00:34 So you have been both the eighth creative couple in Spain for a few years now,
00:40 but the French people maybe don't know you that well.
00:43 So I was wondering if you could recommend a project to know you better,
00:48 which one would it be?
00:50 Hmm.
00:51 I think they could start with Veneno,
00:55 because it's a very international story,
01:00 although it's very local.
01:02 I think LGBT community and the audience in general,
01:06 they're going to connect with that story.
01:10 And then they can go to La Mesías, which is our last show,
01:15 and it's a big journey and an intense journey.
01:22 [laughter]
01:24 So you're a full 360 artist, or actors, producers, directors, writers,
01:30 blah, blah, blah.
01:31 [laughter]
01:32 So which hat do you prefer,
01:35 and is it everything or nothing for you?
01:39 I'm not an actor anymore, I quit.
01:41 Yes, I was a teenage actor on a show that I actually think it aired in France.
01:49 It was very popular.
01:50 Yeah.
01:51 Yeah?
01:52 It was called Physique Chimie.
01:55 But I'm not an actor anymore.
02:02 I'm a writer, and because I'm a writer, I'm a director,
02:05 because I only write.
02:07 Writing is hell.
02:09 So I write to direct, and I produce to be free.
02:14 So yes, it's all or nothing, which writing, directing, and producing.
02:20 Like, directing something that you didn't write
02:25 should be something very hard, in my opinion.
02:30 To me, our stories are so personal,
02:34 and comes from a very natural and personal place.
02:38 So directing is like a second part of writing,
02:43 and producing is the same.
02:44 It's like the same journey.
02:46 So yeah, I guess it's all or nothing.
02:50 So let's talk about La Messias, which is in the competition this year,
02:55 Panorama International.
02:56 So what is the pitch?
02:57 Can you explain the show to us?
02:59 Wow, it's a complicated pitch, because it's like a very authorship show.
03:04 So it would be...
03:07 I will have to do some spoilers to pitch it,
03:10 but it's this story about a family during decades,
03:16 about trauma that puts the family together and apart.
03:20 And at the end of the day, it's a story, a drama family,
03:26 with some thriller and some sci-fi, some musical and some religion,
03:34 about a family that grew up trapped in a house,
03:39 a part of the world,
03:40 and how they became viral doing a Christian music band.
03:47 Complicated pitch.
03:50 It's probably your most serious project so far.
03:54 So is it like a step up from your previous project,
03:58 as in you did a musical, you did some comedies,
04:00 and now it's, okay, you have some elements of everything,
04:04 but it's serious.
04:06 When you grow up creating and you want to dive into what creation is,
04:15 at least for us, you understand you shouldn't trick the audience.
04:22 You should go in as real as possible,
04:27 without lying and without things
04:32 that make you want to manipulate the viewer.
04:40 So I guess that's what maturity and seriousness means here.
04:45 It's naked of, "Oh, this is dramatic, so I'm going to jolly in,"
04:51 or, "I'm going to play this music."
04:53 No, it's hard, it's raw, and you feel your inside.
05:02 You feel those situations, because this movie,
05:06 this show talks about child abuse,
05:09 talks about traumatic childhood, and talks about fanaticism.
05:15 So those are really serious subjects.
05:20 And we didn't want to, yeah, we wanted to be as distant
05:27 and not manipulating as possible,
05:32 because I think that's how you treat seriously serious subjects.
05:38 I guess that when we were growing as an artist
05:43 and at the beginning of our career,
05:46 our projects said, "Love me," all the time.
05:50 Like, "Love me, like me, see me, watch me, be with me."
05:55 And "La Mesías" is rower, it is what it is.
06:02 Do you like it? Okay, do you not like it? Okay.
06:05 It is very honest in this way.
06:07 It's not pretending to be like, "Oh, like me."
06:12 It's not tricking anyone.
06:13 It's a very raw and complex author drama
06:18 about the complexities of growing up in religious fanaticism.
06:25 But it was very well received in Spain.
06:27 Well, that was surprising, because when you risk as an author,
06:32 you are always afraid.
06:34 You're like, "Okay, people will like it or not."
06:38 And people loved it.
06:41 And I guess that's because audiences nowadays, they know a lot.
06:45 And they are sick and tired of the algorithm.
06:49 I guess audiences, they don't want anymore to be like,
06:52 "Oh, I know when the end of the show is coming.
06:54 I know the plot line.
06:56 I know the McGuffin, the Gunda, whatever."
06:58 It's like, they know everything.
07:00 So they are eager, they are willing to find shows
07:04 that are new and different
07:06 and that comes for a place of truth, I guess.
