?
00:18:43 Hey.
00:18:45 You should stick around. We're going to vote which one we like once they're finished.
00:18:49 Nice. Not a lot of people here, though. Want me to call up some buds?
00:18:53 Sure.
00:18:55 Sweet. I got you.
00:18:57 These are one regular.
00:18:59 Oh.
00:19:01 Jensen, may I have one of those delicious muffins, please?
00:19:04 Add it to her tab.
00:19:06 He's kidding.
00:19:08 You're kidding, right?
00:19:11 Mostly.
00:19:14 [music]
00:19:16 Hey. What are you doing?
00:19:35 The light was blowing out my shot. I was ruining it.
00:19:40 Really? Natural light was ruining your shot? Use a polarized filter or change up the ISO.
00:19:44 I prefer having control of my atmosphere.
00:19:48 Art isn't control. In fact, a photo is a moment in time captured, not a moment manipulated.
00:19:55 Hey, guys. Let's be nicer to the blinds. Okay? We can't afford new ones.
00:20:00 I'm a creative. I create. What you do is essentially copy.
00:20:06 I copy?
00:20:09 You know, my sister's wedding photographer used a lot of natural light.
00:20:12 See? People love natural light.
00:20:15 That sounds wonderful. For weddings.
00:20:21 I heard that.
00:20:23 Okay, okay, okay.
00:20:27 Shane, since you need the light, why don't you take your photo first?
00:20:33 Then after he's done, Laura, you go.
00:20:36 Deal?
00:20:39 Fine.
00:20:40 Fine by me.
00:20:42 She's good.
00:20:45 And...
00:20:55 Done.
00:20:57 Yep. That's the one. Right there.
00:21:03 How will you develop it, though?
00:21:07 I'll keep my stuff in the basement. Give me 15 minutes.
00:21:09 Anybody want me to refresh their drinks while we wait for the final results?
00:21:19 What?
00:21:20 Okay.
00:21:21 [door opens]
00:21:23 [music]
00:21:24 [music]
00:21:26 [music]
00:21:27 [music]
00:21:48 [music]
00:21:50 [music]
00:21:51 [music]
00:21:53 [music]
00:21:55 [music]
00:21:57 [music]
00:21:59 [music]
00:22:01 [music]
00:22:03 [music]
00:22:05 [music]
00:22:07 [music]
00:22:09 [music]
00:22:11 [music]
00:22:13 [music]
00:22:15 [music]
00:22:18 [music]
00:22:19 [music]
00:22:21 [music]
00:22:23 Okay. Welcome to the first ever STEAM photo contest.
00:22:32 We need your help.
00:22:34 I always say it's not the artist that determines whether the art is great.
00:22:37 It's good people like you.
00:22:39 So, take a look and cast your vote.
00:22:43 [music]
00:22:45 [music]
00:22:47 [music]
00:22:48 [music]
00:22:50 [music]
00:22:52 [music]
00:22:54 [music]
00:22:56 [music]
00:22:58 [music]
00:23:00 [music]
00:23:02 [music]
00:23:04 Well, it was really close, but the winner of the first STEAM photo contest is...
00:23:10 Laura.
00:23:12 Yes!
00:23:14 [applause]
00:23:16 [music]
00:23:17 What are you doing?
00:23:20 My happy dance.
00:23:22 Oh, I have to call Roxanne.
00:23:25 [music]
00:23:27 [music]
00:23:29 [music]
00:23:31 Laura, where are you?
00:23:33 I'm in Newton.
00:23:35 Newton? Why?
00:23:37 Because I found Shane Mitchell here and he's agreed to premiere new work at the gala.
00:23:41 That is just incredible.
00:23:45 What?
00:23:46 If I'm going to be working for her, I'd like a word.
00:23:49 Roxanne, Shane would like to speak with you.
00:23:52 Of course. Put him on.
00:23:54 [music]
00:23:56 [music]
00:23:58 Hi.
00:24:00 Shane, I can't tell you what a wonderful surprise it is to have you headline our gala.
00:24:04 I'm so glad. But look, if I'm going to do this in only two weeks, I'm going to need an assistant.
00:24:09 Oh, yes, of course.
00:24:13 Shane, can I ask you to please put me on speakerphone?
00:24:16 Sure.
00:24:18 Wonderful. Laura, congratulations. You get to be Shane's assistant for the next two weeks.
