00:00 You shot what is without question one of the most remarkable Star Wars sequences ever,
00:06 which is the Vader scene, the hallway scene from Rogue One.
00:10 Did you ever get to go out to a theater and experience an audience of fans witnessing
00:17 that for the first time?
00:19 I did.
00:20 You know, I did.
00:21 Gareth and I and Diego, I think we all hung out on the first night that it came out.
00:27 We all were hopping around the theaters, standing at the back and just watching the experience.
00:34 I think we introduced a couple and then ones that we went in late and just watched.
00:40 And I did, and it was a really interesting experience.
00:44 And I've recounted this story a number of times because when we shot that, because,
00:51 you know, as you know, with that film, there was a number of pickups here and there, which
00:54 there should be with any film that's trying to find its feet like that.
00:57 There needs to be kind of refinements to scenes.
01:01 It needs to be all those things, which there was.
01:04 But that was a super late addition to the film.
01:06 And I remember the sequence we'd shot before that was really good.
01:12 Before that even existed in the world.
01:13 Was really good.
01:14 And I'm not going to talk too much about it because it doesn't matter, actually.
01:17 It's gone.
01:18 And I remember, I think Gareth rang me and said, "Hey, we've got this sequence and it's
01:22 going to end the film."
01:23 And I went, "Oh, that means what we've done is gone, right?"
01:27 And I'm like, "That's such a shame."
01:29 He went, "Yeah, but hear me out.
01:31 This is going to be much better."
01:32 And so I heard him out and I went, "Yeah, baby, that is going to be much better."
01:37 And so this is the point where I remember going like, you know, I'll happily admit defeat
01:42 or happily admit that I'm wrong.
01:45 And I remember my first reaction was 100% wrong.
01:48 Because when we finally got the lighting right, the introduction of Vader, because remember,
01:56 like when he lights a lightsaber in front of him, that should front light him because
02:00 that's what lightsabers do.
02:01 But if you watch carefully, he's silhouetted and it's a total false.
02:06 It's total false lighting.
02:07 It's like lightsaber comes on and then there's a light behind him.
02:11 I don't want to destroy it for the people at home.
02:15 Definitely a cinematographer would complain about that.
02:19 The lighting is wrong as wrong can be.
02:22 It's false and wrong.
02:23 But I remember we did it the correct way first and we just went, "Ugh."
02:29 Like it was like a balloon deflating.
02:32 Believe it or not, Vader can look a little bit weak if you don't shoot him correctly.
02:42 We'd shot him obviously for the film before that and we discovered that, but we'd never
02:46 done the whole reveal before.
02:49 And so when we first did the reveal on set, it was like, "Oh, this is not good.
02:56 This is not what this film deserves."
02:58 And I remember we worked on it for like 10 or 15 minutes and got the levels right.
03:02 And then we shot.
03:04 And I remember the first take that we did it and it worked.
03:06 We both thought, "Oh."
03:07 It was like being five again.
03:10 It was like being five and seeing Vader for the first time in A New Hope, when he comes
03:16 in through the smoke.
03:19 That's how it felt.
03:20 And yes, I'm very happy to have experienced that first time.
