00:00 Welcome to Men and Motors and welcome to my review of this Genesis GV60.
00:07 Now this is not just any GV60, those nice big bright neon brake calipers will tell you
00:14 that this is the GV60 Sport Plus.
00:17 This is the grown up luxurious sibling of the EV6 and the Ioniq 5.
00:23 If you're not aware, Genesis is the luxury arm of the Hyundai group in much the same
00:27 way as Lexus are the luxury arm of the Toyota group.
00:31 This all wheel drive GV60 comes with 289 miles of range.
00:36 You can get more range in a GV60 than that but this being the top spec fast version,
00:42 more on that in a sec, you do lose a little bit of range as a result.
00:46 Speaking of that speed, this will do 0-60 in 4 seconds flat.
00:52 Yeah, 4 seconds.
00:54 The car's got over 400 brake horsepower on tap and it's also got a little boost mode
00:59 that gives you an extra 52 brake horsepower in case 400 nods simply not enough.
01:05 Like many Hyundai group cars, there's no slouch when it comes to charging either.
01:10 Plug this bad boy into a super fast charger and it will go from 10-80% in just 18 minutes.
01:18 That's quite staggering folks and really up there with the best in the business at the
01:22 moment.
01:23 The GV60 fun is not just a clever number plate by the way folks.
01:27 Do you know this car's got a drift mode?
01:29 That's right.
01:30 From the outside, quite a sensible looking car, very luxurious inside which you'll see
01:34 in a second.
01:35 But unlike me, it's able to let its hair down.
01:38 I mean it's got a drift mode.
01:39 Obviously best saved for track use, not one for the rural lanes of Dorset but there you
01:44 go, a drift mode.
01:46 Now as you might expect, all this doesn't come cheap.
01:50 The GV60 Sport Plus starts at about 67 grand and the one we've got here today is just over
01:56 75 grand because it's got every option pack possible thrown at it.
02:01 Now the boot in the GV60 is not quite as big as the one you'll find in the EV6 or the Ioniq
02:06 5 and that's because we've got more of a coupe like roofline and the car's actually a tiny
02:11 bit shorter than those two.
02:13 Now despite the fact this is about 100 litres smaller than you would get in those two cars,
02:18 that's not actually too much of a bad thing because it's a glorious big opening to get
02:23 things in and out of.
02:24 Very easy to live with and you've also got a little bit of space under here for charging
02:29 cables and the like.
02:30 You've got a 12 volt socket over there and a really simple, easy to use load cover.
02:37 To be honest, we don't travel anywhere light and this would be more than adequate for my
02:42 family and probably for yours.
02:45 So the interior of the GV60 is really luxurious.
02:50 I mean all the materials in here feel fantastic.
02:54 You will find a lot of plastic in here.
02:56 What appears to be metal is quite often plastic but it's very good quality plastic.
03:02 In some other Genesis vehicles, quite a lot of the other Genesis vehicles, you will actually
03:06 find metal in the place of the plastics.
03:10 So it feels perhaps a tiny bit of a step down from some of the other cars in the Genesis
03:14 range.
03:15 But I feel like a huge step up from the Ioniq 5 and the EV6 which both have very nicely
03:20 put together interiors themselves.
03:22 The seats in here are absolutely fantastic, massively comfortable, really lovely quality
03:28 materials and I challenge anyone not to get entirely 100% comfortable in this car within
03:34 about 5 seconds.
03:35 You can adjust just about everything you could possibly ever need to adjust.
03:40 It's got fantastic lumbar support, lower lumbar support.
03:43 So for those of you with a few back issues, this thing is going to be an absolute joy
03:47 to do a long journey in.
03:49 The steering wheel is super chunky, really nice leather wrapped.
03:54 You've got plenty of thumb controls.
03:56 It looks a tad busy but in actual fact, during the course of normal everyday driving, everything
04:01 is just in the right place and where it needs to be.
04:04 Your drive modes are easily accessible from the steering wheel.
