Chargers running back Austin Ekeler discusses his 100-100 game against the Jaguars.
Transcript
00:00Was there at some point, was there a time when you know you were getting close to having 200 yards on the field?
00:06Towards the end of the game, Coach Fred, my running backs coach, let me know.
00:10He was like, I'm going to put you back in there so you can get it, you know.
00:13So I was very thankful that he put me back in there so I could actually get both of them.
00:17If you had to choose, do you prefer to catch the ball or to run with it?
00:21I was just trying to get the ball in my hands anyway, you know, especially even getting in the end zone.
00:26You know, it's hard to get those touches, you know, with so many playmakers that we have on the team.
00:30So, you know, we do a good job of spreading the round.
00:32So I mean, anyway, get the ball in my hands is what I prefer.
00:35Phil had just said that you remind him of Danny and what they would do for the team.
00:42That kind of doing your own thing, what does that mean to you?
00:45Ah, you know, it's good to be in the same conversation as those players.
00:50Because they, you know, had a dominant role in this league.
00:55Those guys played a long time, too.
00:57So, you know, hopefully I'm able to also have a long career like those guys are still producing, you know, down the road.
01:03But it's just nice to kind of establish myself in the league and show that, hey, I can consistently make plays.
01:09So that's kind of what this year I feel like has been for me.
01:12I've been building year after year in my role to show people, like, hey, this is a small-town kid, but he's out for it.
01:18He can also make plays. Like, he can play. He belongs.
01:23Have you had a few days to think about the historical achievement that you accomplished?
01:28Yeah, I did. Actually, what I was actually most surprised about was that was Phil's longest reception touchdown.
01:34Or passing touchdown. After playing for 17 years, I was kind of surprised by that one.
01:38You know, 84 yards. I figured he had somewhere in there he had like a 90-yarder.
01:42But he thinks his other one was like another little screen pass to like Sproles or something that took it all the way.
01:46But, yeah, no, it's pretty special. You know, you don't even have to really think about it.
01:50But to get 100-100, you never know. It's just one of those games where, hey, the chips will fall my way, and I was making the play.
01:57So, you know, you never know when you get an opportunity. It comes far in between, obviously.
02:01It's been a while, especially for the Cardinals here, since someone's done that.
02:05How much was that game? How much did you guys need at that game? Kind of like an overall performance?
02:11Shoot, we needed every game. Oh, my goodness. It just seems like we've been so close, you know, week in and week out for the past few weeks.
02:19And so it was finally just a good feeling to have a dominant win where it seemed like all favor of the game.
02:25We were clicking and, you know, moving forward and making our play. So we're just looking to do the same thing this week.
02:31How to carry that, exactly.
02:33Hey, that's what we're trying to do. It's the NFL. So you've got to get back to work and prepare and do it all again.
