00:00 - Okay guys, I gave you instructions in the dressing room.
00:05 I won't let you work all this over here, okay?
00:08 It's legal.
00:09 Give me a good clean fight, okay?
00:10 Touch him up.
00:11 - Just about to get underway.
00:14 This bout's scheduled for eight rounds,
00:16 and Ray, I want to bring up something you mentioned.
00:17 It's a very good point about Jalen Renaud,
00:19 who has been very active on social media
00:21 calling out a lot of these New England fighters,
00:22 and we'd love to see it.
00:23 Of course, like you said,
00:24 you want to see it backed up in the ring.
00:26 Renaud was supposed to fight Casey Streeter
00:28 back in, I think, 2023 in the summer.
00:31 That fight ended up getting scrapped due to injury,
00:33 so that layoff extended.
00:35 But again, you're right.
00:36 He has called out almost anybody in his weight class
00:38 in this area and wants to conquer New England
00:41 before prohibitively stepping up to the next level.
00:44 We'll see if that starts here tonight.
00:45 - And that's what you want these fighters to do, you know?
00:47 I want to beat my own backyard before I call anybody out.
00:51 And I love that he's been calling out these fighters,
00:53 but like I've been telling everybody,
00:54 if you go and call, you know, everyone says,
00:56 "Well, I'm not fighting because this guy won't fight me."
00:58 There's plenty of other fighters out there.
01:00 So why haven't you fought?
01:01 I think this round here, both fighters are going to try
01:04 to make their point right away.
01:06 They don't like each other.
01:07 - There seems to be some bad blood that's been brewing,
01:10 and a lot of it probably is from the call-out
01:12 in previous months, and of course, Jalen Renaud.
01:14 As you mentioned too, Ray,
01:15 and this is something that I almost had slipped my mind,
01:18 that fighting a lot heavier than we're used to seeing.
01:20 He came in at 152.
01:21 The bout was scheduled or contracted at 154,
01:24 but typically he's been at 147,
01:26 and probably capable of even fighting lower than that
01:28 in the past, so you wonder if it's a conditioning thing
01:31 or if it's just an opportunity that he sees,
01:33 and so here he is taking it.
01:35 - Ovi is, you know, ready for this fight here.
01:39 Castro, you know, been coming over,
01:41 catching him already two times, I saw,
01:43 with an overhand right.
01:45 Renaud, so, you know, he's got a good jab,
01:48 but he's keeping it out there.
01:50 Castro just coming right over the top of it.
01:52 - It's such a big fight for both fighters
01:54 for different reasons.
01:55 Jalen Renaud fighting in memory of his late father,
01:57 John Renaud, who brought him up from the start,
02:00 introduced him to boxing.
02:02 A big figurehead in his corner for so many years.
02:05 It's a tough loss, no question about that.
02:07 - Definitely, you know, that's the big thing
02:08 in the corner too, you know,
02:09 hearing a different voice, you're always,
02:11 when you're in doubt, you got your father there,
02:13 the guy who brought you to be there,
02:15 for him not to be there, you know.
02:17 Ovi, you know, he pulls it out and wins for him.
02:21 - And of course, as we mentioned, Castro,
02:23 the last time, and which was also the first time
02:26 he fought for CS, took a tough loss
02:28 against Mr. Luis Charles,
02:29 got knocked out of Mohegan Sun.
02:31 That was the first loss of his career.
02:33 He's responded since then with two wins,
02:35 and trying to get back again in the win column
02:37 and make it three in a row.
02:38 Another very tough fight, and then another step up,
02:40 measuring stick type fight, really, for both guys.
02:44 One of the familiar faces you will see
02:47 in Renaud's corner is Hector Rosario,
02:49 who they brought in, really, when Renaud was younger,
02:52 so he's been with him for quite some time,
02:53 so there is at least one very familiar voice there.
02:56 - Yes, and a lot of people don't know this,
02:58 Hector Rosario beat me in the images.
03:00 - No kidding.
03:01 - He's the first guy to honestly not just beat me,
03:03 stalked me, wow.
03:05 My first and only stalk.
03:07 - Nice right hand there by Castro.
03:08 Learn something new every night here, right?
03:10 - Yes.
03:11 - I was gonna say.
03:12 This one's scheduled for eight.
03:13 A super well-to-weight division,
03:15 Jalen Renaud and the, well, both fighters, really,
03:17 in the black and red trunks.
03:19 We'll say Castro's got the fur-lined trunks.
03:22 Final seconds here.
03:24 Good opening round, too, for both fighters,
03:28 but Castro looking sharp, right?
03:30 I just see a lot, a much more confident fighter
03:32 than I saw in that fight a couple years ago.
03:34 Looks like a different fighter to me.
03:35 - Both fights, you know, both fighters,
03:38 I thought would come out throwing punches,
03:40 but both fighters this first round was patient, calm,
03:43 seeing what the other one got.
