00:00 Gentlemen, looking for a tough, clean fight tonight.
00:02 So best of luck to both of you.
00:04 Let's touch 'em up.
00:06 [crowd chanting]
00:08 - John "Rincon" is coming off
00:10 a four consecutive decision wins.
00:12 He's a very technical southpaw.
00:15 He'll be taking on Daniel Alvarez,
00:17 who has eight fights as a pro,
00:20 but none of his opponents had a loss on their record.
00:23 They were 24-0 and 2 for a combined 92% victory.
00:29 - So he's been match tough, Tim,
00:32 and he says, "Look, I know you hear my name
00:35 and where I'm from,
00:37 but I'm not your typical Cuban boxer.
00:40 I'm a warrior."
00:41 - [laughs]
00:43 I understand that.
00:44 I mean, this is a southpaw versus orthodox battle.
00:48 Just one spot of positioning.
00:52 Getting lead foot control,
00:53 even lead hand control up front.
00:56 [crowd chanting]
00:59 - On occasion, when they throw power shots,
01:02 their heads end up on the same side,
01:03 so you got to be aware of head clashes happening
01:07 and fighting for that position outside.
01:10 Most of the time, when you have this dance battle,
01:14 they step on each other's feet.
01:16 So you might see that in this fight as well.
01:21 [crowd chanting]
01:23 - Alvarez was telling me about his story
01:27 of leaving Cuba and making it to the United States
01:30 through Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala,
01:33 a year and a half in Mexico,
01:35 and he finally made it to the U.S.,
01:37 and he says, "My case is not like many other Cubans
01:40 who came through the boat,
01:44 so I'm still dealing with my immigration documentation."
01:50 Nice right hand there from Alvarez.
01:52 - Yeah, Alvarez, I mean, he looks solid.
01:54 You know, he looks like he knows what he's doing
01:56 inside the ring,
01:57 and he was able to set up that big looping right hand.
01:59 He stayed close enough to be able to catch Rincon.
02:04 Rincon is calm and patient.
02:10 You know, he's a smooth boxer, southpaw,
02:13 tries to be slick,
02:15 looks to draw you in with that lead hand.
02:18 You know, he uses his lead hand as bait most of the time
02:20 to line up his lead-- his left hand, excuse me.
02:24 - Two, five, ten, guys.
02:26 Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
02:28 - And then occasionally he'll sweep around with the right hook.
02:30 - Ooh, nice left. - And there it is,
02:31 nice little step back.
02:32 It's exactly-- that's textbook right there
02:35 from the southpaw, Rincon.
02:37 He's gonna do that all night long.
02:39 - Yeah, he allowed Alvarez to overcommit
02:42 and then made him pay.
02:43 - Yeah, and a lot of times, see, what you're seeing now
02:45 is you're seeing someone that would say fake pressure.
02:49 He's in front of him, his presence,
02:51 but he's only in front of him,
02:53 and he's keeping the distance
02:54 just so he can throw like that,
02:57 just so Alvarez can commit.
03:01 - He saw that Alvarez throws really wide punches,
03:03 so Rincon can go with straight shots
03:07 and not get hit in the back of the head.
03:10 - That's some frustration coming from Alvarez.
03:15 - Good start from Alvarez, but an excellent finish
03:17 from Rincon with that left hand finding a home
03:20 on the Cuban's chin.
03:21 - That's the warrior coming out right now from Alvarez.
03:24 [laughter]
03:27 That's the warrior coming out.
03:31 - And he's doing it against a hometown fighter.
03:32 - Hey, keep resting, keep resting.
03:34 Hey, keep working your jab.
03:36 Hey, you're going to the wrong side.
03:37 You're going to his power hand.
03:38 Move away from his power hand.
03:40 Hey, yes.
03:41 - You got that round.
03:43 - I give it to you.
03:44 Let's work. Let's be more active.
03:46 Be patient. Don't reach.
03:47 Hey, you're doing good. Good work, bro.
03:49 Good work, good work.
03:50 Stay active on the jab.
03:52 Stop going towards his power hand.
03:53 Hey, you're going towards his power hand.
