00:00 Rescuers on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi are working around the clock to
00:04 try and evacuate thousands of people after a volcano there erupted five times.
00:09 Lava has been spewing out of Mount Ruang and it sent a column of ash high
00:14 into the sky. France 24's Charlie James has the latest for us.
00:18 A terrifying scene as fire and lightning fill the sky. Indonesia's Mount Ruang
00:25 erupted at least five times Wednesday evening spewing volcanic ash about
00:31 70,000 feet into the atmosphere. Local people were evacuating themselves
00:38 because of small rocks spewing from the eruption. People were panicked and they
00:44 scrambled so we will make sure that there is no one left stranded along the
00:49 coastline. The crater continued to emit smoke throughout the day Thursday.
00:54 Residents on the northern side of Sulawesi Island have been ordered to
00:58 stay at least six kilometers away from the mountain. More than 11,000 people
01:03 live in the affected area and are being relocated. Prisoners were evacuated and
01:08 travelers trapped at a nearby airport that temporarily closed due to ash.
01:16 We had already loaded our luggage and checked in our belongings and we waited for
01:19 about an hour only to be informed that our flight was cancelled due to the
01:23 eruption. Ongoing risks from the eruption include the possibility that
01:30 part of the volcano could collapse into the sea and cause a tsunami. Indonesians
01:36 have a recent reminder of that danger. In December 2018 another volcano there
01:41 erupted and collapsed triggering a powerful tsunami that killed more than
01:46 400 people.
01:49 I'm.