03:45 I gave that round there to Renaud,
03:47 but very close.
03:49 He could've went to either way.
03:51 I gave it to Renaud because he stood him out
03:53 on the outside with that jab,
03:55 as Castro was trying to get his way in.
03:57 He caught him a couple times in the opening right at first,
03:59 but as the round was going on,
04:01 Renaud picked it up with that jab and kept him outside.
04:04 - Well, that's what's interesting.
04:05 You and I felt the same way about the opening fight.
04:07 There were some close rounds there
04:09 that we weren't sure which way they would go,
04:11 and clearly the judges had that same conflict.
04:14 When you have a 39-37 in one direction,
04:17 and then a 39-37 in the opposite direction,
04:20 it's not a case of necessarily seeing
04:22 an entirely different fight,
04:23 but just seeing it from a different perspective.
04:25 So that's what you gotta really consider with judges
04:27 in determining how a fight may go.
04:29 It's impossible to know as a fighter.
04:30 You just have to go in there basically
04:32 and execute your game plan.
04:33 Round two underway.
04:35 Once again, Michael Parente and Ray Oliveira
04:37 joining you ringside on Swear of Combat,
04:40 CES Boxing Homecoming.
04:43 - An appropriate title here.
04:44 The first time we've been back here at Bally's
04:46 for pro boxing since November of 2022,
04:49 so it's been a long time coming.
04:51 - I love the fights here.
04:53 It's not a bad seat.
04:56 Every seat around here is beautiful.
04:58 You can sit in the front, you can sit in the back,
05:00 and it seems like you're in front.
05:02 - It's a great atmosphere,
05:03 this place, when it opened in 2008,
05:05 boxing was immediately a staple.
05:07 Peter Manfredo Jr., Jason "Big Six" Estrada,
05:10 Matt Godfrey, so many legends in New England
05:13 have fought in this ring.
05:15 Gary Bolletto fought in this ring.
05:17 - Yes.
05:18 - I mean, you think back how far back it goes
05:20 and the history and the lineage here is incredible.
05:24 Perhaps tonight you see some of the great stars
05:26 of the present and perhaps the future of this sport
05:28 as well in this ring.
05:31 - I'd say both fighters are still feeling out each other.
05:35 Reynaldo's so beautifully putting that jab out,
05:37 and every time Castro comes in with that right hand,
05:39 he steps back and comes back with his own right hand.
05:42 And then sometimes Castro is working his jab in
05:45 and comes with either that overhand right and left hook.
05:49 - Nice right hand there. - Right there.
05:50 - Yep, there it is.
05:52 - He gets close to that jab
05:53 and he pops that right hand over the top.
05:56 Naso's keeping that left hand very low.
06:06 That's why he's getting caught with that overhand right.
06:09 Look at that peekaboo defense.
06:13 Looks a little bit like the ring.
06:15 - It certainly looks the part.
06:20 You can see why Chuck Searns took an interest in him
06:22 at a younger age,
06:23 and they really want to see where this is going to go.
06:26 - You can look at Castro and see,
06:28 he's got them wide shoulders, good head movement,
06:32 hands up high and strong.
06:35 - And what we didn't even mention,
06:36 he's only 26 years old. - Oh, okay.
06:38 - I mean, imagine 12 pro fights at 26 is a very good pace.
06:42 - Yes.
06:43 11 wins, 8 knockouts.
06:45 - Right, and a similar pace to Alejandro Paulino,
06:47 who we'll see in the main event,
06:48 who's also had, and he's had a few more,
06:50 but it's good to see these fighters busy at this age.
06:53 When you start to get toward the late 20s range,
06:55 you've got a good 15, 16 fights on your belt.
06:57 It's a little bit easier to turn that corner
06:59 and take that next step forward.
07:00 Again, that right hand.
07:02 - He's finding a home for that.
07:04 - Let's go!
07:05 - Come on, David!
07:06 - Let's go!
07:07 - He's very patient.
07:08 He's coming in, he's not jumping in.
07:10 He's coming in off that jab, Castro.
07:12 He's putting that jab out
07:13 and then popping that right hand over the top.
07:16 That left hook also just,
07:18 that's what's setting up that right hand, the left hook.
07:21 - Final eight seconds here of round number two.
07:23 Again, the nice hook there by Castro,
07:25 catching Renaud on the way in.
07:28 Much better round here for Castro.
07:29 We've got two in the books.
07:30 Don't go anywhere.
07:31 We're gonna bring you more on Swerve Combat.