00:24:25 I'm sorry, his assistant?
00:24:28 You know our budget is tight and Stacy can cover for you here.
00:24:31 Oh, and do a good job. We can definitely get you in that newcomer showcase.
00:24:36 Really? The newcomer showcase?
00:24:39 Really. Keep me updated.
00:24:42 Okay.
00:24:43 Looks like you need me.
00:24:48 Sounds like you need me.
00:24:50 See you tomorrow morning. Early.
00:24:54 [music]
00:24:56 Thanks for helping me with everything today.
00:25:11 I was happy to.
00:25:12 [phone notification]
00:25:14 Something good?
00:25:18 Yes. It's just this new artist I found. She's got great instincts. I think she's going to have quite the career.

00:53:07 - Ask me again in a few days.
00:53:08 Something on your mind?
00:53:14 - I don't know.
00:53:17 I was staring at my print and I realized,
00:53:19 you're right, my work is cold.
00:53:23 - Listen, when I said that, I didn't know-
00:53:27 - No, no, you were right.
00:53:28 I can't ask people to connect with prints
00:53:30 that I myself are disconnected from, you know?
00:53:33 - I do, but don't let that discourage you.
00:53:36 - It's not, honestly.
00:53:40 It's kind of exciting in a way.
00:53:42 Not that it won't be challenging,
00:53:44 but I'm eager to figure it out
00:53:45 because I know once I do, my work will only get better.
00:53:48 - You know, the technical side of photography
00:53:52 was always very difficult for me.
00:53:55 - That's funny.
00:53:58 That part was always easy for me.
00:54:00 (footsteps)
00:54:03 - The emotional part was always a real hurdle.
00:54:05 - Why do you think that is?
00:54:08 - I've been thinking about that.
00:54:11 I think it's because I moved around a lot as a child.
00:54:15 My father was in the military,
00:54:17 so every few years he'd get assigned someplace new.
00:54:20 And I wasn't shy,
00:54:22 but I hated being the new girl all the time.
00:54:25 My parents bought me a camera one Christmas
00:54:27 and I just loved it.
00:54:29 And with still lifes, I could focus on inanimate objects
00:54:32 instead of something or someone I might have to say goodbye
00:54:37 to and now here I am pulling you out of hiding
00:54:41 only to discover that I was kind of hiding out as well.
00:54:44 - Oh, we can come out of hiding together.
00:54:48 - Can't believe the gala is in three days.
00:54:55 So do you think you'll continue?
00:54:59 - Taking photographs, I mean?
00:55:00 - Well, someone's gonna have to keep the gallery walls full.
00:55:03 - That's true.
00:55:05 Well, it's late.
00:55:09 Got a lot of work to do tomorrow.
00:55:12 - Then I guess it's goodnight.
00:55:14 - I'll see you tomorrow, Shane.
00:55:18 - See you tomorrow.
00:55:21 - Bye.
00:55:23 (gentle music)
00:55:25 - I think that's everything.
00:55:44 How are you feeling?
00:55:49 - I don't know.
00:55:52 I think this is the first moment I've really had
00:55:54 to absorb the fact that I'm gonna be showing work.
00:55:57 I'm gonna be a photographer again.
00:56:01 - Well, for what it's worth,
00:56:03 I'm glad you get to show your talent with the world again.
00:56:06 What?
00:56:10 - I'm gonna be right back.
00:56:20 (gentle music)
00:56:23 A little thank you gift.
00:56:25 - Shane, you didn't have to.
00:56:27 - I was gonna wait till the gala,
00:56:30 but I think maybe now is better.
00:56:33 Well, it's just the two of us.
00:56:36 - I don't know what to say.
00:56:37 - I do.
00:56:41 Thank you, Laura.
00:56:44 When you first showed up all wired and jittery,
00:56:48 I thought, who is this woman?
00:56:51 And now I know you to be kind, smart, talented.
00:56:58 And I can't wait to see your work in the newcomer showcase.
00:57:05 (phone buzzing)
00:57:17 - It's just Stacy checking in.
00:57:19 I guess I'll see you at the gala.
00:57:23 - Yeah, I'll get those.
00:57:29 You take the gift.
00:57:30 - Thanks.
00:57:31 - Ladies, have you got everything?
00:57:38 - We do.
00:57:39 - Great.
00:57:40 Laura, you'll stay here and manage the gallery.
