Brennan Armstrong, Will Bettridge, Antonio Clary, Mike Hollins, and Coen King comment on UVA's four-overtime loss to Miami
Transcript
00:00And you're like, okay, good, we're gonna have that all day, or
00:02is it a situation where you're like, here we go again?
00:04No, not, it stinks, right?
00:07I mean, first play of the game, and it kind of dialed up.
00:10We were expecting, we just wanted to take a shot.
00:11We knew we could make big plays.
00:13We were watching the middle of the season,
00:14just hitting on every big play possible against those guys.
00:18Dialed it up, I didn't throw too much in the air, kind of put it on them.
00:22I didn't get a good read on the backside safety.
00:26See if he was rolling over there.
00:28So I thought, hey, I probably should get this ball to him quicker rather than later.
00:32Don't let someone go chase it down with the ball in the air, overshoot him.
00:36But it wasn't, I didn't have that feeling.
00:39And I'm upset with myself, I missed an exit time.
00:42Big play, that's a touchdown, right off the rip.
00:44So, no, it was like, okay, wow, we're gonna have some shots here.
00:50Moved the pocket a little bit, we had a different projection there.
00:52Trying to move the pocket and get me out there, just missed it.
00:56Lavelle's deep ball, did you feel like that was underthrown?
00:59Did you get it where you wanted it and he should finish that play?
01:02How did you look at that one?
01:04It was wide open, so I'm like, shoot, can't repeat itself.
01:08Can't overshoot him there, so I'll just make sure I get him the ball.
01:11And just let him work after, wish we could get in the end zone,
01:14wish I could have thrown a better ball to keep him on the move.
01:17So he doesn't flip his body, get twisted up by somebody.
01:21But for me there, it was just like, hey, don't overshoot him.
01:24I knew as soon as I started the play and saw it, I was like, he's got him.
01:28I mean, there's no one around him, I just cannot miss him.
01:30So just trying to get him the ball there, we caught it, made a great play.
01:34Like I said, I wish I could keep him on the move so he could get in the end zone.
01:38But I'd rather have him catch it, get down to the goal line,
01:41then overthrow him and we're still back there, so.
01:43Can you talk about the multiple overtimes?
01:45It was fun, I really haven't experienced that.
01:48Got into the, what, so we go back and forth once, twice, twice, right?
01:54Twice on field goals.
01:56Yeah, twice on field goals, and then we move into two-point conversions.
01:59Yeah, I think it was the first or second one, I have to watch film again.
02:05But we finally get Wixie one-on-one, the boundary safety,
02:09down, cover on our back, and man coverage, that's the second one.
02:13Yeah, give him a shot.
02:15It was number two is one of their best corners.
02:18Number three is one of our best players.
02:20So give him a shot, bang, bang, play, and that's what happens.
02:24The last one, we're trying to get our back out into our flat quickly,
02:31do the line of scrimmage to hopefully get people tangled up,
02:33because either it was going to be a man or zone.
02:35We're figuring that out as we go, but got tangled up, got some pressure there.
02:39We were just in a five-man protection there, we were on a little blitz.
02:43And then I was just trying to make sure I don't die with the ball,
02:45because you can't die with the ball in those situations.
02:47You gotta at least give someone a shot.
02:49It's all about working back to me, try to give them something high.
02:51Go up there and get, obviously, pushed out of bounds, or
02:53we're working out too far out of bounds there.
02:55But I mean, I guess positives, we battled.
03:00Negatives, shouldn't have been an overtime.
03:03We took care of our business.
03:05We get down to the resident, we gotta score.
03:07Gotta make plays.
03:08I mean, that's just bottom line.
03:09I mean, we just gotta make the plays that are there.
03:12Where's the level-
03:13You've kind of come in and said variations of that after several games.
03:17When you're coming through a week of practice,
03:20you kind of come into a game thinking you've solved that problem.
03:23And then-
03:25Yeah, you just-
03:25The barriers it's had again, is it doubly frustrating now?
03:28Yeah, man, I wanna say it's the same stuff.
03:31It's not like it's just repeating stuff.
03:34And that is kind of frustrating when it comes down to it,
03:36because you try to go into practice and you fix those things.
03:39But when you get out to the game, things are flying, bullets are flying.
03:43And yeah, I mean, then you start to see, really,
03:47if we took that step, and in a sense, we really haven't.
03:50Plays are out there to be made, and we're just not making them quite yet.
03:55And we should be off a two and
03:58a half this little break we had and rolling into these next couple of games.
04:03All we can do is just keep pushing forward.
04:04We got another good opponent with UNC coming in, and get ready for that one.
04:08Brandon, what are you thinking when you're clutching that ankle down on the turf?
04:14Yeah.
04:14How quickly did it take you?
04:16You were in the tent for quite a while.
04:17Yeah, I mean, they were taping me up, getting all that situated.
04:19My left ankle's been a little weird lately.
04:23I mean, it's fine.
04:24But when I got twisted up, thank goodness my cleat kind of fell off,
04:26because if it had got stuck into the ground, yeah, it came off.
04:29So that was kind of, hopefully, but probably a good thing,
04:32and not getting stuck into the ground and getting twisted up on.
04:36At first, it was pretty painful.
04:39As it kind of wore off there, and got to the tent, and we looked at it.
04:44Nice.
04:44They were able to get up and walk.
04:47I was like, yeah, if I can walk, I'm good to go to play.
04:50I was able to scamper out a few times.
04:51It wasn't too bad.
04:54I was like, all right, we're cool.
04:55But it's sore.
04:56I mean, it got rolled up on, and we'll just treat it throughout the week,
04:59and be good to go next week.
