SI.com takes a look at the winners and losers of the first week of NFL free agency.
Transcript
00:00All right, we're about a week into the 2020 free agency.
00:03Tom Brady's on a new team.
00:05We've seen some trades.
00:06We've seen Ryan Tannehill get BOKU dollars.
00:08But first, I want to talk to the MMQB's Connor Orr,
00:11who wrote a piece about the winners and losers
00:14through the first week of free agency.
00:16Connor, let's get right to it.
00:17Who's the biggest winner in your eyes?
00:20Well, I mean, you mentioned Ryan Tannehill there.
00:22I mean, if you look at the quarterback market
00:24and how it shook out, there's a lot of high upside people.
00:27Jamis Winston is still on the market.
00:29Cam Newton, as of the recording of this video,
00:32hasn't been signed anywhere.
00:34And yet, Ryan Tannehill gets a four-year deal
00:36with guarantees on par with quarterbacks
00:39like Russell Wilson.
00:40He's up in the top 10 now on average per year salary.
00:43So you have to like it if you're Tannehill,
00:46especially when there's a rumor that your team might
00:48have been chasing Tom Brady.
00:49But instead, the minute after the CBA is ratified,
00:52you sign a four-year deal.
00:53And after your career might have ended kind of prematurely
00:56in Miami.
00:57So Ryan Tannehill, definitely one of the big winners there.
01:00Absolutely.
01:00Tannehill goes into 2020 with the seventh highest salary
01:04at the quarterback position.
01:05What a plot twist there.
01:06Now, looking at the other end of this spectrum,
01:08who's the biggest loser throughout the first week
01:10of free agency?
01:11Well, I mean, I had a couple of people there.
01:14I mean, certainly the NFL just optically
01:16for having free agency.
01:17I think that while there are more evils in the world
01:20for people to focus on, the fact that you're
01:23having all these players sign these large deals at a time
01:26when people are dealing with the health
01:28pandemic and the very real financial threat
01:31of a medical crisis like this, I don't
01:33think that the optics there are very kind to the NFL.
01:37And on their side, they're thinking
01:38that they're helping people.
01:39I mean, we saw that quote from Roger Goodell
01:41earlier this week, where he thought
01:44that he was helping get people through the pandemic, which
01:46I think seems a little tone deaf at this point.
01:48But if you're looking for an NFL football-focused loser,
01:51I mean, I don't think it gets any worse than Bill O'Brien
01:54trading away DeAndre Hopkins and getting
01:57less than the Vikings got for Stefan Diggs.
02:00That's going to be a rough one, tough one to live down there.