04:06 We've got Eco, Comfort and Sports modes.
04:09 When you go into Sport mode, you'll feel the seat bolsters slightly firm up and then on
04:15 this side, we've got Boost mode.
04:17 More about that later but basically, you press that, you get an extra 52 brake horsepower
04:22 and all hell breaks loose.
04:23 Two very crisp coloured displays here.
04:26 We'll talk about the infotainment system more in a second.
04:29 As for the driver information display, possibly tip of the hat to Tesla on that one.
04:35 Basically the way it displays traffic and your vehicle on the road is something akin
04:39 to what you might find in a Tesla.
04:41 Really clear, bright, crisp head up display for the driver.
04:45 Onto the infotainment system, it's actually very good.
04:47 The standard infotainment is surprisingly good.
04:51 If you're used to the infotainment system in Kia, Hyundai vehicles, this one's very,
04:55 very similar because obviously it comes from the same stable.
04:59 You'll just find it's set out very slightly differently from those other brands.
05:02 I personally find the menus very easy to navigate.
05:05 I don't think there's any noticeable lag with anything.
05:08 All fantastic.
05:10 What's not so fantastic is we have to use a cable for Apple CarPlay and you have to
05:16 plug it in right down here and that makes no sense.
05:20 We've got a little wireless charging pad here and your wireless charging pad, your phone
05:25 sits in there very nicely and quite discreetly but it's got this bloody great cable coming
05:30 out of it because we don't have wireless CarPlay.
05:33 On a car in 2023 that's really very much a premium car and certainly has a premium price
05:40 tag, wireless CarPlay should be one of the first things on the list and it does feel
05:45 like a little bit of an oversight that it's not.
05:48 The rest of the stuff we've got here is a nice little storage cubby.
05:51 We've got heated and cooled seat controls, heat steering wheel control, all your various
05:56 surround cameras.
05:57 You can see again you've got heated and cooled seats on the passenger side.
06:00 You've got this wonderful bit of theatre here which is the orb.
06:06 When we turn the car on, it magically turns into your drive selector.
06:13 That's a great piece of kit.
06:14 You've also got a wheel here if you want to use the navigation system etc as you would
06:19 in something like the BMW iDrive system.
06:22 So instead of using the touchscreen you can just use this.
06:25 I don't, I tend to just go for the touchscreen but I know a lot of people prefer it the other
06:29 way.
06:30 Physical dials here for the radio tuning and for the volume and then we've got home menu
06:35 and back buttons here.
06:36 So really really nicely laid out.
06:39 Onto the climate controls and it's a hybrid system so you've got this super high res,
06:43 very clear crisp screen and you've got physical buttons and rocker switches for the temperature.
06:50 It's one of the best solutions to an aircon system on the market at the moment.
06:55 Full stop underlined.
06:57 You've got the flexibility of having the screen and easy visibility.
07:01 It looks quite nice and modern but you've still got physical buttons to make quick changes
07:06 without having to take your eye off the road.
07:09 So it really does the job very well indeed.
07:13 The sound system in this car, it does have the optional innovation pack which gives you
07:18 a Bang & Olufsen sound system.
07:20 It's one of the best sound systems on the market without doubt.
07:25 It's absolutely fantastic.
07:27 If you listen to any kind of music you've got this amazing separation between the different
07:32 instruments.
07:33 There's all the bass you could want.
07:34 There's plenty of top end without it becoming fizzy.
07:38 You can control more or less every aspect of the sound.
07:42 Lots of customisation available too.
07:44 You can also pump in synthetic engine sounds.
07:47 You can either get exactly that, an engine sound or you can have something quite futuristic,
07:53 spaceship-y kind of thing.
07:54 I don't so I think they're a little bit naff but the option's there if you miss it.
07:59 You've also got a very nice glove box over here which as in the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 is
08:05 actually a drawer rather than a typical glove box.
08:09 Genius bit of design that because normally with a glove box you open the lid, everything
08:14 falls out, that's the end of that.