03:54 Go the other way. Step to the right.
03:56 Hey, step to the right.
03:59 - Competitive first round,
04:00 and this was the reaction from Alvarez
04:03 in front of the hometown fans.
04:07 - I just want to fight.
04:09 I'm right here.
04:10 [laughter]
04:14 - Look at his eyes, Tim.
04:15 - Hey, he's swelling up.
04:16 Why you going to swell up like that, Clyde?
04:20 - You're getting all that air in your chest.
04:22 What do you say?
04:24 Come on, Clyde.
04:25 - Go.
04:26 - Round two of a scheduled six-rounder
04:29 here in Corpus Christi, Texas.
04:31 Bernardo Osuna alongside hall-of-famer Timothy Bradley.
04:34 Nice straight left from Rincon,
04:36 who seems to have settled down
04:38 after a good start from Alvarez.
04:40 - Yeah, Rincon, definitely,
04:46 he's pretty darn clever and pretty cool
04:49 with understanding his distance and range.
04:52 That's what makes him dang good.
04:55 - You know who's good at range?
04:57 F.A. Itako.
04:58 He's going to be our co-main event fighter tonight,
05:01 taking on Guido Villanueva.
05:04 Tim, he says, "I should be taking steps up,
05:06 and I consider this fight a step back."
05:08 - Well, you know what?
05:10 The performance better illustrate that.
05:13 You can talk. Talk is cheap.
05:15 Don't come in here thinking you got something won.
05:17 You still got to go in there and do it.
05:19 It's another man just as hungry as you are,
05:21 trying to take food off your table
05:23 and get to where you want to be someday,
05:25 and that's become a heavyweight champion of the world.
05:27 - Heavyweight action with F.A. Itako and Guido Villanueva,
05:31 and in our main event,
05:32 it'll be undefeated American prospect,
05:36 the future of American heavyweights,
05:39 Jared Anderson taking on Riyad Murray,
05:41 and right now, Rincon is doing his thing.
05:44 - Did you see his face?
05:46 You see Alvarez's face?
05:47 Hey, look, anything to keep yourself in the fight.
05:51 As long as you're not being dirty,
05:52 you're not throwing elbows or doing anything silly.
05:54 Obviously, he's not gonna win the boxing match.
05:57 Rincon is just a better boxer,
05:59 but when you make it rough and tough and awkward for him,
06:02 and that's what--I think that's the game plan
06:04 of Alvarez right now.
06:06 Just wants to make it rough and tough.
06:07 - Ooh, nice counter left once again from Rincon.
06:10 Alvarez is throwing any way he can.
06:13 It's gonna be a point deduction soon.
06:16 [crowd shouting]
06:18 - Don't roll his head down.
06:19 - My bad.

06:23 - My man just looking for any opportunity
06:25 to land any level on Rincon.
06:28 [crowd shouting]
06:31 Rincon gonna catch him with that left hand again.
06:33 As soon as he sees a rush and leave his feet,
06:36 that left hand coming right down the middle.
06:37 Watch.
06:39 He's sitting on it, too.
06:42 He like, "Come on and come on in.
06:44 Come on in here." Bing!
06:45 Oh, just off the mark.
06:47 [laughs]
06:48 - Actually, Alvarez landed a right--
06:50 Hey!
06:51 Alvarez said, "Wait a second."
06:53 You said, "Break," and then all of a sudden,
06:54 he's shot. He's landed shot.
06:56 - He like, "What? Man, what we doing?
06:58 Come on.
06:59 What we doing, ref?
07:01 Let me fight."
07:03 [crowd shouting]
07:06 - Get a break, dude!
07:08 - Psst.
07:09 - Now a left to the body from Rincon.
07:13 - See, what Rincon gotta understand is that,
07:17 you know, he can be the back foot counterpuncher.
07:20 That's his style.
07:21 But however, like, he's gonna have to start--
07:23 - Ten seconds till the bell!
07:25 - Start creating your own offense.
07:26 You know, coming forward, using your jab,
07:28 changing levels, doing various things
07:30 to be able to land the shots in your offense.