00:57:42 Stacy, I need you to come with me.
00:57:43 We've got back-to-back meetings,
00:57:45 so I'll need you for backup.
00:57:46 - No problem.
00:57:47 I can man the front.
00:57:48 Hi.
00:58:09 Welcome to the Corner Gallery.
00:58:12 What brings you in today?
00:58:14 - Hello.
00:58:15 My name's Michael.
00:58:16 My friend, Phillip Minton, told me that Shane Mitchell
00:58:20 would be premiering new work.
00:58:22 - Yes, that's right, at our upcoming gala.
00:58:26 - Wow, that is incredible.
00:58:27 I'm an art collector myself and such a fan of his work.
00:58:30 Phillip mentioned I could get a little preview
00:58:32 because I'll be leaving town tomorrow.
00:58:34 - Well, previews typically are not allowed,
00:58:37 but Phillip sent you?
00:58:39 - He did, yes.
00:58:41 Are you the curator, Roxanne?
00:58:43 - I'm not, I'm Laura.
00:58:45 Roxanne just stepped out.
00:58:47 Just a moment.
00:58:48 - Hi, it's Roxanne.
00:58:54 Leave a message.
00:58:55 - My boss isn't answering,
00:59:00 but if Mr. Minton told you to come,
00:59:03 I'm sure it'll be okay to show you a few of the prints.
00:59:05 - That'd be great, thanks.
00:59:06 Thank you so much.
00:59:16 I can't tell you how excited I am that Shane is back.
00:59:19 - You and me both.
00:59:21 He's pretty incredible.
00:59:23 Have a great day.
00:59:25 Spread the word.
00:59:26 - Will do.
00:59:26 (phone buzzing)
00:59:30 - Shane, can you help the customer?
00:59:46 (phone buzzing)
00:59:48 Shane?
00:59:49 I'm sorry, how can I help you?
00:59:53 (phone ringing)
00:59:56 Hey, Shane?
01:00:01 I just got an internet alert on my phone about you.
01:00:04 What are you gonna do?
01:00:16 I'm calling Laura.
01:00:17 (phone buzzing)
01:00:25 - No answer?
01:00:28 (phone buzzing)
01:00:37 (soft music)
01:00:40 (phone buzzing)
01:00:51 - Hi, Roxanne.
01:00:53 How's it going?
01:00:54 - It was going really well,
01:00:57 until I got a call from Shane.
01:00:59 Have you spoken with him?
01:01:00 - No, I just missed his call.
01:01:03 - Did you give someone a preview of his work?
01:01:07 - I did, just a few pictures.
01:01:09 He said he was sent by Phillip to check.
01:01:12 - He wasn't.
01:01:13 He is a reviewer.
01:01:14 - What did Shane say?
01:01:19 - Once you read the review,
01:01:22 you'll have an idea of what Shane said.
01:01:25 - Well, what can we do?
01:01:26 - I don't know.
01:01:27 But if we don't figure this out,
01:01:29 then the corner gallery will not be premiering Shane's work.
01:01:32 Well, I'll be lucky if this gala happens at all.
01:01:36 (soft music)
01:01:38 - Hi, I'm calling from the Steam Gallery.
01:01:49 I'm the curator here,
01:01:50 and we have a new show coming up.
01:01:53 I was wondering if I could get the number
01:01:55 of your art critic.
01:01:56 I think his name is Michael.
01:01:58 He'll be in tomorrow morning at around eight.
01:02:02 Okay, thank you.
01:02:04 (soft music)
01:02:07 - Hi.
01:02:08 - You, sorry, I can't talk right now.
01:02:11 - Please.
01:02:12 There has to be something we can do to fix this.
01:02:16 - It's a review.
01:02:17 Some are good, some are bad.
01:02:18 I'm sorry, I just wrote what I thought.
01:02:20 Shane's work was disappointing and superficial.
01:02:23 - Don't you remember your happiest moments?
01:02:25 Can you truly say that those moments were superficial?
01:02:27 - To go from passions to happy dances.
01:02:32 It was like the work of a commercial photographer
01:02:35 trying to sell me something.
01:02:37 Like his passion series, that made me feel something.
01:02:40 Look, I'm sorry, I have a deadline.
01:02:41 - Please, this is a huge opportunity for Shane
01:02:44 and for the gallery and for me even.
01:02:46 I can't screw this up.