07:34 (upbeat music)
07:39 (upbeat music)
07:44 (upbeat music)
07:49 (upbeat music)
07:54 (upbeat music)
07:59 (upbeat music)
08:04 (upbeat music)
08:09 (upbeat music)
08:14 (upbeat music)
08:19 (upbeat music)
08:24 (upbeat music)
08:29 (upbeat music)
08:32 - Two ballies, Twin River Lincoln,
08:34 Michael Parenti and Sucre Ray Oliveira
08:36 bringing you all the action here on Swerve Combat.
08:38 You're watching the second of five bouts tonight.
08:40 Jalen Renaud taking on Josniel Castro
08:43 in the eight round bout.
08:44 This is round number three,
08:46 the second bout of the evening.
08:47 So far so good, Ray.
08:48 Very evenly matched bout.
08:51 - Definitely is.
08:52 You know, Castro seemed like he came out
08:54 with a little bit more emphasis this round.
08:55 I think he's picked up on Renaud's pace.
09:00 Renaud is, you know, he wants to come forward.
09:03 He should be the boxer.
09:04 Castro wants that to happen.
09:06 He wants him to stand there and fight him.
09:09 - And that's what you want to see, Ray, right?
09:10 From a fighter.
09:11 If you're in Castro's corner,
09:12 you want to see him have that ability
09:13 to pick up on a tendency maybe,
09:14 or something that Renaud is doing
09:16 that if it's repetitive, you can attack it.
09:18 - Exactly.
09:19 You know, I tell my fighters all the time,
09:20 you know, my amateur boxers,
09:22 let me be the GPS you drive.
09:25 - Nice.
09:26 - You ain't going to get to your spot
09:27 unless you listen to the GPS.
09:29 And it looks like Castro is listening
09:31 to the GPS, which is his corner.
09:33 You know, he's patient.
09:35 He's walking him down, not just with his head.
09:39 He's walking him down with that punch.
09:40 He's coming off that left hook and jab
09:42 and setting up everything.
09:43 - Well, you're right, Ray.
09:44 He's been very patient.
09:45 Good counter puncher Castro is.
09:49 I think Renaud--
09:50 Oh, there's a nice right hand again.
09:54 - He's definitely finding a home for that open hand right.
09:57 - I think Renaud wants to be the aggressive,
09:59 but it's harder to do that when you're facing
10:01 a very good counter puncher in Castro.
10:04 - Renaud shouldn't be the aggressor.
10:07 I mean, he has 11 wins.
10:09 I mean, I'm sorry, 9 wins, but 3 knockouts.
10:12 And, you know, everybody's knockouts come early in their careers.
10:15 They're going to knock out everyone.
10:17 That's the new thing now.
10:18 Everybody wants to be an MMA fighter
10:19 and go for that big bang.
10:21 It's boxing.
10:25 - There is that pressure, right,
10:27 to close the show out when you're at home
10:29 or a big fight in front of your home
10:31 to send everybody home happy.
10:32 But you're right, Ray.
10:33 You've got to get the victory.
10:34 The knockouts, you and I talk about this all the time.
10:36 It's about setting up a knockout, building toward it.
10:41 And you wonder if that's a problem
10:42 where the sport is being taught at a lower level.
10:45 - I believe, you know, my opinion,
10:47 I think it is being taught at a lower level.
10:49 I train a bunch of amateurs,
10:51 and I had a question on Facebook.
10:54 Do you train a pro or amateur differently?
10:56 And somebody said, "Yes, you do."
10:59 I'm like, "How?"
11:00 You know, we've got to teach the basics to these amateurs.
11:03 We've got to put the punches down the pipe.
11:06 These combinations, landing combinations,
11:08 don't come out.
11:09 You just throw bombs.
11:10 You're not going to knock out everybody with headgear
11:12 in the big amateur gloves.
11:15 - A lot easier said than done.
11:20 Now to Castro again.
11:21 Final 10 seconds here, round number three.
11:24 [bell ringing]
11:31 All right, there's the bell.
11:32 Ray, how do you see it so far?
11:33 - I definitely get that round to Castro.
11:35 He was calling the punches.
11:36 He was doing his game plan.
11:38 He stayed to his game plan and doing what he wanted to do.
11:41 When Reynoso was trying to stay there and let's rubble.
11:44 No, you don't want that.
11:45 Get in your toes and I'll box him.
11:47 You're the bigger and taller guy.
11:50 - And again, you see Hector Rosario in Renaud's corner.
11:53 Been there for a long time and has been one of those voices
11:56 that Renaud has been able to lean on through the years.
11:58 Of course, his father no longer with us,
12:00 so that obviously has an impact.
12:02 And you see Kendrick Ball Sr.
12:04 in addition to Chuck Stearns in the corner of Joss Neal Castro.
12:07 Kendrick Ball has trained his own son,
12:09 Kendrick Ball Jr., for many pro fights here at Bally's,
12:12 and he was the one that brought Castro to Chuck Stearns.
12:16 Chuck took an immediate leg into him,
12:18 and here we are now at 11-1 with eight knockouts.