07:33 [upbeat music]
07:36
07:39 - Yeah, Alvarez is more entertaining
07:41 in the last ten seconds of every round
07:43 than he is during the--
07:44 - Look, man, I love his passion.
07:47 I love his passion.
07:48 I mean, you know, he's--
07:50 he's doing what he can
07:52 to try to get himself in this fight.
07:53 I mean, he's outgunned. He really is.
07:55 He's outskilled, I should say that, but, man.
07:59 He's funny.
08:01 Hey, I need you to get inside.
08:03 Work your lead hand,
08:06 and bring your lead foot out,
08:07 and throw the right straight to his punch.
08:10 He's leaning in so you can catch him coming in.
08:14 - Hey, hey.
08:15 [speaking Spanish]
08:18 - There was some rabbit punching,
08:20 to say the least.
08:21 - Yeah, you know, it's frustration
08:23 when you have an opponent like Rincon
08:26 that's really hard to hit.
08:27 I mean, that was on the side of the head right there.
08:30 - Yeah, that-- - But that behind the head,
08:31 yeah, yeah, that's a bit--
08:33 that's a bit dirty right there.
08:35 But, again, he's trying to--
08:38 he's trying to get the young man
08:40 that's listening to the referee,
08:42 trying to get Rincon out of his game.
08:45 - Do not hold and punch.
08:47 Do not.
08:48 One more time, take it apart.
08:52 - I like that.
08:53 And you know what?
08:54 Lee Rogers, he looked like an upset--
08:57 like, he was like an upset parent
08:58 right before they were about to come out.
09:00 Like, "I'm about to have a talking with somebody."
09:05 - Right. - And he did it.
09:06 And he did it the right way.
09:07 - That's good mechanics.
09:09 That's great mechanics right there.
09:12 You know, there's a little language barrier.
09:15 However, I mean, boxing talk is pretty, you know--
09:19 - He illustrated it with, "Hey, stop doing this.
09:21 Hold it." - So, I mean, yeah.
09:23 - And hitting behind the head. - Yeah.
09:26 You can't understand that in some way.
09:30 - There's that jab from Rincon once again,
09:32 working at range.
09:34 - No, Rincon is not-- he's not a bad fighter at all.
09:39 He really isn't.
09:40 He understands distance and range.
09:42 He understands where he's able to hit his opponent
09:46 and get away at the same time,
09:48 but he just need a little bit more variation in his offense.
09:50 And last time I seen him, he did the same exact thing.
09:54 He fought the same exact way.
09:57 So he's not developing--
09:59 I don't think he's developing
10:01 in any other aspect of his game.
10:03 You know, digging down to the body,
10:04 that would help him as well.
10:07 - And that reflects in the lack of knockdowns.
10:09 He's not trying to break somebody down.
10:10 He only has two knockdowns-- knockouts and eight victories,
10:13 and both knockouts happened
10:17 in the first three fights of his professional career.
10:19 - Yeah, but when you're doing the same thing over and over,
10:21 eventually when you step up, you're gonna get red.
10:24 - Yeah. - You know, top dogs out there,
10:25 they understand what you're all about.
10:27 And once they crack the code, it's a wrap.
10:30 The floodgates are gonna open up.
10:32 He heard him with that shot.
10:33 Did you see the little happy dance
10:34 after he hit him with the straight left hand?
10:36 Yeah, he heard him with that shot momentarily.
10:38 - Break, break, clean, break, clean, break, clean.
10:41 - It almost feels like time stops.
10:43 Those moments when you get hit, boom.
10:46 It's like time freezes for a split second,
10:48 and then you come back to life.
10:50 - And there goes Alvarez trying to close the gap here.
10:51 - Break, break, break, break.
10:53 - Recon, he has no other choice.
10:56 He can't outbox Recon, so you gotta take it to him,
10:59 but the thing is is that you gotta leave yourself
11:01 enough space to be able to extend what you punch.
11:04 - Nice right hand to the body from Alvarez.
11:07 - That's good stuff right there, son.
11:09 That's really good stuff right there from Alvarez.