08:16 Why not just have a drawer?
08:19 So simple yet so obvious really.
08:21 But really the fit and finish and the quality of materials used here make this feel a cut
08:26 above many other cars on the market.
08:28 This is a very well sorted interior.
08:31 In the rear cabin here there are loads of positives and one slightly annoying negative.
08:36 Let's start with the positives.
08:38 Thanks to this optional sunroof there's plenty of light in the back of this cabin despite
08:43 having privacy glass all round.
08:45 If there's a bit too much light for you, obviously you can close that up.
08:48 You've also got sun blinds as well.
08:51 Really luxuriously lined door cards here.
08:54 It's lovely alcantara material which actually follows through in all the rest of the cabin
08:59 including the headliner which feels absolutely glorious.
09:03 You've also got a cup holder in the door here which seems like a stroke of genius and you've
09:08 got a vent in the pillar that follows through from the EV6 and the Ioniq 5.
09:12 You've got the vent over here instead of down here.
09:14 So instead of getting very cold or warm shins, it's actually blowing up towards you which
09:20 makes a little bit more sense.
09:22 You've got some nice door pockets down here, two USB A's in the centre console and there's
09:28 also a sizeable cubby underneath those.
09:31 And you can even adjust the passenger seat in this particular car from the rear seat.
09:38 Ideal for those backseat drivers.
09:41 In this centre here you've got another couple of cup holders.
09:44 Don't really know why they're in there to be honest because you've got a cup holder
09:47 here and if say each passenger has got a cup in here, someone sitting in the middle, well
09:54 they can't use these so I'm not really sure why they're there but it's very comfortable
09:58 and very sturdy.
09:59 And life at this stage folks is good.
10:02 Loads of knee room but here comes the downside.
10:06 There's not enough room to put your feet so the floor's obviously slightly higher because
10:10 we've got batteries underneath here so the floor's a bit higher than you would get in
10:13 a standard internal combustion engine car.
10:16 And it does cut into that foot room.
10:18 I mean I've got my feet jammed under this driver's seat at the moment and it's not uncomfortable
10:25 but it does sort of let it down a little bit if I'm being completely honest.
10:31 With all this leg room and all this space and this nice big bright airy feeling, I just
10:35 want a bit more space to put my feet.
10:38 It's a very minor gripe but one that's definitely worth noting.
10:42 When you get behind the wheel of the GV60, even though let's not forget this is a rip
10:47 snorting beast of a car, you've got in excess of 400 horsepower on tap and a 0-62 time of
10:55 just 4 seconds.
10:57 You get into the thing and it's a place of serenity and calm.
11:02 It's just a lovely thing to drive.
11:04 It's so quiet, it's so effortless.
11:07 Now the interesting thing they've done in this car is not only have they increased the
11:11 amount of sound deadening compared to the EV6 and the IONIQ 5, they've also put noise
11:17 cancelling technology into the speakers.
11:20 That's coming in through the speakers to just cut out the exterior noise as much as possible
11:26 and that really does work very very effectively.
11:29 It's an incredibly quiet car to travel down the road in.
11:33 And I'm going over speed bumps here and potholes and manhole covers and everything else and
11:39 I don't know if you're picking it up in the video at all but although you can feel the
11:43 worst of the bumps, despite the fact that we're in a big heavy car, don't forget we've
11:48 got all that battery weight, and the fact that we're sitting on some fairly large wheels
11:54 with not the meatiest tyres in the world, the suspension's really nice.
11:59 Very comfortable car to drive in.
12:02 Now often when you get a car with comfortable suspension it's absolutely awful when you
12:07 try and do any enthusiastic driving with it.
12:10 If you get it down some B roads, if you take it out on the twisties and give it some beans.
12:16 That's not the case in this GV60.
12:18 The chassis's very well sorted and the suspension just seems to sort of seamlessly adapt to
12:25 whatever conditions you throw at it.
12:28 It's a very impressive piece of kit.