12:20 And again, we just keep hopping on the fact that
12:22 this is a very big crossroads fight for both guys.
12:25 Castro wants to keep that win streak going
12:27 and fully get that loss kind of out of the back of his mind,
12:30 which in most fights is probably after winning two
12:32 to forget about it, but it's always kind of lingering there.
12:34 And the further you can get away from that, the better.
12:37 - Yeah, I think this fight here is going to be a range of condition.
12:41 I haven't seen either fighter go eight rounds yet,
12:44 so it's going to be a thing of condition.
12:46 Who's going to be more conditioned to throw their punches
12:49 and do what they want to do?
12:51 - As Ray mentioned, this one is scheduled for eight,
12:53 so we're at the halfway point, at least at the end of this round,
12:55 if we get there, and Castro has--
12:57 and both Renato have only gone six,
12:59 they've only been scheduled for six,
13:01 so it is new territory if we get to that point.
13:04 And I'm always fascinated by the level of conditioning.
13:07 We know guys going there in spar 10, 12 rounds
13:09 and certainly prepped for this,
13:11 but of course it's different when the bell rings
13:13 and the fighter is really out there trying to get at you.
13:15 - It's definitely different.
13:17 I remember a guy who said, "Oh, I'm going to 10,"
13:21 his first 10 rounds, he's fight like 20 rounds in the gym.
13:24 I see you do 10, I say, "It's a lot different
13:26 "than 10 in front of a crowd."
13:28 - That's another point, too.
13:30 - After the fight, he told me, "I was dead at the fourth round."
13:33 [laughter]
13:35 - Good left hook there by Renato.
13:44 - Renato's coming out, and he's pressuring.
13:47 You know, prove me wrong.
13:49 I think he should be on his toes.
13:52 Castro's going to want him to be there
13:54 just so he can punch, but he's got to let them hands go.
13:56 Castro, he's holding back those hands.
13:58 I think he's looking for that big shot.
14:01 - I agree. I think he's had success
14:03 early in this fight counterpunching,
14:05 so perhaps now he's leaning more toward it and looking for it.
14:08 And that can take you out of the game plan, too, can't it?
14:10 - Yeah, exactly. He wants to keep the game plan.
14:12 That's what my fighter says all the time.
14:14 Don't fix what ain't broken.
14:16 If your jab's landed, keep that jab going.
14:18 Why go to something else?
14:20 Add something to it. Don't take it away.
14:23 - One minute to go here in round number four.
14:30 This one's scheduled for eight in the well-to-weight--
14:32 super well-to-weight division, Ryder.
14:35 - Renato's definitely winning this round so far.
14:38 He's walking Castro down,
14:41 and that's where Castro's backing up.
14:43 He's putting his punches in combinations.
14:45 He's not throwing one punch anymore.
14:47 He's putting in three to four punch combinations.
14:50 - That's a good point, Ray. You wonder if Renato's
14:52 starting to pick up some confidence a bit here.
14:54 On the flip side, is Castro just waiting
14:56 for that perfect opportunity a little too much,
14:58 and has that tempered his aggressiveness?
15:01 - Each fighter's playing chess here.
15:04 There will come a time, going eight rounds,
15:07 they start playing chess, and one of these rounds,
15:10 there's only two rounds, not one round after another.
15:13 Castro's there. He's waiting.
15:18 Before, he was walking in with that jab.
15:20 He's backing up and waiting for Renato
15:22 to come forward and counter it.
15:24 - That's exactly what it is.
15:26 Now you see Renato again letting his hands go.
15:28 Two-three punch combo. Much better round here for Renato.
15:31 He catches one a little bit on the way in there
15:33 at the final bell, but again, we're seeing some improvement now,
15:36 and perhaps we're seeing the confidence pick up for Renato.
15:38 - Yeah, every now and then, that round there,
15:40 he was being the aggressor, but Castro was backing up on him
15:44 and was waiting to counterpunch.
15:47 Instead of using that jab to counter off your jab, Castro,
15:51 don't wait for Renato to come in.
15:53 Renato's playing three punches.
15:55 He was jumping in, but coming in off that jab,
15:57 his own jab, and laying his own confidence.
16:00 - Well, it's going to be very interesting to see here,
16:02 now that we've reached the halfway point of the fight.
16:04 I think both corners have had enough time
16:06 to see how this fight could go,
16:08 or at least what the other side can bring to the table.
16:11 So now I think this is the time where you want to make that adjustment
16:13 midway through and maybe turn up the pressure a little bit.
16:16 I think if your Castro's cornered, like you said, Ray,
16:18 you want to see a little bit more aggressiveness there.
16:20 - I definitely want to see a little bit more aggressiveness on Castro.
16:23 I want calm aggression. I don't want him to rush in on him.
16:25 He was doing calm aggression.