07:12 Yeah, we need to take the audience seriously,
07:16 because I think if you look at them over the shoulder,
07:23 you always lose.
07:25 I think audience are mature enough and compelling enough
07:32 to see things that are original, different,
07:36 and creating something new.
07:39 I think we have to make the algorithm.
07:42 We shouldn't let the algorithm shape us.
07:47 Yeah, it's like now, there's a lot of ideas about,
07:52 "The pilot should be that way.
07:54 And the second episode, that way.
07:56 And at the 15 minutes, you have to do this and this and this."
08:00 There's a lot of rules that really put us aside of art.
08:04 And art is before the rules.
08:07 And I think that's something we don't have to forget
08:09 when we are writing.
08:10 Like, maybe the pilot could be the way you want to be.
08:16 It's not like a pilot is not supposed to hook people.
08:24 It's supposed to show a part of the story.
08:28 And maybe it's a weird part.
08:29 And maybe it's a new part.
08:31 I don't think we have to write in a specific way.
08:38 I get hooked when I'm surprised.
08:42 When I'm lifted at the story.
08:43 When I'm surprised.
08:43 And when I'm moved.
08:46 And when I see truth.
08:50 So the show stars Macarena Ignacio.
08:55 It's my sister.
08:56 I know, that's what I'm going to say.
08:57 So since she's your sister, did you have her in mind
09:00 when you wrote Irene?
09:01 Yeah.
09:02 Usually we write for specific actors.
09:05 And we wrote this main role for my sister.
09:09 Because she's the best.
09:12 She's one of the best actresses in Spain.
09:14 And she's my sister.
09:15 And the story is about being related.
09:21 It's about siblings.
09:22 It's about how we relate with our own family.
09:25 So it was very, very magic to work with my sister
09:29 in a show about brotherhood.
09:32 So directing my own sister, it was magic.
09:36 And it also healed me in a way.
09:38 Because we could put in the show our own experiences
09:44 and family traumas.
09:46 So religion is very, very anchored in Spain.
09:49 I was wondering, you know, how do you balance being religious
09:53 and being part of the queer community?
09:55 We are not religious.
09:57 Yeah, I don't even have a religious background.
10:01 But I think on one side it's about beliefs.
10:05 On the other hand, it's about manipulation.
10:08 So I write about beliefs because I need--
10:10 now we fight a lot to be alive as a queer community.
10:19 And I feel now I need that spirituality that I don't have.
10:23 So I think when we grow up and we grow old,
10:26 we're going to say, well, what do we believe now?
10:30 How are we going to save ourselves?
10:34 How are we going to face emptiness?
10:38 So I guess I write about spirituality because of that.
10:44 Because I don't have it.
10:45 But I also find interesting how manipulative religion could be.
10:52 I think Monse, the mother, represents that.
10:55 Like, the use of beliefs in order to manipulate and say,
10:59 you are not-- you're not good, you're evil, you shouldn't--
11:05 you don't deserve to be part of the community.
11:09 You don't deserve-- you're not good.
11:12 And also, being trapped-- like, the children, they grew up
11:21 trapped outside of society.
11:23 And it reflects us on being queer.
11:27 Like, when I grew up, I felt trapped in the town.
11:31 I felt--
11:31 It wasn't anything for me because I felt so different from everyone.
11:38 And watching movies and watching shows, it opened a window for me.
11:44 And I could see there was a world bigger.
11:48 And there might be a place for me.
11:51 So yeah, so--
11:52 And about the power of movies to save you.
11:56 What's the process between you two as a couple?
11:59 I mean, when does the work stop?
12:02 Or are you always talking about work?
12:03 We work all the time.
12:06 Or maybe we don't work.
12:10 We live.
12:12 We don't have a personal and a professional life.
12:17 We share life and friends and work and writing and directing
12:21 and producing.
12:21 We do it all the time at the same time together.
12:24 So it's like we are one.
12:27 So we are very used to because we didn't do it separately.
12:33 Never.
12:33 So it's our way to do it.
12:36 It's very natural.
12:37 It's how we would do it.
12:38 It's like we share the stories and we debate ideas.
12:43 And we talk with the actors together.
12:46 So we do it all the time together because we have a deep connection, I guess.
12:51 And that search for spirituality, I think I find it in creation.
12:56 I think that's where I find--
12:58 I kind of find a sense of meaning in life.
13:03 We're watching-- right now we're watching a Spanish show called
13:07 "Nos Vemos en Otra Vida."
13:09 It's good.
13:11 It's about the terrorist attack on Madrid on 11 of March of--