01:02:48 - I'm sorry, okay?
01:02:50 But if I'm not early on a story, then I'm late.
01:02:53 And then no one cares what I have to talk about.
01:02:55 And then I don't get the likes and the shares
01:02:56 and the numbers to prove my worth as a journalist.
01:02:58 So I have to create my stories,
01:03:00 then I have to break them early.
01:03:01 That's just how it works these days.
01:03:03 - Well, that sounds awful.
01:03:05 - It is actually.
01:03:08 You know, I used to be able to take the time
01:03:10 to think about a show a little.
01:03:12 These days, nobody wants anything to take time.
01:03:15 - You're right.
01:03:17 But you lied to me.
01:03:19 You saw those prints under false pretenses.
01:03:23 So you kind of might just owe me five minutes of your time.
01:03:26 Plus, I got the best donuts in all of Portland.
01:03:31 - You went to Coffee Amour?
01:03:34 - I even got there early enough.
01:03:35 Their small batch coffee roasters donuts
01:03:37 with the salted toffee and-
01:03:38 - And the dark chocolate ganache and organic sprinkles?
01:03:42 - That's the one.
01:03:43 - That's an $8 donut.
01:03:45 - Now you know I'm serious.
01:03:46 - Five minutes.
01:03:50 - You know the show might be canceled now.
01:03:59 - Because of one review?
01:04:00 - Should he have stayed in hiding?
01:04:05 - He needs a thicker skin than that.
01:04:06 - The only happy dance I did was leaving the venue.
01:04:10 - Okay, maybe that one was a little harsh.
01:04:12 - A little?
01:04:13 The thing is, you only saw one small part of the show
01:04:18 and it was out of context.
01:04:20 - I saw enough.
01:04:22 - But the collection is meant to be judged as a full story.
01:04:26 And you briefly looked at three pictures
01:04:28 under false pretenses and out of order.
01:04:30 And so no wonder you thought the images were of an ad
01:04:33 because you didn't take the time to appreciate the story
01:04:36 and the humanity of each print.
01:04:39 And I know you need to be fast,
01:04:42 but wouldn't you also want to be fair?
01:04:44 - Here's what I can do.
01:04:48 I will print a retraction,
01:04:50 but I will also be there on opening night.
01:04:52 And I can't promise a favorable review after that,
01:04:56 no matter how many donuts you show up with.
01:04:59 - Thank you so much.
01:05:02 Really, thank you.
01:05:03 - I've spoken with our PR team and they're-
01:05:12 - He's pulling the review.
01:05:13 - I'll believe that when I see it.
01:05:16 - Look.
01:05:16 - We'll all be darned.
01:05:20 - How did you manage that?
01:05:23 - I appealed his integrity
01:05:25 and he's promised to come to the gala
01:05:27 to review Shane's work properly.
01:05:29 The show's still on, right?
01:05:33 - I'm not so sure, to be frank.
01:05:38 - Philip was not happy about that article.
01:05:41 And who knows what this reporter will say,
01:05:43 even when he does see the complete collection.
01:05:45 His mind might be made up
01:05:47 no matter how many more prints he sees.
01:05:49 - I understand.
01:05:51 Pulling it now might be for the best.
01:05:53 - For the best?
01:05:55 (gentle music)
01:05:57 - Why do you still have that?
01:05:59 - It reminds me of where we started
01:06:01 and how incredible it's all been.
01:06:03 How I found you and you agreed.
01:06:04 - I lost a bet.
01:06:06 - You lost a bet?
01:06:07 - That doesn't matter now.
01:06:09 And you didn't try to get out of it,
01:06:10 which you very well could have.
01:06:12 And you'd be lying if you said to me
01:06:14 that you didn't have fun.
01:06:15 So?
01:06:18 - Well, if Roxanne agrees to move forward with this,
01:06:22 so do I then.
01:06:24 - Roxanne, for what it's worth,
01:06:27 I really do believe Michael's gonna give Shane's work
01:06:29 a fresh chance.
01:06:31 And I know there's no guarantee,
01:06:32 but I really think we have something special here.
01:06:35 Something fresh and inspiring and hopeful.
01:06:39 - Okay.
01:06:42 We can move forward as planned.
01:06:44 But the future of this gallery may depend
01:06:46 on you being correct in your thinking.
01:06:48 (gentle music)
01:06:52 (doorbell rings)
01:06:54 - Hey.