16:27 He was working in with his jab, coming with the right hand,
16:29 using his hook, then after his hook, come back with the right hand,
16:33 because Renato was the one waiting,
16:35 but Renato, his corner adjusted.
16:37 He said, "Look, we're going to be aggressive.
16:39 We've got to be aggressive by landing three, four punches.
16:42 We ain't going to be aggressive with one punch."
16:44 - Round number five underway.
16:46 Once again, you're watching us on Swerve Combat.
16:48 Here comes Jailer Renato again, letting his hands go.
16:51 Two-three punch combo.
16:53 Right back to that stiff left jab.
16:55 Nice left hook by Renato.
16:57 - That's what he's going to get back to, Castro.
16:59 He's going to come up with that left hook.
17:01 - Good early action here in round five on Swerve Combat.
17:04 Michael Parente and Sucre Ray Oliveira with you all night.
17:08 Renato, the black and gold trunks,
17:10 and Castro with the fur lining down the side.
17:13 - See, Renato, the rounds that I had him losing,
17:20 what he was doing is he was waiting for Castro to come in,
17:25 and he was stepping back.
17:27 It gave Castro time to counter.
17:29 Now, as soon as Castro comes in, he's standing his ground, Renato,
17:33 so he's coming back with three punch combos right there.
17:36 Again, he's still coming back with his own combinations.
17:38 He's not backing up.
17:39 He's standing his ground and letting his hands go.
17:41 - He's definitely been busier,
17:42 and you wonder how that influences judges.
17:44 Sometimes you and I sit here, and we look,
17:46 and we try to measure which punches are more impactful,
17:49 but some judges look at volume, and that's a big answer for it.
17:52 - Yeah. Volume--
17:54 Everybody knows I threw volume.
17:56 It didn't help me a lot of times.
17:58 - Right. [laughs]
18:00 You said volume records.
18:02 - Yeah. [laughs]
18:04 He's throwing more volume now,
18:06 but he's snapping Castro's head back.
18:08 He's putting the weight into his shoulders and his hips.
18:12 - Castro looks like he's trying to charge in a little more
18:15 than we saw in rounds three and four, to his credit.
18:17 Maybe not enough yet, but it's there,
18:19 and we know he has it in him.
18:21 You wonder if it's a pacing issue too,
18:23 both fighters knowing it's scheduled for eight.
18:25 It's a different game.
18:27 But there's a line between pacing and then just--
18:29 - Yes. - Right?
18:30 - Sitting back and not being aggressive.
18:32 - When you stop pacing yourself, you also loosen rounds.
18:34 - Yes.
18:36 One minute to go here in round five.
18:38 Again, we're scheduled for eight.
18:40 Nice combo there by Castro.
18:42 - See, the person who's using three, four punch combinations.
18:45 - That's really the theme here, is just the volume
18:48 and who brings it a little bit more than the other fighter.
18:51 - See, Castro is on his toes.
18:57 I don't like that. I like to sit down.
18:59 It's like that Roberto Duran you were doing.
19:01 You don't sit down and dance with your shoulders.
19:04 Not with your feet.
19:06 Reynoso's doing that strong jab.
19:13 He's standing his ground, and he's backing up with that strong jab.
19:16 There he goes.
19:22 And now he's walking him down and letting him punch his throat.
19:25 That's when Alfon wants to keep on those ropes.
19:27 - He's going to circle, make him backpedal.
19:29 And there goes Renat again, charging in here in the final ten seconds of round five.
19:33 Good action so far.
19:35 It's been a very close fight.
19:37 Looking forward to seeing how the rest of this plays out.
19:39 We're going to toss the break.

20:29 - Welcome back to Valley's Twin River Lincoln.
20:34 Thank you for joining us on Swerve Combat.
20:36 Michael Parenti and Sucor Ray Oliveira
20:39 bringing you the second of five bouts here at CES Homecoming.
20:42 Jalen Renat taking on Josniel Castro.
20:44 We're just about starting round six.
20:47 Very close fight, Ray.
20:49 - Definitely is a close fight.
20:51 That last round there, I gave that to Jalen.
20:53 I thought his game plan was, in his plan to switch it up,
20:57 was to sit there and just throw out combinations.
21:00 - Seems like, and again it's a seems like thing,
21:03 that the middle rounds have been better for Renat.
21:05 I thought Castro got off to a better start.
21:07 And I feel like Renat has made better adjustments.
21:10 Is that accurate?
21:11 - Yeah, definitely.
21:12 Renat's always making adjustments.
21:13 As long as he's making adjustments,
21:15 he's winning the better rounds.
21:16 And also, you know, he fooled me.
21:19 Jalen Renat looks like he's in shape.
21:22 - Yeah.
21:23 We weren't sure because of the weight, Renat.