05:00What does it seem like things are kind of falling off when you all get into the red
05:03zone right now?
05:05Well, I mean, you know, Miami did a good job with stopping the run.
05:09We kind of felt that first half.
05:11We've made adjustments in the second half of, you know,
05:13let's push the ball down the field.
05:14When we get to the red zone, and it was like the one with LaBelle,
05:18when we were going, you know, towards our locker room, we had a nice little glance
05:22on, boundary safety came down, just trying to give him something.
05:25You know, when you get on the red zone, it's going to be bang, bang, plays.
05:28I mean, there's not much room.
05:30So guys just got to be prepared to make hard catches.
05:32And I was just trying to body him, you know, just get it into his belly
05:35somewhere.
05:35And so, because I know there's somebody going to be coming, getting ready to hit
05:38him, either it's a corner or somebody else.
05:39So, just make him plays when it's tough.
05:44I mean, those plays are tough.
05:47Other than that, I mean, we just got to make those plays.
05:49I mean, I don't really have any other words besides, you know,
05:53we get opportunities and we just got to make them.
05:55Glad you're being sent back out there time and time again for the overtime.
05:58Yeah, I mean, that's how I do my job.
06:01You know, I kept thinking I was going to come down to a kick, you know,
06:05kind of being Andy Rich back and forth.
06:07So, you know, I just had to stay ready, stay close to the net,
06:10because those last two in overtime were a minute apart.
06:13I don't even know, but definitely had to stay ready, keep my legs warm.
06:16For you to have a game like this after what happened in Atlanta for you,
06:19just kind of, what was that like for your confidence?
06:22Yeah, I mean, I definitely, it was definitely a bounce back week.
06:25I focused even harder this week.
06:28You know, I kind of put that game beside me.
06:30You know, I didn't want to, that's what people thought of me.
06:32And I kind of just worked hard, the whole team worked hard this week.
06:35You know, we put that, we won that last game against Georgia Tech,
06:38but it wasn't how we wanted to play it.
06:39And this whole week we worked hard and just grinded and, you know,
06:42didn't get the outcome we wanted today.
06:44But again, put it behind us and we got the final next week.
06:47So, just got to keep working.
06:49How great, talking about the secondary, how easy,
06:52I mean, obviously it's a tough loss,
06:53but when it comes to the defense here for the secondary,
06:56what did Anthony and Petrel do on the outside for you as a city?
06:59Just tell me how well they've been in conference so far this year.
07:02It's great, you know,
07:03knowing that you have two shut down cornerbacks,
07:05it kind of helps you, because you know that,
07:08you know that they're handling their business on the outside.
07:11So there's going to be a lot of tips and overthrows.
07:14As a safety, you know, coach talks about it all the time,
07:15as a safety, you know, you got to get those tips and overthrows.
07:18So, but yeah, it's definitely a comforter thing,
07:21knowing that you have two locked down corners on the outside
07:22and then you can focus on, you know, tight ends,
07:24as a safety, the runs, the slot receivers and stuff like that.
07:27Get frustrated.
07:28It is like a knee slapper, but a big play is a big play.
07:33And I expected to, you know, push it in,
07:37but obviously we didn't.
07:38We have some things to work on.
07:40Executing the red zone is going to be maybe high on our,
07:45you know, our practice sheet this week,
07:47but it's good, good to know.
07:49We know what we can do.
07:51We know we're an explosive offense.
07:52We know we can make a big play just like that.
07:55We just have to execute, punch it in at the end.
07:59The first offensive snap of the game for you guys,
08:02you have Wicks behind the defense.
08:03Brennan just overthrows him.
08:04Is that a good sign?
08:06Like, okay, it's there, or is that like,
08:07oh, here we go again?
08:08Oh, that was a great time for us.
08:12Never a bad sign, because we know BA,
08:13and we don't miss twice,
08:15and we know Tate can get open again.
08:17So that was a great sign for us.
08:20It let us know that we can get open.
08:22We knew we could win one-on-one,
08:24and we knew BA would, you know, make that throw next time.
08:28Did you nag the coaches for more touches
08:32after the long play down the sideline?
08:34Of course not. I just let the coaches do what they want.
08:37I mean, do what they think is best for the team in the moment.
08:40I knew that I would be ready, like I was that play,
08:44to, you know, execute and do my best when my number's called.
08:48That's just the role that I have,
08:50and that's the role that I will continue to play.
08:52How would you describe it right now?
08:55It's more so, I think it's just wishing
08:57that we had a few plays back.
08:59Like they say, every play comes down
09:01to someone doing their job,
09:03and, you know, Coach E said they didn't really beat us.
09:07I think that we beat ourselves in the plays that they made.
09:10The plays that we didn't make, we also beat ourselves,
09:13and I think it just comes down to, you know,
09:14taking it one rep at a time,
09:16really focusing in on what your job is in that time,
09:19and, you know, just executing at the highest level
09:21possible in every play.
09:22How much pressure is there on the defense
09:24when the offense just seemingly
09:26just can't get it across the goal line today?
09:28Yeah, it's a lot of pressure.
09:31Coach Rudd, and especially Coach Rudd and Coach Cox,
09:35really put a lot of pressure on us in practice,
09:37so, you know, we're built for these moments, I think,
09:39and, you know, we have that mindset.
09:42I'm just proud to have guys around me like Nick,
09:44AJ, Jameer, Pintrell, Antonio,
09:47all these guys that bring that same mindset of,
09:50you know, it's one play at a time,
09:52I'm not too sure how many plays we play,
09:54but the last play is the same as the first play,
09:56the second play, it's all the same.