01:07:00 - Hey.
01:07:01 - I'm proud of you.
01:07:06 - Why?
01:07:07 - For getting behind all the work you did with Shane.
01:07:10 And I think you'll be proud of me too.
01:07:12 - Why is that?
01:07:15 - Because I called the owner of the space in Newton
01:07:17 and we're set to meet tomorrow.
01:07:19 I know it's the day of the gala,
01:07:20 but it's the only time we can meet in the next two weeks.
01:07:22 - Oh, it's okay.
01:07:23 I'll cover for you.
01:07:24 - Thank you.
01:07:28 (upbeat music)
01:07:30 - All right, bye-bye.
01:07:35 Ladies.
01:07:37 Since we are moving ahead,
01:07:42 we've got a lot to do to catch up on
01:07:44 if we're gonna be ready in time.
01:07:46 - We can do it.
01:07:47 - You two have to do it.
01:07:48 I have meetings all day.
01:07:49 Don't worry, we can handle this.
01:07:51 - Absolutely, we won't let you down.
01:07:54 And thank you, Roxanne.
01:07:55 Okay, let's get to work.
01:07:59 (upbeat music)
01:08:02 (upbeat music)
01:08:04 (upbeat music)
01:08:07 (upbeat music)
01:08:10 (upbeat music)
01:08:12 (upbeat music)
01:08:15 (upbeat music)
01:08:17 (upbeat music)
01:08:20 (upbeat music)
01:08:23 (upbeat music)
01:08:25 (upbeat music)
01:08:28 (upbeat music)
01:08:30 (upbeat music)
01:08:33 (upbeat music)
01:08:36 - Did we even go home?
01:08:39 - I don't think I was wearing this yesterday.
01:08:41 - Maybe we sleepwalked.
01:08:44 (laughing)
01:08:46 I'll go get us some coffee.
01:08:50 - Yes, please.
01:08:51 (sighing)
01:08:53 (sighing)
01:08:55 (soft music)
01:09:19 (soft music)
01:09:22 - Right, wonderful.
01:09:27 No, of course I can make the time.
01:09:29 Bye-bye.
01:09:30 That was Jillian Dumont of the-
01:09:33 - You switched the photo.
01:09:35 - What photo?
01:09:36 - The finale photo.
01:09:37 The one that will be revealed at the end of the night.
01:09:40 - Oh, right, yes.
01:09:42 You and Stacy left off the best print of the bunch.
01:09:45 That man has a happy dance in his eyes.
01:09:48 - But Roxanne, that photo wasn't meant for-
01:09:50 - I can't talk about this right now.
01:09:52 Jillian Dumont, the head of the Dumont Trust,
01:09:55 is willing to meet with me,
01:09:56 but only if it's in the next 15 minutes.
01:09:58 And then I have back-to-back meetings
01:10:00 before I get all gussied up for tonight.
01:10:04 - But Roxanne, that print was a gift.
01:10:06 You can't use it.
01:10:07 - It was here with the other prints.
01:10:09 - Because I-
01:10:09 - Laura, you know how much is riding
01:10:11 on this gala being a success.
01:10:13 Philip has been on the verge of defunding us.
01:10:16 I have been on the verge of pulling Shane's collection
01:10:18 entirely, but that print is what I believe
01:10:22 best ensures our chance at a successful show.
01:10:25 And that is more important than anything else.
01:10:27 - But Shane didn't-
01:10:28 - Shane wants this show to be a success
01:10:30 just as much as we do.
01:10:32 Now I have to go, but understand this, Laura,
01:10:35 it's not just the newcomer showcase
01:10:37 that you have riding on this.
01:10:39 Do you understand what I'm telling you?
01:10:41 - Anybody here?
01:10:42 - Oh no.
01:10:44 (soft music)
01:10:47 Shane?
01:10:49 - It's stunning, Shane.
01:11:02 The emotion you've captured in that man,
01:11:06 it emanates from the print.
01:11:08 I was relieved to find it among the other photos.
01:11:12 When that reporter sees this in the finale,
01:11:16 I have no doubt he'll be as moved as I am.
01:11:18 And you know how much the gallery needs a positive review.
01:11:22 - Shane.
01:11:31 - Was impressing your boss that important to you?
01:11:35 - I told Roxanne that it was a-
01:11:36 - Why was it with the other prints?