21:24 I know in the past there's been a stickler
21:26 about fighting at 147 and not wanting to fight heavier.
21:29 Running the risk of these 154s blowing up to 165 the next night.
21:34 Where he's still at 148, 149.
21:36 You can understand that.
21:37 But here he is at 54.
21:40 Both guys came in at 52.
21:42 So I think the concern or the lack thereof
21:44 was that Castro was gonna blow up
21:46 and be a glorified middleweight on fight night,
21:49 which isn't the case.
21:51 Renat's held his own here
21:52 as we get halfway through round six.
21:54 He's looked very good in these middle rounds.
21:56 - Usually you see Renat on his toes in boxing.
21:59 You know, he came out here sitting down.
22:02 - Yeah.
22:03 - Sitting down and walking down his own opponent.
22:09 - That's a little short left there by Castro.
22:11 But you wanna see more of it
22:14 and you wanna see him follow up with two or three more.
22:16 - I don't like seeing Castro on his toes.
22:18 He's on his toes.
22:19 He's vulnerable for an also.
22:21 He's just walking him right down.
22:23 - Bit of a hint right there by Castro.
22:32 Trying to be a little more aggressive here, Ray.
22:34 Maybe he's taking your advice from the side here.
22:36 - Well, it's weird.
22:37 It's like the person who jumps on his toes
22:40 is the one that gets hit.
22:42 The one who walks them down
22:44 and sits on his base and comes forward
22:46 is the one who's laying the combinations.
22:48 - Just under a minute to go in round six.
22:50 Renat and Castro putting on a pretty good show here
22:53 in the second bout.
22:55 - I keep calling Renat, but no, it's Renat.
23:01 - Oh my God.
23:02 See, combinations.
23:11 The guy who, the person who throws one punch
23:14 will get connected
23:15 to the other person who throws three, four punches.
23:18 - It seems like such a simple thing,
23:20 but of course much different when the bell rings
23:22 and remembering the game plan,
23:24 but also being able to execute it.
23:26 - That's why the corner has been sometimes verbal on that.
23:30 It's not even a bunch of directions,
23:32 but more verbal on let's stick to the game plan.
23:35 What is the game plan?
23:37 - There's the bell for round six.
23:40 So Ray, in a sense,
23:41 when you're talking about working it
23:43 from a corner man perspective,
23:44 which you've done so many times in your career,
23:46 is it safe to say that sometimes you have to remind a fighter
23:49 to just stick to the basics?
23:50 - Yes.
23:51 They fall off the plan.
23:53 Just like I said, with this for the GPS,
23:56 we always think, ah, the GPS is wrong.
23:59 I'm gonna go this way.
24:01 It's gonna be traffic.
24:02 - I know the way.
24:03 - Yeah, the GPS isn't wrong.
24:05 The other person in there taking the punches.
24:08 That last round here was a tough round.
24:11 Each fighter was switching up every 30 seconds.
24:14 Ronaldo would have three punch combination.
24:17 Ronaldo would not.
24:19 And Castro would have three punch combination.
24:21 I would have to give that round,
24:23 in my belief, probably to Castro
24:26 because I thought he'd land much more stronger punches.
24:30 - Well, we have six rounds in the book,
24:33 so it's hard to tell how this is being scored thus far.
24:35 But perhaps Ronaldo has a slim lead
24:37 and maybe could do more here in these next two rounds
24:40 to either cinch the fight, or perhaps he's behind.
24:43 Again, we don't really know.
24:44 - I have right now three-three.
24:46 - Could be.
24:47 - These last two rounds, I say, could call the fight.
24:50 - These could be what you would call
24:51 the championship rounds, right?
24:52 Come down to the final six minutes of the fight.
24:54 - The good thing would be if we get another draw.
24:56 We get another match.
24:57 - We get another matchup.
24:58 You get another rematch.
24:59 That's the quality of matchmaking
25:01 that CES brings to the table with every fight.
25:04 These are well thought of, evenly matched bouts.
25:07 You saw that in the opener.
25:08 You're seeing it again here with Castro and Renard.
25:12 - Renard's right eye is a little swollen,
25:16 almost closed there.
25:18 Could that eye help Castro,
25:21 who will be walking in, throwing that left hook?
25:25 - I feel like, Ray, while Renard has been aggressive,
25:27 he's also been careful, right?
25:28 There's a way to be aggressive without being reckless.
25:31 - Yes, that's why I call it calm aggression.
25:33 I tell all my fighters, be aggressive.
25:35 But calm aggression means just don't rush it.
25:38 - Right.
25:39 - Come in with that jag.
25:40 Come in dancing with your shoulders.
25:43 - Almost halfway through round seven.
25:49 Again, we're scheduled for eight.
25:51 Renard in the black and red trunks
25:53 and Castro in the black and red with the gray fur trim.
25:57 Both fighters trying to launch a big right there.
