00:03 [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
00:04 There's no such thing as a typical day on Shogun,
00:07 as many will attest to.
00:08 My name is Loro Chartrand Del Valle.
00:10 I'm a second unit director and stunt coordinator.
00:13 This has really been a diverse show for action,
00:15 and that's what's making me love it so much.
00:17 We've got everything from a little cut somebody's head off
00:20 and right up to 30 guys fighting in a battle sequence
00:23 or ships in the sea during a storm
00:26 and guys falling overboard.
00:27 And I haven't even started talking about the sword fight
00:30 yet.
00:30 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:34 Lalo was a great coordinator, and I worked with him
00:41 in the last Samurai.
00:43 So it was a nice reunion.
00:46 We called some stunt guys who is a specialist for sword fighting
00:51 and everything Samurai ways.
00:53 And then we had a boot camp.
00:55 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:58 The guys had to learn Samurai movement.
01:01 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:05 We brought experts from Japan to come participate and train
01:09 our actors.
01:09 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:12 Our producer and star, Hiro Sanada,
01:14 took a big part of that, ensuring that it
01:16 passes muster with him.
01:18 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:19 [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
01:28 And the ladies also have to learn a lot of things.
01:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:37 This scene is Mariko when she's 18,
01:39 and she's having a naginata competition.
01:42 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:45 For this particular scene, she has a sparring match
01:48 in front of everybody.
01:51 Anna catches on really well.
01:53 She's really athletic and agile.
01:55 And she's very humble about it.
01:57 She's like, oh, no, I can't do that.
01:59 In 15 minutes, she's got it.
02:00 So I say, yes, you can.
02:02 You can do it really well.
02:03 So we give her plenty to play with.
02:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10 In 109, when Anna or Mariko is trying to leave Osaka Castle,
02:13 we have a huge battle.
02:15 All the sword fights are maximum five moves.
02:19 It's like a quick game of chess.
02:20 Somebody's going to mess up right away.
02:24 And it just comes down to one last guy
02:25 that is doing the best that he can to help her get out.
02:28 And he loses his head.
02:30 So then it's all up to her.
02:32 And basically, she's like, bring the naginata.
02:37 There's no fancy stuff.
02:39 It's not Hollywood.
02:39 It's real.
02:40 It's cut and kill.
02:42 We had an assassination attempt sequence
02:44 where an assassin came into Torunaga's quarters
02:47 and was trying to kill Blackthorn and ended
02:49 up fighting with Torunaga.
02:50 And it was just so much fun, even just rehearsing it,
02:56 because rehearsal is when you test everything, right?
03:01 And we build the room with boxes.
03:03 And we'll do one or two days of just shooting the scene
03:05 with all the action that's involved.
03:07 [YELLING]
03:11 So when we get there to shoot, it's already laid out.
03:13 Got a great horse team.
03:21 I go out to the stables with them and with the actors
03:24 and with the stunt guys.
03:25 And we work with them.
03:26 And we get them tuned into it.
03:28 And it was my first time riding a horse,
03:30 or even maybe being close to a horse,
03:34 that I instantly fell in love with them.
03:38 You know, at first, we practiced on horse riding in Japan
03:42 before I came here.
03:45 But I practiced with Yuki and Anna.
03:49 That is a great, wonderful experience for me.
03:54 It's such a magical thing to be able to work
03:57 with these creatures and build that relationship.
04:01 It's just like working with anyone else,
04:03 like a human being.
04:06 The other one that really stands out
04:08 is when we did the cannon shot.
04:10 So they stuffed chain into these cannons.
04:12 And they shot it and took out a dozen samurai.
04:16 What we did is basically I put them all on ratchets.
04:19 And I picked them in different places.
04:20 And by picking them, I mean I hooked the wire up to them.
04:23 One would be up high on their back.
04:24 One would be on their leg.
04:25 One would be on their hip.
04:27 So that if the chain hit them in the leg,
04:29 we would tie a ribbon around there.
04:30 And then visual effects will take that leg off in post.
04:32 So we had horses crashing and guys flying.
04:35 And they already told me it's looking spectacular.
04:39 The visual stimulation they're going
04:41 to get from this show in every aspect,
04:43 they're going to have a wild ride.
04:44 It's going to be full-on entertainment.