01:11:39 I thought you knew what that photo meant to me.
01:11:41 - We can tell her that it wasn't meant for-
01:11:43 - And risk the gallery?
01:11:44 You heard Roxanne.
01:11:45 I can't be responsible for the gala failing.
01:11:50 And the only reason we're stuck in this position
01:11:53 in the first place is because you left the print there
01:11:56 for her to find.
01:11:57 - I know.
01:11:59 It was a mistake.
01:12:02 - You know what?
01:12:06 It's done.
01:12:07 Let's just get through the gala and be done.
01:12:11 (soft music)
01:12:13 - Are you okay?
01:12:26 - That was his gift to me.
01:12:30 I knew what it meant to him.
01:12:32 He's right.
01:12:34 I shouldn't have left it out like that.
01:12:36 - Hey, go easier on yourself.
01:12:40 But you have to admit that Roxanne does have a point.
01:12:44 That print is perfect for the finale.
01:12:46 - Not you too.
01:12:49 - I'm sorry.
01:12:50 This just isn't your ordinary gala.
01:12:52 Our livelihoods are at stake.
01:12:54 Don't you care about that?
01:12:55 - Of course I do.
01:12:57 But at what cost?
01:12:58 My integrity?
01:12:59 Shane's privacy?
01:13:01 - Trust me, Shane will forgive you after the gala
01:13:03 and once he's gotten the money that he needs.
01:13:05 - And if he doesn't?
01:13:08 - Your job was to help make the show as good as possible.
01:13:10 This print does that.
01:13:11 - No, I don't accept that.
01:13:15 I'm going to fix this.
01:13:18 - I have to get to that meeting in Newton.
01:13:21 But Laura, remember, you're finally getting your shot.
01:13:23 Don't do something rash to jeopardize that.
01:13:26 (soft music)
01:13:29 - Hey.
01:13:38 You clean up nice, huh?
01:13:39 - I guess so.
01:13:41 You know, Jensen, you've really stepped up here.
01:13:46 I wouldn't have completed my project
01:13:50 unless I had full confidence in you running things here.
01:13:53 Which is why I think you're ready to be manager.
01:13:58 - Really?
01:14:01 - Really.
01:14:02 You've earned it.
01:14:02 And no matter what happens tonight,
01:14:07 I think I'd like to continue exploring photography again.
01:14:10 And that means I need a good manager here.
01:14:13 - I won't let you down.
01:14:16 - I know.
01:14:19 - Well, we better go.
01:14:23 Hey, I'm sorry about everything with Laura.
01:14:27 - Me too.
01:14:29 But I think it's time to move on.
01:14:32 Well, we better go.
01:14:35 I promised Roxanne.
01:14:37 I wouldn't be late.
01:14:38 (soft music)
01:14:43 (people chattering)
01:15:11 - What a great turnout.
01:15:14 - Where's Laura?
01:15:14 I haven't seen her.
01:15:16 - I'm not sure.
01:15:17 I haven't spoken with her since earlier today.
01:15:19 - She better show.
01:15:21 This is a big moment for her.
01:15:22 - I'm sure she will.
01:15:23 - Good, you're here finally.
01:15:37 - I know it's late.
01:15:38 I'm sorry.
01:15:40 How's it going?
01:15:41 - Well, so far so good.
01:15:42 I haven't seen that reviewer,
01:15:44 but we've already sold four pieces.
01:15:46 - Wow, that's great.
01:15:47 - And Phillip seems cautiously optimistic.
01:15:50 - Michael is here.
01:15:54 The reviewer.
01:15:55 Michael, you came.
01:16:01 - I made a promise to view the full exhibit.
01:16:04 So that's what I'm here to do.
01:16:05 - Roxanne, this is Michael Allen, the art critic.
01:16:07 - Oh, yes.
01:16:09 - Roxanne Bridges, curator.
01:16:11 It's nice to meet you.
01:16:12 Thank you for coming.
01:16:14 - Laura made a compelling case.
01:16:16 - Please have a look around,
01:16:17 but first let me introduce you
01:16:20 to the artist behind the show, Shane.
01:16:23 I'd like you to meet Michael Allen.
01:16:29 He's one of the art critics from "Important Daily."
01:16:32 - Shane Mitchell.
01:16:33 Nice to meet you.
01:16:34 Thank you for coming tonight.
01:16:36 - Nice to meet you too.