25:59 Both missed just slightly.
26:01 - Castro definitely laying in that left hook
26:03 on Renard's right eye.
26:05 - You're right.
26:06 It's been swollen up a little bit on that side for Renard.
26:08 - Yes, if Castro keeps going to his left
26:11 and just throw off that left hook,
26:13 and that right hand can come right over the top of it,
26:15 Renard keeps dropping that left.
26:18 Even though it's working for him there,
26:21 these guys got to pick up that shoulder.
26:23 - There it is.
26:24 Castro picking up the pace here a little bit
26:25 in these closing seconds of round seven.
26:28 And you wonder if his corner is instructed him by saying
26:32 maybe you fall into a little bit of a lull
26:34 in those middle rounds,
26:35 and now it's time to put the foot on the pedal again.
26:37 Show that conditioning that you've worked for.
26:40 - This is Castro's weight class.
26:43 He fought this weight class.
26:45 Renard is moving up.
26:47 We don't know if he can carry this weight class.
26:49 Is he tall? Yeah.
26:51 Does he look like he should be in this weight class?
26:53 Yeah. Let him prove it to me.
26:55 - It's a very interesting dynamic,
26:57 'cause he could be a very fitting 154 or a taller 147.
27:02 - Yes.
27:03 - And it just comes down to where you're comfortable.
27:05 Can you make the weight over the course of time?
27:07 And you know how that goes, right?
27:08 As fighters get older, they tend to move up in weight.
27:11 - A lot of fighters think, you know,
27:15 "I walk around 180, so I probably could fight 165."
27:20 Nah, it's not--
27:21 Walking around and training, two different things.
27:23 - Yeah, exactly.
27:25 Final 15 seconds here of round seven.
27:27 Jalen Renard and Josniel Castro.
27:30 Very good chest match bout.
27:35 And a very close one, and again, Ray,
27:39 another very close round here.
27:41 How do you see this one?
27:42 - I saw this round here for Castro.
27:44 He did what he wanted to do.
27:47 Which surprised, again, he was on his toes,
27:49 but he was popping in and sitting on his toes.
27:51 Yes, he was on his toes, but every time he came in
27:53 and sat down, he was throwing three punch combinations.
27:57 And Renard, I think that, you know,
28:01 that right eye being closed is causing a problem
28:04 in him to see now.
28:06 - And that is one of those factors
28:09 that a lot of people don't consider
28:11 when thinking about a fight as it progresses.
28:13 It may not look bad, it may not be bloody or bleeding,
28:16 but if that eye is closed, your line of sight is off,
28:18 it can change the entire outcome of the fight.
28:20 It certainly can change your approach.
28:22 Right, you feel it.
28:23 - You definitely feel that eye swollen, you know,
28:25 every time it gets hit.
28:26 It's not hurting, 'cause your adrenaline's flowing,
28:28 but you can feel it closing up on you.
28:31 - Here we go, eighth and final round
28:38 of this super welterweight battle
28:40 between Josniel Castro and Jalen Renard.
28:42 A very entertaining fight.
28:44 Both sides, I would say,
28:45 have had their moments in this bout.
28:48 - This fight definitely been a chess match.
28:50 One of the best chess matches I've seen so far today.
28:53 You know, let's see if Renard could work
28:57 his combinations coming in,
28:59 sit his ground, and if Castro, you know,
29:02 either or, he won the last round
29:05 doing something I didn't think he should do,
29:07 he shut my mouth.
29:09 - You know, and sometimes, Ray,
29:10 the approach in that final round
29:12 can tell you where a fighter thinks he is in the fight.
29:15 They come out super aggressive,
29:16 perhaps they feel they're behind, and maybe not.
29:18 You know, if a fighter feels he hasn't won,
29:20 which is always dangerous,
29:21 it can certainly change the perspective,
29:24 but both fighters look very aggressive here
29:26 at the beginning of this eighth round,
29:27 and perhaps an opportunity to,
29:29 if you steal this last one,
29:31 if this fight is close enough,
29:32 this could be the deciding factor for all we know.
29:35 - Renard is staying tall.
29:36 I think what Castro's doing is he's starting at the body
29:39 and then ending the combination back up top.
29:41 It's right there.
29:42 He gave him the feint, like he was going to his body,
29:44 and threw that left over his right hand.
29:47 See, this is where Castro,
29:58 he let his hands go right there in the middle,
30:00 and he gets there.
30:01 - And said you have Renard with a little three-punch combo,
30:04 landed one good right hand during that small flurry.
30:07 - Back with the jab now.
30:09 - And you could change that all.
30:10 That three jab looked good for Renard,
30:13 but Castro could change that with one big left hook.
30:16 Because, you know, yeah, landed three jabs,
30:18 but that left hook, that big right hand,
30:21 it looks like, you know, your head got snapped back.
