Rakan Muda activities could aid youths by providing better coping mechanisms for their mental health such as outdoor activities, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, referring to the findings of the Malaysian Youth Mental Health Index 2023 launched on Monday (April 22).

00:00 First of all I'm very happy with the findings. I hope this will help all of us
00:06 realign our efforts. Times have changed, our youth are also different from last
00:12 time and so there is a need to depart. If we do not depart from our usual way of
00:18 doing things, we will be catering to youth in the 1990s and no longer the
00:23 youth of today. And so today I'm very happy to see the findings and I just
00:30 want to highlight a few points. When you look at the coping mechanism domain, it
00:36 highlights four methods in how Malaysian youth cope with
00:42 stress management. One, engaging in leisure activities, spending time with family and
00:48 friends, engaging in worship or spiritual practices and spending time on outdoor
00:52 activities. So I'm very very happy that these findings correlate to all our
00:59 Rakan Muda program. Our new gaya hidup, 10 new lifestyles for Rakan Muda
01:05 addresses the needs of our youth today. We have Rakan Lita because today people
01:11 like to race. We have Rakan Digital because today you have eSports and I
01:16 know many parents will argue that eSports is not really a sport but it is a gazetted sport
01:21 and we have to accept the reality and now prepare the coping mechanism for
01:25 them. The other thing, we have the famous big screen program where KBS put up big
01:31 screens nationwide every time that Harimau Melayu is playing and the last
01:37 Korean match, Korea versus Malaysia, half of our stadium national Bukit Jandil
01:43 was full with spectators just watching a big screen. There were no players on the
01:49 field but what Malaysians wanted is the access to recreational facilities like
01:56 this where they can gather together. We have that money, we just need to realign
02:01 based on data and hear from the youth and I hope that we will be successful. I
02:07 hope that next year when IRIS does the same kind of study, the scores among
02:13 orang asli will improve. So this data will save this government a
02:18 lot a lot of money if we all work together. Thank you Dr. Zou for your
02:22 partnership with KBS. We really look forward to many more meaningful
02:27 engagement with other ministries. Thank you.