01:16:38 - Michael, why don't we start just over here?
01:16:41 - Shane, can you step outside?
01:16:48 I would like to explain.
01:16:51 - I was given strict instructions by Roxanne to mingle.
01:16:54 - Fine, I'll tell you here.
01:16:58 - There's nothing left to tell me, Laura.
01:17:07 - First of all, I'd like to thank you all for coming
01:17:11 to the Corner Gallery's 20th anniversary gala.
01:17:15 As I've told many of you,
01:17:16 I have always been a huge fan of Shane Mitchell's work.
01:17:21 Emotional, poignant, and so very human.
01:17:25 He's a master at his craft,
01:17:27 and we are honored to be a stop on his artistic journey.
01:17:31 I could go on and on about Shane's work,
01:17:34 but why don't we hear from the artist himself?
01:17:38 Shane.
01:17:39 Your last collection, as we all remember, was "Passion."
01:17:50 How did you go from that to "Happy Dancing"?
01:17:52 - Why "Happy Dancing"?
01:17:56 While it may seem lighter, even sillier on its face,
01:18:03 the infectious joy in a happy dance
01:18:07 is a feeling that grows so powerful,
01:18:10 it engages your whole body.
01:18:12 So even though it might seem superficial,
01:18:17 the feeling is just as deep and intense as passion is.
01:18:22 Trust me, even observing a happy dance
01:18:26 can be quite contagious to your spirit.
01:18:29 But in truth, like passion, joy too can be fleeting,
01:18:34 as if the body lets go of the feeling bit by bit
01:18:38 with every movement.
01:18:40 So as a photographer,
01:18:41 it was important that I capture that peak moment in time,
01:18:46 knowing that it's unrealistic for it to last.
01:18:48 - Beautifully explained, Shane.
01:18:53 (audience applauding)
01:18:56 (gentle music)
01:18:59 - Laura.
01:19:10 Hi.
01:19:12 You're not leaving, are you?
01:19:15 - I just needed a moment,
01:19:17 but I should get back inside before they get to the finale.
01:19:19 - Listen, about earlier,
01:19:22 you needed an ear and support and-
01:19:25 - It's okay.
01:19:27 - No, I'm sorry.
01:19:29 - Thank you.
01:19:32 - How are you doing?
01:19:37 - I'd rather hear about how your meeting in Newton went.
01:19:40 - He loved the idea.
01:19:44 And apparently Shane had put in a good word for me,
01:19:47 which I think you had something to do with.
01:19:49 - I didn't say anything that wasn't deserved.
01:19:52 Did you get it?
01:19:54 - Stacey, that's so wonderful.
01:19:56 I am so happy for you.
01:19:58 - I have so many ideas.
01:20:03 - I am so proud of you, Stacey.
01:20:05 - Thank you.
01:20:06 And thank you for telling me about the place.
01:20:08 I don't think I would have considered a place
01:20:10 outside the city had it not been for you.
01:20:12 - Hey, and if you ever need an assistant,
01:20:14 you know where to find me.
01:20:16 - Okay, let's go back inside.
01:20:19 We don't want to miss the finale.
01:20:21 - Okay.
01:20:22 - And now to a finale piece that I believe
01:20:29 beautifully compliments the stunning collection,
01:20:32 so skillfully put together by the fabulous Shane Mitchell,
01:20:36 with the invaluable help of Corner Gallery's own
01:20:39 Laura Dillon.
01:20:40 So without further ado,
01:20:43 I bring you the finale to "Happy Dance."
01:20:46 (drawers opening)
01:20:49 - So here we have a mirror,
01:20:56 which is a reflection of...
01:21:01 - How true happy dances are the most joyful
01:21:05 when they come from within.
01:21:07 I had the wonderful opportunity to assist Shane
01:21:11 on this collection.
01:21:12 When I was working on it,
01:21:13 I reflected on the things that make me truly happy.
01:21:18 Whether those things are temporary or last forever,
01:21:21 I've realized that I will always be grateful for them,
01:21:24 no matter what.
01:21:25 So we thought there's no better way to close out the show
01:21:29 than by having you all reflect
01:21:31 and find your own inner happy dance.
01:21:35 (audience applauding)
01:21:39 (gentle music)

01:22:11 at the newly named Steam Cafe Coffee Shop and Gallery.
01:22:16 - That's an interesting idea.