30:24 - Tough round to call thus far.
30:31 We still have a minute to go.
30:35 - Beautiful straight right by Renard.
30:38 But he got to put it back on combinations.
30:42 - That calm aggression by Jalen Renard,
30:44 as you talked about, Ray.
30:46 - Combination's going to win this fight if you can fight him.
30:50 Got to put them hands together.
30:52 One punch ain't going to do it.
30:54 - Jalen Renard in his quest to clean up his own backyard.
31:04 Trying to get the first one under his belt
31:06 against Josniel Castro,
31:08 who, despite born and raised and living in Boca Raton, Florida,
31:12 is more or less a New England fighter.
31:14 He's fought the bulk of his career up north.
31:17 - He's from New England.
31:18 No matter where he--he can move to the Mars,
31:20 he's from New England.
31:21 - He's a New England fighter.
31:23 Final 20 seconds of this fight.
31:25 See if either guy's got one last flurry in him
31:30 before the bell rings.
31:33 - Castro definitely did what he wanted this round.
31:35 He's going in combinations, making the miss,
31:37 starting from the bar to come back to the top.
31:39 He come off that left hook.
31:41 That right hand found it home all day in this round here.
31:45 - And there's the final bell.
31:47 Very interesting last two rounds.
31:49 Castro's corner feeling good,
31:50 Renard's corner also feeling good.
31:52 You got to wonder how this one's going to go.
31:54 What you really want to see is each round-by-round score
31:57 to see where the fight was in round five,
32:00 round six, round seven.
32:02 And that gives you a good idea of how that fight is won
32:04 for either side.
32:06 Who knows, we could have another draw at the end of the day.
32:08 But a very close fight nonetheless.
32:10 Very interesting to see how these judges had it.
32:13 We saw different perspectives in our first part of the evening
32:15 that ended in a draw, with each fighter getting the victory
32:18 on one of the scorecards before the third judge had it even.
32:22 So, always interesting to see the different perspectives
32:25 and how these fighters have had it scored.
32:27 But a very good entertaining fight, right, for both sides.
32:29 - Yeah, it was.
32:30 I had it even for the first six rounds, 3-3.
32:34 Then after that, I saw that Castro took over in the second--
32:37 the last two rounds.
32:39 He was in better shape.
32:41 I'm not saying Renard wasn't in shape,
32:43 but this Castro was in better shape.
32:45 That closing right eye, I think, changed the whole thing,
32:49 where Renard felt more comfortable--
32:51 I mean, Castro felt more comfortable leading that left hook
32:54 and that right hand over the top.
32:56 - Well, it's worth mentioning, too, that Castro's been--
32:58 he's been more active of the two.
33:00 Renard has had two years off, and certainly that's a factor.
33:03 No matter how many rounds you spar to get in there
33:05 for the first time in more than two years,
33:08 it's a tall order to fight eight rounds
33:10 and to fight him against a very well-established fighter
33:12 like Castro, so perhaps that was a factor.
33:14 And now we'll see on the scorecards
33:16 if Castro finding his second win down the stretch
33:19 is enough to actually win the fight.
33:21 It's gonna be very interesting to see the decision
33:23 and very interesting to see where each fighter goes from here.
33:26 This definitely has rematch potential.
33:28 - Yeah, and you can see by the end of the fight, you know,
33:31 you tell the fighter, "Act like you won.
33:33 Act like you won."
33:35 Is it gonna change anything on the scorecards?
33:38 No, but what it does is--
33:40 what we see is a close fight.
33:42 The crowd sees a close fight.
33:44 When you act like you won and say you didn't win,
33:48 now the crowd tells you, "Yo, you won that fight.
33:50 You think you won."
33:52 And the next time you go out there, even better.
33:54 - Let's find out who actually won this fight.
33:56 We're gonna send it up to our ring announcer,
33:58 Margaret Cresa, for the decision.
34:00 - This is what we do!
34:02 High-octane boxing tonight!
34:04 Let's go!
34:06 [bell ringing]
34:08 [indistinct chatter]
34:11 - Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for these two fighters
34:21 one more time.
34:23 [cheers and applause]
34:26 After eight self rounds of boxing,
34:29 we go to the judges' scorecards.
34:31 Judge Ken Ezzo scores the bout, 77-75.
34:36 Judge Eddie Scunzio scores the bout, 79-73.
34:41 And Judge Martha Tremblay scores the bout, 78-74.
34:45 All for your winner by unanimous decision,
34:49 Jawsnail TG Castro!
34:54 [cheers and applause]
34:56 - There it is. Castro gets the win by unanimous decision.
34:59 Ray, you said it. You had it.
35:01 Five rounds to three.
35:02 One of the cards, I believe, reflected that score.
35:04 We had a little bit of discrepancy, but at the end of the day,
35:07 it appeared that Castro--
