Rishi Sunak declines chance to apologise over Operation Kenova report
Transcript
00:00 The recently published Canova report makes it absolutely clear that the IRA was riddled
00:05 with British agents from top to bottom. Those agents were involved in abduction, torture
00:11 and murder of British and Irish citizens. The successive British Governments knew all
00:17 about it and did nothing. The report also calls for an apology from the Government to
00:22 those victims. Will the Prime Minister take this opportunity now to make that apology?
00:29 Mr Speaker, as the Honourable Gentleman will know, this is an interim report as the Secretary
00:33 of State has laid out. We can't comment on the findings until we get the final report,
00:38 but we would never condone wrongdoing where there is evidence of this. But I will say
00:43 this also because it's not said enough. The overwhelming majority of the policed armed
00:47 forces and intelligence services served with great distinction. They defended democracy
00:53 in the face of some horrendous violence and without their service and their sacrifice
00:57 there would have been no peace process. They helped ensure that the future of Northern
01:01 Ireland will never be decided by violence but by the consent of its people.