12:30 A lot of modern cars can feel slightly numb when it comes to the steering.
12:33 They feel almost too light and you don't get that sense that the steering wheel's necessarily
12:39 completely connected to the wheels because obviously quite often it's not.
12:44 That's certainly not the case in the GV60.
12:46 The steering's got a really nice heft to it.
12:49 It almost feels like steering from a bygone era.
12:53 It feels very well connected.
12:54 You feel completely in tune with the road ahead.
12:58 And it's, I don't know, the whole chassis and the drive of the car feels like reassuring.
13:05 Feels solidly put together.
13:07 Feels like a lot of thought's gone into the way this car drives and that thought has paid
13:12 off folks.
13:13 Now at this stage in the review you might think, oh it's just a luxury car.
13:17 But you are overlooking the fact that we do have in excess of 400 horsepower available
13:22 to us here.
13:24 And under my right thumb is the boost button.
13:27 Now it makes you feel a little bit trigger happy at times because just one little stroke
13:33 of that button makes all hell break loose and it takes a lot of restraint to actually
13:42 drive within the legal limits of the road when you've got that on tap.
13:48 At all times in this video by the way I am driving within the legal limits of the road
13:52 and I don't want, but yeah, it is really quite tempting to press that and have all manner
13:58 of fun.
13:59 Likewise, if you go between the driving modes, you've got eco, comfort, sport, the whole
14:04 characteristic of the car changes.
14:06 The throttle response changes.
14:09 You feel everything sort of stiffen up.
14:11 Even on this car, the seat bolsters even inflate to grip you in the seat more when you go into
14:17 sport mode or into boost mode.
14:19 It's incredibly impressive.
14:21 It's incredibly well engineered and really hats off to Genesis for taking the EV6 and
14:28 the IONIQ 5 platform, which are already very well proven, and really putting their stamp
14:33 on it.
14:34 This car does it all and it does it all in style.
14:37 When you're looking at things that are not so good about this car, I mean it just should
14:42 have wireless car play.
14:43 I don't know why it hasn't.
14:46 It seems like a bit of an oversight and certainly the positioning of those USB sockets to be
14:51 where you have to plug your phone in if you want to use car play or anything just seems
14:55 a little bit daft, possibly feels like a bit of an afterthought almost, which in a car
15:00 that's as well considered as this one is a little bit disappointing, but obviously not
15:05 going to stop me or probably anyone else from actually buying the car.
15:10 And of course, with this extra performance, you lose a tiny bit of range over some of
15:13 the more sedate versions of the vehicle.
15:16 And of course, you've also got a bit less boot space in the GV60 than you have in the
15:21 IONIQ 5 or the EV6.
15:24 But really, when you talk about luxury performance vehicles, regardless of the powertrain, this
15:29 has to be part of the conversation because it's a fantastically good car.
15:34 It really is a great car.
15:36 If any of you are regular viewers of my YouTube channel, you'll know I'm a man who likes a
15:40 bargain.
15:41 I have to say, if I was going for one of these GV60s myself, I would spec it exactly like
15:46 this one.
15:47 And that's to the hill.
15:48 Now, this is a 67 grand car, as I've said a couple of times before, probably.
15:52 Sorry to repeat myself, but it's got all the options thrown at it.
15:56 This one I'm sitting in now is over 75 grand.
16:00 And I can tell you that it's the one you would want to go for.
16:03 In this trim, with this level of spec, with this fantastic sound system, these amazingly
16:09 comfortable seats with this big sunroof, it's a car without compromise.
16:14 And that means it needs a budget without compromise.
16:17 Folks, if you've enjoyed this review, please give it a big thumbs up.
16:21 Please leave a comment and please subscribe to the Men and Motors channel.
16:25 Also, we've talked quite a lot in this video about the EV6 from Kia.
16:29 Well, my good mate, Tom, has just done a review of it on Men and Motors.
16:34 So click that and go check it out right now.
16:37 Thanks for watching.
16:38 I'll see you on the next one.
